The purpose of this practical experience was to apply transpersonal principles to a contemporary world. As a student, I was given the challenge to undertake a hands-on project with a social, political, ecological, wellness or transformational focus. Our projects may help us prepare for our dissertation research, and ideally prepare us for future professional work. My objective was to use visual & new media to assist me in the ancient healing practice of story-telling, in particular the story of living with recurrent episodes of profound sadness, the focus of my doctoral dissertation. Working with a documentary film maker, I answered, re-answered, and expanded upon my research and interview questions over a period of about 3 months. This practicum was set up as a series of conversations based on incubation questions from my dissertation research proposal. Portions of these semi-structured interviews are interlaced with a visual narrative that provides insight into how one person (this researcher) has constructed a workable response to recurrent, deep, episodes of profound melancholy. Questions included: What are some of the messages from any of the cultures you belong to (ethnic, spiritual, racial, economic, etc.) about living with the ideas and behaviors we associate with mental illness? Can you talk about the connection between your faith and your sadness? What experiences have you had with mental health care and medication? How has your experience of depression changed since your initial diagnosis/realization of the presence of profound sadness? Is there a prayer, song, poem, ritual, artifact, myth or story that has significance in your journey with depression that you would be willing to teach or share with me? Can you talk about what it is like when you emerge from an episode of profound sadness? As a researcher, the act of going through my own questions and attempting to answer them was a transformative experience in and of itself. The act of editing the footage provided a way for me to consider my own story from new perspectives. Combining it with some of my favorite music, artifacts from my life, and my original artwork was invaluable in creating a wiser narrative for my journey. It certainly has prepared me for the next step in my work, which is ask these same questions of other women. Aside from that personal benefit, it is my hope it may be helpful to anyone wanting to know more about considering mental illness in spiritual terms. My research method, organic inquiry, emphasizes the healing power of telling, listening, and honoring stories. By creating and sharing this visual narrative with others, I am an active participant in my own healing; using digital media to share this story, my prayer is seeds of understanding and healing can be planted in others.
