Howrah Rajdhani Overtakes Sealdah Duronto at Asansol
Some rather unexpected action from Eastern Railways. Our 12260 New Delhi Sealdah Duronto Express stopped at Asansol for an unscheduled halt of five minutes, and subsequently creaked out of the station at snail's pace. We stopped just after clearing the station. After remaining stationary even after 10 minutes, we were informed of a minor fire in the brakeband of our Ghaziabad WAP7. The fire was minor and folks tended to it with hand-held fire extinguishers. In the midst of this, there was a shrill honk from behind and listening to my sixth sense, I rushed to the door and sneaked in between two curious onlookers. Approaching us steadily was a fresh Ghaziabad WAP7, screeching loudly and yelling at people to move away from the tracks. Accompanying it was the familiar sound of multiple generators whirring away. The weekly 12306 Howrah Rajdhani via Patna coolly slid past us through the fourth line, and proceeded on its merry way towards Howrah. The staffs of both the trains, as seen in the video, were thoroughly enjoying this very rare overtake!

Early morning departure from Howrah Junction, aka India's biggest station, with WAP-7 Black Diamond
Date taken: July 2012 Camera used: SONY Camcorder DCR SX45E After getting the go ahead signal, freshly POH'ed 30204 WAP- 7 of GMO shed (now transferred to HWH) departs from pl- 8 of Howrah station bang on time with the 13317 Howrah (HWH)- Dhanbad (DHN) BLACK DIAMOND Express. And while doing so, we cross a SER EMU, a light 16231R WDM- 3A of KGP shed, and a 36109 WDS- 6R of HWH shed shunting the 13051 Howrah (HWH)- Siuri (SURI) HOOL Express with a trailing 17636 WDM- 2 of HWH shed. Finally as we change tracks to enter the HB Main line, we meet a 18784 WDM- 3A of HWH shed and a KGP WDM- 3A shunting the rake of 12703 Howrah (HWH)- Secunderabad (SC) FALAKNUMA Superfast Express. Finally we also get a glimpse of the coaching yard. As a matter of fact, Howrah is the only station in India to be the Headquarter of 2 Divisions, namely ER and SER. And is also the only station in India to have cab road facility. The cab roads are situated in between platforms 8 and 9, and 21 and 22. It allows travellers to park their cars right in front of their respective coaches. And with 23 platforms, it is also India's biggest station. 13317 maintains a fantastic run in between Howrah and Burdwan (via HB Main line), where it covers 107 kms in 1h 41m at an average speed of 63 km/hr with 2 halts enroute. But from Burdwan to Dhanbad, it covers 164 kms in 3h 11m at an average speed of 51 km/hr with 11 halts enroute. Giving me company on the trip were railfans Wrik, PK Venkatramani and BG (Pen-name ...

A Complete Journey on the Howrah Rajdhani Express Part IV: Jharkhand Blast!
Some high speed passage through Jharkhand courtesy a terrific show of speed from the Howrah Rajdhani Express! The Koderma-Dhanbad section cuts through the state of Jharkhand and the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The Chhota Nagpur Plateau forms a rugged terrain, dotted with small hills, and criss-crossed by fast-flowing rivers. The highest point in Jharkhand, the Parasnath Hills can be visible between Parasnath and Gomoh, towering over the landscape, its peak often shrouded by clouds. The entire section is replete with sharp curves and bereft of any major speed restrictions, barring around the station of Gomoh. The Ghaziabad WAP7 powered 12302 Howrah Rajdhani Express absolutely blasts through the Chhota Nagpur Plateau in this compilation. Featured are the magnificent sal forests around Hazaribagh Road; a sharp skip of Hazaribagh Road at 110 kmph; the entry and exit into Parasnath; and a panoramic view of the Parasnath range at a rate of 130 kmph. I attempted to estimate in a one-off case the time taken for the Rajdhani to halt at Parasnath. In my estimation, the time lost is around 7 minutes. The highlight of the compilation is the entry and exit into the Parasnath. The exit records a dramatic display of acceleration by the Ghaziabad WAP7 with a 20 coach load as it surges to 130 kmph within 3 minutes and 30 seconds of departing from Parasnath.

Full Journey on the Howrah Rajdhani Express: Dhanbad-Howrah High Speed Action
The concluding three hours of a wonderful journey aboard the 12302 Howrah Rajdhani Express. We leave Dhanbad 3 hours and 10 minutes behind schedule and charge towards Howrah at full tilt, through the eastern fringes of Jharkhand and central West Bengal. At Kumardhubi, we meet the legendary 13317 Howrah Dhanbad Black Diamond Express, with a Howrah WAP7 and subsequently, thunder over the Barakar River and Barakar at 130 kmph as we make our entry into Bengal. We cross Asansol at a sedate pace, courtesy a 15 kmph speed restriction. A fleeting glimpse of 'Jagjivan Ram', India's first WAM1 is obtained at the Asansol electric locomotive shed while the 12304 Howrah New Delhi Poorva Express with a Howrah WAP4 bears out its commercial halt at Asansol, with local vendors making brisk business by the unreserved coaches. The progress from Asansol to Waria (taking over 30 minutes) is excruciatingly slow with a number of slowdowns and caution orders. In particular, there is a moderate halt outside Raniganj, where we meet the 12385 Howrah Dhanbad Double Decker Express, led by a subdued Gomoh WAP7. All hell breaks loose post Waria however as we blaze through the Waria-Bardhaman section at terrifying speeds. Durgapur is torn apart at 130 kmph and the 64 kilometres between Durgapur and Bardhaman covered in a mere 31 minutes, at an average speed of 124 kmph. The LED display inside the coach never showed less than 125 kmph in this period and hit 132 kmph on a couple of occasions. We slow down ...

Howrah Rajdhani Express; Full Journey Compilation; Part I, Mughal Sarai
A full journey compilation from the 12302 Howrah Rajdhani Express; aka ER King. The journey was undertaken in June 2012, in the huge summer rush. The journey was undertaken at a day's notice and I purchased a W/L 16 ticket on First AC which eventually got confirmed. The 12305 Howrah Rajdhani Express was delayed by over 5 hours, leading our train to be delayed by 2 hours and we finally left Delhi at 1915. After a sumptuous dinner, the morning found us at Mughal Sarai. This video documents the Rajdhani's arrival and departure from Mughal Sarai, starring a short parallel departure with the WAG7 hauled Mughal Sarai Buxar Passenger and some swift acceleration through the Mughal Sarai yard; Asia's largest freight yard. Parts II, III, IV and V are to follow, bringing you some high speed action through the Grand Chord, the Gurpa-Gujhandi Ghat section and the Chhota Nagpur Plateau.

Howrah Rajdhani Express: Full Journey Compilation Part III, Gurpa-Gujhandi Ghats
Part III of the full journey compilation aboard the Howrah Rajdhani: a full profile of the 32 km Gurpa-Gujhandi ghat section. The ghat section is located between Koderma and Gaya on the Asansol-Dhanbad Grand Chord where the tracks cut right through the Chhota Nagpur Hill ranges with trains ascending to over 1200 feet (387 m is Koderma's elevation) in this stretch. The tracks twist and turn through the densely forested hills which form the border between the states of Jharkhand and Bihar, creating for a spectacular sight, even during summer when the forests aren't as green as the monsoon. This compilation captures the Rajdhani's progress through two of the largest curves and all three tunnels in the section, documenting the deceleration to 30 kmph at the beginning of the first tunnel. The first two tunnels are actually built over an S-curve, with the train curving right and subsequently, left. The compilation ends with a full coverage of the high speed exit from the Gurpa-Gujhandi ghats. From the beginning of the first tunnel to around Dilwa, there is a strict speed restriction of about 30 kmph in this stretch. Dilwa to Gujhandi is 75 kmph, after which, the speed restriction is lifted. At Gujhandi, we meet with a Mughal Sarai WAM4 in charge of the Dhanbad-Gaya Intercity Express. The Ghaziabad WAP7 with the Rajdhani accelerates dramatically after crossing Gujhandi and races through the forests forming the base of the Chhota Nagpur Hills at a blistering pace, almost doubling ...

Puri Howrah Duronto Express: A Complete Journey Compilation
A complete journey compilation on board the 12278 Puri Howrah Duronto Express. The compilation prominently stars high speed crossings of the gigantic Mahanadi and Brahmani rivers in Odisha, furious skips of Soro and Bhadrak, some brisk action near the eastern ghats around Jajpur, Odisha, and some chaotic train movements near Khurda Road (and quite a bit more!). A Santragachhi WAP4 was in charge of our train and thrilled us regularly with some aggressive acceleration and sustained high speed runs. The journey was undertaken at the beginning of the monsoons so the rivers were sufficiently filled with water and the landscape was hued in multiple shades of green, allowing for the Duronto to blend perfectly with the surroundings!

Parallel Departure from Howrah with Mumbai Duronto: Asansol WAM4 with Howrah Jaisalmer Superfast
Howrah serves as a terminal point for both the Eastern and South Eastern Railways with a separate terminal devoted to each division. The trains do not share any tracks for their entry/exit into/from Howrah, providing the opportunity for parallel arrivals and departures. The 12262 Howrah Mumbai Duronto Express for instance shares its departure with the 12381 Howrah New Delhi Poorva Express and the newly inaugurated 12371 Howrah Jaisalmer Superfast Express. In this video, the Howrah Jaisalmer Express creaks out of platform 10 of Howrah with a sparkling Asansol WAM4. As we cut through various points to join the mainline, the Howrah Mumbai Duronto with a Howrah WAP4 takes its own curves towards Santragachhi. There was a local train adjacent to our Jaisalmer Express, forcing me to capture the parallel action from a rather unique angle, thanks to the sweeping curves and the quicker progress of the Duronto.

Crossing the Gigantic Godavari River at Rajahmundry: Howrah Trichy Superfast with Itarsi WAM4
One of the most spectacular river bridges designed by the Indian Railways can be found to the south of the town of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. The teeming Godavari river, nearly 3 km wide at this point, is crossed via two independent bridges. There is a third bridge which was built in the late 19th century but is now decommissioned. Our train, the 12663 Howrah Tiruchirapalli Express crosses the river through the rail-cum-road bridge. The train curves beautifully into the bridge and also embarks on a huge curve on its way out, giving a full view of the length of the train, and the lovely red Itarsi WAM4 in charge of it. Courtesy being near the Godavari delta and on the last legs of 1400+ km journey from the western ghats in Maharashtra, the river itself is replete with water, an year round feature not restricted only to the months of monsoon, making it seem like a sea on occasions.

Arriving at Igatpuri - Howrah-Mumbai Duronto (Aug. 11, 2011)
An impressive 33-minute run from Nasik Road brought us into Igatpuri. We were greeted by a WAM4-hauled train which, I concluded from the SLR board, was traveling to Howrah. Could this have been the rescheduled Mumbai-Howrah Mail via Allahabad? Note that the rescheduled Mumbai-Howrah Mail via Nagpur was already standing at the station with a WAP4 in charge. The latter half of the video shows this train departing towards Nasik Rd.
