Life found beneath Antarctic ice sheet 'shouldn't be there'
Biologists say the inadvertent discovery of sea life on a boulder underneath an Antarctic ice shelf and hundreds of kilometres challenges our understanding of how far organisms can live from sunlight.
A British Antarctic Survey team drilled through the 900-metre-thick Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and dropped a camera down the hole in search of mud on the seabed. To their surprise, the camera revealed a boulder ringed by animals. Video footage appear to show 16 sponges, accompanied by 22 unidentified animals which could include barnacles. It is the first time such immobile life has been found beneath an Antarctic ice sheet. “There’s all sorts of reasons they shouldn’t be there,” says Huw Griffiths at the British Antarctic Survey, who analysed the footage.

Antarctica eclipse: Stunning timelapse shows total eclipse bring darkness to Ronne Ice Shelf
The rare spectacle of the moon blocking out the sun reached (left and bottom right) its greatest extent at around 07:33 GMT for spectators (top right) near the edge of Antarctica's Ronne Ice Shelf, which was plunged into darkness for two minutes. The eclipse provided a short respite from the long summer's day that Antarctica has been experiencing since October - in fact, the sun won't be setting there again until April. Solar eclipses only occur roughly every six months, a consequence of how the moon doesn't quite orbit in the same plane around the Earth as the planet does in its path around the sun.

Iceberg as Big as London Breaks Off Ice Shelf in Antarctica
A massive iceberg has broken away in Antarctica. Glaciologists with the British Antarctic Survey say it measures about 600 square miles, the size of Greater London. It broke off from the Brunt Ice Shelf and researchers say they shot this video in 2019, having noticed a crack forming for a few years at that point. They called it Chasm 1 and continued to monitor it, expecting a breakaway event in the future. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
