Robert Mitchum Talks About Marilyn Monroe
Mitchum discusses Monroe When I first met Marilyn she was Norma Jean Baker, Norma Jean Dougherty as a matter of fact at that time. And I was working at Lockheed. Jim Dougherty was my partner and he had a picture of his bride. And she was very shy, very pleasant, very sweet. But uh, she was uh, not too comfortable around people because I suppose her background hadn't prepared her for sort of uh, easy sociality. She was convinced that she was not terribly pretty or sexy. Really, you know. And as a matter of fact she did not, she didn't have an aura of sexiness about her. The drama coach Natasha Lytess came into her life because I'm sure that Marilyn thought there was some magic in Natasha. She felt she needed someone to support her, to tell her what she was doing right when she did do something right. She felt that this whole lark of being a sex goddess or glamor queen was just that. She would uh, play it if that's what they wanted and as a matter of fact she "burlesqued" it really because she thought the whole thing was very, very funny. In River of No Return Marilyn was cast opposite an old friend, Robert Mitchum. At that time, I didn't think she knew too many people who were very friendly to her. Growing up in an atmosphere of agents, directors, and journalists, she seemed uh like a lost child. The whole thing to her, I mean her position in this atmosphere was uh like Alice in Wonderland. The whole thing was through the looking glass and she could not believe that anyone ...

Robert Mitchum sings The Ballad of Thunder Road
A video I cut together with car chase scenes from the 1958 Robert Mitchum movie, Thunder Road. The background music track is a theme song for the movie, written and sung by Robert Mitchum (though his version wasn't used in the movie). The movie had a lot of influence for a B-rate feature. It was the inspiration for Bruce Springsteen's song "Thunder Road" (though the song and the movie have nothing much to do with each other; The Boss saw a poster for the movie and liked the name); some aspects of the design of the car led to the design of the Batmobile later on the TV series; the movie could be considered a prequel to the Steve Earle song "Copperhead Road"; and it was an influence in the creation of "The Dukes of Hazzard" TV series (but don't hold that against it).

THUNDER ROAD , ROBERT MITCHUM , 250 GALLONS CLEAN AND HIGH PROOF !!!
BALLAD OF THUNDER ROAD Let me tell the story, I can tell it all About the mountain boy who ran illegal alcohol His daddy made the whiskey, son, he drove the load When his engine roared, they called the highway Thunder Road. Sometimes into Ashville, sometimes Memphis town The revenoors chased him but they couldn't run him down Each time they thought they had him, his engine would explode He'd go by like they were standin' still on Thunder Road. (CHORUS) And there was thunder, thunder over Thunder Road Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his load There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the Devil's thirst The law they swore they'd get him, but the Devil got him first. On the first of April, nineteen fifty-four A Federal man sent word he'd better make his run no more He said two hundred agents were coverin' the state Whichever road he tried to take, they'd get him sure as fate. Son, his Daddy told him, make this run your last The tank is filled with hundred-proof, you're all tuned up and gassed Now, don't take any chances, if you can't get through I'd rather have you back again than all that mountain dew. (CHORUS) Roarin' out of Harlan, revvin' up his mill He shot the gap at Cumberland, and screamed by Maynordsville With T-men on his taillights, roadblocks up ahead The mountain boy took roads that even Angels feared to tred. Blazing right through Knoxville, out on Kingston Pike, Then right outside of Bearden, they made the fatal strike. He left the road at 90 ...
