Sustainable Fishing
More than 2.6 billion people rely on the ocean's fish as their number one source of protein. Oceans are one of the critical issues on the agenda at the upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. Overfishing is the largest threat to to fisheries globally. Half the world's fish stocks are fully exploited, a quarter are considered depleted or over-exploited, and only one remaining quarter considered fish sustainable. Sustainable fishery practices have been adopted by local fishermen in the Gulf of Mannar in South India, in partnership with the local government and UNDP. Since implementing these new and sustainable ways of fishing, coral reef in the region has recovered, and an annual two and a half month ban on fishing now ensures that local fish stocks will regenerate year after year.

Rameswaram island history #1
shatheeshl.blogspot.com http Rameswaram'(Tamil:ராமேஸ்வரம்) is a town in Ramanathapuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on an island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is less than 40 kilometers from the Jaffna Peninsula, Sri Lanka. Together with Kashi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus. Hence, it is a bustling pilgrim centre. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. According to legends, this is the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge Ram Setu(also known as Adam's Bridge) across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita, from her abductor, Ravana. This is also the place where Rama worshipped Shiva to be absolved of the sin of killing Ravana, hence the name of Shiva, which became the name of the town - Rameswara ("lord of Rama"). Both the Vaishnavites and Shaivites visit this pilgrimage centre which is known as the Varanasi of the south. Ex-president of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam, hails from a fishing hamlet called Dhanushkodi situated on the island

Marvin & Ruth around the world on a Catamaran.
We are both Americans though Ruth was born in the UK. Have been sailing on 'Two can Tango' reached Kochi from Malaysia, that took 11 days approx 15oo miles, will sail next to Sallalah which is another 1500 miles to Oman then to thru the dangerous Aden, then to the red sea, from there to Turkey, The sail in the gulf of Mannar, that is between the southern most tip of India and Sri Lanka was very very rough, Winds were up to 35 knots and we were unable to manoeuvre using the steering stations for about two days hence we could use just the Auto pilot. The Auto Pilot can handle the boat better than humans so when I am on the watch I just want to notice around to make sure that we don't run into other vessels. Its very important to keep watch in the night as if any thing has to be done its very difficult to do things alone as if you are swept away then you are gone as the boat will just keep going, it will not stop for you. We were sailing across the Atlantic, we experienced a Meteor shower that lasted several nights. It was just spectacular to watch fireworks in the sky. sailing thru the Panama is also a wonderful experience as there is so much of history behind it. We are looking forward to sail thru the Suez this time. This is a French built Catamaran hence this boat will not sink. We get the entire electricity via the 8 solar panels which is really great. I am terribly not happy with the big vessels dumping their ballast here in the port, In places elsewhere the port ...

Drinking Water - A Pit At A Time
www.righttowater.info en.wikipedia.org www.hindu.com "Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and, therefore, a basic human right. Contaminated water jeopardizes both the physical and social health of all people. It is an affront to human dignity." -Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General. Dhanushkodi lies on one of the southernmost extremities of India, which was ravaged by a cyclonic storm in December 1964. Since then the region was forgotten by the administration, in spite of the fact that it once was a bustling town, connecting Sri Lanka, to India, by a ferry across the Palk Strait. This is a recording from one of the fishing hamlets in the region, where daily existence is a constant struggle. People here dig open pits in the sandy coastline and draw fresh water for drinking. The settlements do not have any sanitation and drainage system. One can imagine what the quality of water would be, under these conditions.

SAVE OUR PLANET - Mining to blame for islands to sink beneath waves
SAVE OUR PLANET... Experts report that the recent sinking of the two small islets of Poomarichan and Villanguchalli in the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka, in an area known for its diverse flora and fauna, is the result of illegal coral reef mining as well as rising sea levels caused by global warming.

Ghost Town Dhanuskodi India Road Trip - Rameshwaram [HD]
Trip Report: vivekananddisciple.blogspot.in Road trip of 8kms towards the tip of India in the Gulf of Mannar, Dhanushkodi. This place has confluence of two seas- Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. A full fledged town was destroyed in 1964 cyclone, since then its been declared as Ghost Town. A very serene, mystic, religious, pristine and beautiful place. A must visit. 1964 Cyclone: On that night (December 22) at 23.55 hours while entering Dhanushkodi railway station, the train No.653, Pamban-Dhanushkodi Passenger, a daily regular service which left Pamban with 110 passengers and 5 railway staff, was only few hundred yards before Dhanushkodi Railway station when it was hit by a massive tidal wave. The whole train was washed away killing all 115 on board. All together over 1800 people died in the cyclonic storm. All dwelling houses and other structures in Dhanushkodi were marooned in the storm . The high tidal waves moved deep onto this island and ruined the entire town. In terms of wind velocity which touched 150 knots (277km per hour) at Vavunia in Northern Sri Lanka on the evening of 22 Dec 1964[5] , the Rameshwaram cyclone is regarded as one of Asia's fiercest cyclone of 20th century. Dhanushkodi or Danushkodi (Tamil: தனுஷ்கோடி) is a town/village at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India. Dhanushkodi is situated in the South-East of Pamban. Danushkodi is about 18 miles (29 km) West of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka ...
