Yellow Sky
Yellow Sky is a 1948 American western film directed by William A. Wellman. The story is believed to be loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. A band of reprobate outlaws flee after a bank robbery and encounter an old man and his granddaughter in a ghost town.
Plot
In 1867, a gang led by James "Stretch" Dawson (Gregory Peck) robs a bank and flees into the desert. Out of water, the outlaws come upon a ghost town called Yellow Sky and its only residents, a hostile young woman called "Mike" (Anne Baxter) by her prospector grandfather (played by James Barton). Stretch is attracted to Mike. While the men recover from their ordeal, Dude (Richard Widmark) snoops around. Dude tells the others that the old man is mining gold, but Stretch is unimpressed. The next day, Mike and Grandpa take to the hills. A confrontation between Stretch and Dude over the leadership of the gang is interrupted by Mike shooting at them. However, when Grandpa is hit in the leg by a ricochet, Mike surrenders.

As a youngster, William Wellman, Jr went on location with his father as often as possible. His father was the director known as “Wild” Bill Wellman because…he was a hell raiser! Director Wellman’s WINGS won the very first Academy Award for Best Picture and he went on to a career of making films that are now classics like PUBLIC ENEMY, the original A STAR IS BORN, THE OX-BOW INCIDENT, and THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY.
Growing up during the Golden Age of Hollywood, young Bill, Jr., went with his father when he could. He especially liked joining his father for westerns because of the diverse locations and scenery, like Lone Pine, California, during the filming of YELLOW SKY starring Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter, and Richard Widmark. Yep, Bill was there so I thought it would be nice to go back to the spot where it was filmed and have Bill join me in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine to visit the actual location used in 1948 western classic. Where the film was shot, our interview took place. The buildings may be gone, but the rocks and terrain still look the same.
Young Wellman also observed his father shooting ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI with Clark Gable in the Tetons and BUFFALO BILL in Kanab, Utah, with Joel McCrea and Maureen O’Hara.
The youngster also couldn’t help getting into trouble during the filming. Was he “Wild” Bill Jr? What kind of mischief did he create? Bill reveals several big mistakes he made and how his father dealt with him. It was a learning experience, too, because Bill went on to an acting and producing career of over 100 films and TV shows.

Yellow Sky
Yellow Sky is a 1948 American western film directed by William A. Wellman. The story is believed to be loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. A band of reprobate outlaws flee after a bank robbery and encounter an old man and his granddaughter in a ghost town.
Plot
In 1867, a gang led by James "Stretch" Dawson (Gregory Peck) robs a bank and flees into the desert. Out of water, the outlaws come upon a ghost town called Yellow Sky and its only residents, a hostile young woman called "Mike" (Anne Baxter) by her prospector grandfather (played by James Barton). Stretch is attracted to Mike. While the men recover from their ordeal, Dude (Richard Widmark) snoops around. Dude tells the others that the old man is mining gold, but Stretch is unimpressed. The next day, Mike and Grandpa take to the hills. A confrontation between Stretch and Dude over the leadership of the gang is interrupted by Mike shooting at them. However, when Grandpa is hit in the leg by a ricochet, Mike surrenders.
