Sweet Salone - home sweet home (Sierra Leone)
Sweet Salone - home sweet home (Sierra Leone)
Sierra Leone is divided into four administrative regions: the Northern Province, Eastern Province, Southern Province and the Western Area; which are subdivided into fourteen districts. Each district has its own directly elected local government known as district council, headed by a council chairman, in whom local executive authority is vested. The population of Sierra Leone comprises about sixteen ethnic groups, each with its own language and custom. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende. The Temne are predominantly found in the north of the country; while the Mende are predominant in the south-east. Currently, Sierra Leone enjoys political stability and economic growth and she is one of the most religious tolerant nations in the world.- published: 22 Dec 2013

Everyday Hero: Betty Knight
Nearing her 50th birthday, Betty Knight recalls "thinking about how I could take my passion for lifelong education and learning and combine it with the celebration of a half century of life." A teacher herself, education is extremely important to Mrs. Knight. "I went to hear Stephen Lewis speak about the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals. It was after that when I realized that it was all well and good for me to write a cheque, but I said to myself 'I actually need to do something,'" Knight explains. In what she calls her "Popeye moment," Lewis inspired her to contact CAUSE Canada, a small NGO that works on community development, education, and health projects in developing nations, to coordinate a plan of action. A teacher herself, funding an elementary school build in Sierra Leone was decidedly a good fit. A short time later, Knight had raised over $40,000 to build a school in the Koinadugu Region of Northern Province in Sierra Leone, West Africa. After completing the first school-building project, Betty has continued to lend her support to the area, funding the rehabilitation of another school and a program to provide breakfast and lunch at the two schools. She has since raised visited the area three times with her husband, Jamie, to conduct workshops for teachers.- published: 06 Dec 2013

INTERVIEW WITH MAADA BIO
INTERVIEW WITH MAADA BIO
Maada Bio understands the ideals of community, faith and service because they've defined his life. From his heroic service to Liberia to his years as lieutenant, through the Sierra Leone civil war, he has devoted himself to this country. Again and again, we've seen him make tough choices when easier ones were available. His values and his record affirm what is best in us. In the story of Cain and Abel, the biblical story of Adam and Eve's children, Cain slew his brother in a fit of jealousy. When he came home and the Lord asked him, "Where is your brother?" Cain answered that he didn't know. "Am I my brother's keeper?" Yes, you are your brother's keeper! Your brother is also your keeper. If everyone were to be each other's keeper, no one would be unsafe or uncared for. Each person would have someone looking out for him or her no matter who they are or what is happening around them. It would be utopia. Maada Bio believes in the constitutional freedoms that have made our party the envy of our country, and no SLPP member will ever sacrifice our basic liberties nor use tribe or region as a wedge to divide us. We all believe in the SLPP ideals. And we all know that it's not enough for just some of us to prosper. For alongside our famous individualism, there's another ingredient in the Sierra Leone saga, a belief that we are all connected as one people. If there's a child on the northern province who can't read or go to school, that matters to Maada Bio, even if it's not his family. If there's a family somewhere who can't pay for their hospital treatment and having to choose between medicine and food, that makes Maada Bio's life poorer, even if it's not his family. If there's an SLPP family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process that threatens Maada Bio's civil liberties too. It is that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper -- that makes our party work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single SLPP family: "E pluribus unum," out of many, one.- published: 08 Dec 2013
