KKSS PART 1 1969
KL raw, truthful re-telling of B Hines' gritty story of a boy's alienation and brutal school life in 1960s Yorkshire KL transformed B Hines's gritty novel 'A Kstrel for a Knve' into a moving, searingly brutal and truthful film. Billy Casper (Bradley) is an awkward teenager, stuck in a drab Yorkshire mining town. Home life is miserable and school almost as bad. A glimmer of hope is offered when Billy finds a baby kestrel, which soon becomes the focus of his life. The relationship is all-consuming for Billy and within it he finds a vocation, something about which he can at last be passionate and articulate. At the centre of Loch's film is a remarkable, utterly unaffected performance from Bradley, who was at the time of filming himself a Barnsley schoolboy with no acting experience. He projects a sense of brutalized sensitivity that is given maring expression in his painfully tender nurturing of the kestrel. Loch's cinematic style is already fully formed here, with the film's naturalistic, semi-improvisatory feel, a profoundly humanist attitude, and a pervading sense of doom leavened by flashes of wit, principally the wonderful football sequence in which PE teacher Glover fulfils his Bobby Charlton fantasy.

Black Jack (Trailer) - Out Now on BFI DVD
Based on the novel by celebrated children's author Leon Garfield, this children's adventure film set in 1750s York was Ken Loach's fourth feature. Shot on location by cinematographer Chris Menges, who had collaborated with Loach on developing the gentle, observational style also seen in his earlier feature 'Kes' (1969), the film's witty dialogue and enchanting performances from its charismatic young cast led to the film being presented with the Critics Award at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. Kes Soundtrack - John Cameron. (Billy sees Kes in the Tower)
British composer and arranger John Cameron produced a haunting and beautiful score for this 1969 Ken Loach adaptation of the barry hines book 'a kestrel for a knave'. David Bradley in a rare big screen outing gave a magnificent performance as the bullied and neglected schoolboy Billy Caspar who finds solace from his difficult home and school life in the shape of a young kestrel he chances upon, and subsequently adopts and trains. Well known british character actor the late Brian Glover, screenwriter Colin Welland, Freddie Fletcher and the late Lynn Perrie provide an excellent supporting cast. Considered a classic british movie Kes was placed 7th in the British film Institute's list of top 10 British movies.
