British Council presents Speed Famelab 2007
When science meets fame Saturday, 9 June, the nine winners of FameLab in Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Romania, Serbia and Turkey put the charisma back into chemistry, made biology accessible and excited the audience with artificial intelligence at the original FameLab UK finals. Quentin Cooper, the evening host and the finals presenter, also spoke very highly of them, as indeed all who saw their 10 minutes blitz-performance or speed-FameLab as they called it. They demonstrated that they can present a science-bite in 1 minute in a foreign language and not be intimidated by quite a large audience. FameLab is an initiative of the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK and this was the first year the contest went international in nine countries in South-East Europe through the British Council network under the umbrella of Beautiful Science regional project. find out more about this project by visiting the British Council's websites in the above countries or at www.beautifulscience.org.uk

Barbets and other birds chirping!
Birds of Dehra dun and Chakrata: Lupine flowers, Green-backed Tit, Yellow-browed leaf Warbler, Himalayan Whistling Thrush, Himalayan Barbet and Brahminy Ducks or Ruddy Sheldrake (Surkhab) on Asan Barrage, Dehra dun, Uttarakhand, India. According to Wikipedia: "The Ruddy Shelduck, Tadorna ferruginea, is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae. In India it is known as the Brahminy Duck. There are very small resident populations of this species in north west Africa and Ethiopia, but the main breeding area of this species is from south east Europe across central Asia to southeast China. These birds are mostly migratory, wintering in southern Asia. Although becoming quite rare in southeast Europe and southern Spain, the Ruddy Shelduck is still common across much of its Asian range. It may be this population which gives rise to vagrants as far west as Iceland, Great Britain and Ireland. However, since the European population is declining, it is likely that most occurrences in western Europe in recent decades are escapes or feral birds. Although this bird is observed in the wild from time to time in eastern North America, no evidence of a genuine vagrant has been found." Thisfootage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of imagery from South Asia. The Wilderness Films India collection comprises of thousands of hours of high quality ...

Thessaloniki - Greece
Ferries to Greece: ferriesgreece.org Thessaloniki, Thessalonica, or Salonica is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of Macedonia. Its honorific title is Συμпρωτεύουσα (Symprotévousa), literally "co-capital", a reference to its historical status as the Συμβασιλεύουσα (Symvasilévousa) or "co-reigning" city of the Byzantine Empire, alongside Constantinople. According to the 2001 census, the municipality of Thessaloniki had a population of 363987, its Urban Area 800764 and the Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) of Thessaloniki has an estimated 995766 residents (2004). Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe; its commercial port is also of great importance for Greece and its southeast European hinterland. The city hosts an annual International Trade Fair, the International Thessaloniki Film Festival, and the largest bi-annual meeting of the Greek diaspora. Thessaloniki is home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments, including the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessalonika, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as several Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures. Europe
Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe is a concept dating back to classical antiquity which are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10180000 square kilometres (3930000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at ...

euronews science - Where is Europe's oldest town?
www.euronews.com Bulgarian archaeologists led by Professor Vasil Nikolov from the National Archaeology Institute and Museum claim to have discovered Europe's oldest town in the north-east of the country. Professor Vasil Nikolov, who has been studying the area for many years, located the town near the salt pans in the vicinity of Provadia in the Varna region, the same locale as the first salt factory in Europe. Salt production is believed to be the reason behind the location of the town, founded around 6500 years ago. Before the discovery, archaeologists had already demonstrated the existence of the first European salt mines in a region with a rich past proven by the number of graves. What is different here from all the other ancient villages in South-East Europe are the salt springs. The salt water was evaporated by different techniques in ceramic bowls and the salt produced was used as money because it was so essential for humans and animals as well. The production of the salt made the region prosperous. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Archaeologists Discover Europe's Oldest Town
Archaeologists in Bulgaria claim they have discovered Europe's oldest town in the north-east of the country. Full Story: Bulgarian archaeologists led by Professor Doctor Vasil Nikolov, from the National Archaeology Institute and Museum, claim to have discovered one of the oldest towns in Europe, in north-east Bulgaria. Dr. Nikolov, who has been studying the area for many years, located the town near the salt pans in the vicinity of Provadia in the Varna Region, the same locale as the first salt factory in Europe. [Dr. Vasil Nikolov, National Archaeology Institute and Museum]: "We can now say that the Provadia salt pans are in the oldest town in Europe, existing between 4700 to 4200 BC, in the second half of the fifth millennium before Christ." Dr. Nikolov says, it was the salt—equivalent in value to today's oil—which led to the town being established. [Dr. Vasil Nikolov, National Archaeology Institute and Museum]: "What makes this ancient village different from all the others in South-East Europe is the salt springs; the salt body is nine meters below us. The salt water was likely evaporated by different techniques in ceramic bowls and the salt produced may have been used as money, because salt was important for humans and animals as well. So salt production made this village different from others, giving it prosperity." Further hints of a rich society were found in skeletal remains showing remnants of copper hair accessories. TURKEY - Turkish Delight
Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), known officially as the Republic of Turkey (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti , is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia and Thrace (Rumelia) in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey borders eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west, Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhichevan), and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea and Archipelago are to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Separating Anatolia and Thrace are the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish Straits (the Bosporus and the Dardanelles), which are commonly reckoned to delineate the border between Asia and Europe, thereby making Turkey transcontinental. Due to its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition. A powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong historic, cultural and economic influence in the area between the European Union in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance. Turkey is classified as a newly industrialized country by economists and political scientists worldwide and is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic whose political system was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa ...
