National Intelligence Estimates
National Intelligence Estimates (NIE) are the nation's most informed reports on national security issues, but in the wake of miscalculations on Iraq, NIEs have come under increasing scrutiny and skepticism, most recently the December 2007 NIE on Iran. To assess the validity of such concerns, Dr. Thomas Fingar will dissect exactly how these estimates are compiled and key judgments formed.

US intelligence since 9/11 and Wikileaks
Amy Zegart is a recognised voice on intelligence reform in the US. In 1999 she wrote Flawed By Design, a book examining the weaknesses in America's national security agencies. Her award winning 2007 work Spying Blind: The CIA, the FBI and the Origins of 9/11 was the culmination of five years of research. In this interview Zegart notes that while there have been some improvements since 9/11, reform of the US intelligence community is stalling in important areas. Zegart also discusses the recent Wikileaks controversy and says that the news from it is not all bad for America's national security system. ussc.edu.au

Your Intelligence at Work: Mueller & Clapper Silent on Stealth Jihad
This week in Washington, top officials charged with counter-terrorism duties attended an event hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center. Members of the Center for Security Policy's TEAM B II were there to ask them specific questions. Watch them dance around and obfuscate in response to questions by Diana West, Frank Gaffney and Christine Brim. These men-- including Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and FBI Director Robert Mueller-- are America's most senior officers in counter-terrorism, and they spend more time and mental energy defending a politically correct vision of the world than defending actual Americans. Does this convey confidence in your national security team?

WikiLeaks' Global Intelligence Files Release
WikiLeaks has acquired and begun publishing 5 million internal emails between employees of Stratfor, a global intelligence corporation based in Texas. The files were allegedly given to WikiLeaks by the hacktivist group Anonymous after they were stolen from Stratfor in December and show conversations between the company's employees - from the CEO to lower-level analysts - and those who used Stratfor's services. Stratfor makes its money by charging thousands of dollars a year for access to its private intelligence service, a service many powerful corporations use to gain an upper hand over competitors by obtaining information about places or governments they are doing business with, or to keep tabs on activists in their way. The US marines are even a Stratfor client as are numerous foreign governments and officials. WikiLeaks has set its sights on Stratfor because it represents the most corrupt and threatening aspects of the out of control national security state--that former US intelligence officials run a company specializing in monetizing supposedly secret intelligence that only they have access to--thanks to their ties with current high-level members of governments around the world. The emails WikiLeaks has released in the first day of publication alone prove that Stratfor gains a significant amount of its intelligence from bribes paid to sources. This revelation should be enough to pressure the Department of Justice into opening an investigation into the relationships ...

CIA Archives: Counter-Intelligence Surveys, Security Clearances: Big Request of the Commander (1953)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Counter-intelligence or counterintelligence (CI) refers to efforts made by intelligence organizations to prevent hostile or enemy intelligence organizations from successfully gathering and collecting intelligence against them. National intelligence programs, and, by extension, the overall defenses of nations, are vulnerable to attack. It is the role of intelligence cycle security to protect the process embodied in the intelligence cycle, and that which it defends. A number of disciplines go into protecting the intelligence cycle. One of the challenges is there is a wide range of potential threats, so threat assessment, if complete, is a complex task. Military organizations have their own counterintelligence forces, capable of conducting protective operations both at home and when deployed abroad. Depending on the country, there can be various mixtures of civilian and military in foreign operations. For example, while offensive counterintelligence is a mission of the US CIA's National Clandestine Service, defensive counterintelligence is a mission of the US Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), Department of State, who work on protective security for personnel and information processed abroad at US Embassies and Consulates. There is much value in taking a broad look at CI. A few examples of national CI and CT structure are used examples here; see the separate article on Counterintelligence and Counterterror Organizations. Thoughtful ...

Peace and Justice - Combating Terror with Intelligence - Michael Sheehan
Counterterrorist expert and author Michael A. Sheehan spoke onTuesday, Oct. 5, in the Mitchell Auditorium on The College of St. Scholastica campus. The title of his discussion is "Combating Terror with Intelligence." Sheehan's lecture is the first in a new series called Terrorism and Human Rights, sponsored by the Alworth Center for the Study of Peace and Justice at St. Scholastica. The series will explore several sides to the issue of terrorism as terrorist actions and threats increase all over the world. Sheehan is the former New York City Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism. From 1998 to 2001, he was the coordinator for counterterrorism at the US Department of State. In a 2001 interview with "Frontline," he called the Sept. 11 attacks a failure of intelligence and said that the scale of the attack was completely unexpected. Sheehan is a West Point-educated Green Beret. During his time in the military, he served as an officer in the infantry and Special Forces. He had several overseas assignments as a commander of a counter-terrorism unit in Panama, a counterinsurgency advisor in El Salvador, and an infantry company commander in Korea. He also served on peacekeeping duty in Somalia and Haiti. While on active duty, Sheehan served in the White House on the National Security Council staff for Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton. His recent book "Crush the Cell" is critical of America's approach to defending against terrorist threats at home and offers a ...
