EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Kyrgyzstan's president
Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Kyrgyzstan's president, talks exclusively to Al Jazeera from Osh after fleeing violent clashes between anti-government protesters and riot police in the capital Bishkek. Opposition leaders in Kyrgyzstan said on Thursday that they had seized power after taking control of security headquarters, state television and other government buildings following two days of unrest. At least 75 people were killed on Wednesday and more than 1000 were injured in clashes between the police and protesters. The violence followed rising tensions between the opposition and Bakiyev's government, which they accuse of cracking down on independent media and fostering corruption.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev is ousted and flees Kyrgyzstan
It is the 16th of April 2010, and violence is on the streets of Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek. Kurmanbek Bakiyev has been president since 2005 when he took over amidst similarly turbulent scenes in the country's 'Tulip Revolution', one of the 'coloured revolutions' that swept across the former Soviet Union. His predecessor, Askar Akayev, was removed by a population angered by corruption and poverty. Bakiyev promised to change all that. By all accounts, he was just as bad. When huge and angry crowds took to the streets to protest (rising gas prices was perhaps the final straw) on the 7th of April Bakiyev's troops opened fire, killing 80. Enraged Kyrgyz crowds storm the parliament building with rocks and fire bombs. Bakiyev flees and an interim government takes over. Kyrgyzstan tries once again to establish a true democracy in a region full of despots.

Bakiyev calls for protest probe
Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the ousted president of Kyrgyzstan, says he is ready to bear full responsibility for the events of the country's April 7 uprising if an independent commission finds him at fault. Bakiyev, who fled the capital, Bishkek, on Wednesday after violent anti-government protests, said he is inviting an international commission to investigate the clashes, in which 81 people were killed. But he told Al Jazeera that he is also calling on the United Nations to send a peacekeeping force to Kyrgyzstan, to stop what he called "criminal elements" from growing in the country.

Bakiyev leaves, but much unresolved in Kyrgyzstan
Although Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has fled the country, too much about the situation in Bishkek remains unknown to declare a victory for the opposition, says analyst Erica Marat of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute. She says that Bikayev was concerned only about strengthening his own regime and his control over the economy. He underestimated the power of the crowds, which showed how out of touch he was with the Kyrgyz people. Egor Piskunov also reports live from Bishkek.

The Interim Country - Kyrgyzstan
Watch more: www.youtube.com Despite being hailed as a model of post-Soviet reconstruction, Kyrgyzstan made international headlines in 2010 after the toppling of authoritarian President Bakiyev plunged this once peaceful country into chaos. Just five years ago, Kyrgyzstan's Tulip Revolution was praised as a peaceful readjustment of a post-Soviet state. But the revolution was soon betrayed and Kyrgyzstan descended into authoritarianism under president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. This film chronicles the popular revolt that led to the toppling of Bakiyev in April 2010 and the chaos and interethnic violence that ensued. Since 2010 the lack of power and legitimacy of the interim government has prevented the country from stabilising. As tensions continue to rise and the economy deteriorates, journalists like Gulzat Egemberdieva ask if the dream of becoming the "Switzerland of Central Asia" will ever be realised.

Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker, reporting from Bishkek, said Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the country's president, has now fled the capital and relocated to the country's south.

Ousted Kyrgyztan president Kurmanbek Bakiyev charged with mass killing
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan The ousted president of Kyrgyzstan has been charged with organizing mass killings in the deadly uprising that forced him from office in this Central Asian country earlier this month, the leader of the interim authorities said Tuesday. Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who is in exile in Belarus, will have his presidential immunity stripped to face the Kyrgyz charges, which also include abuse of power, said Azimbek Beknazarov, a vice-premier of the opposition forces that claimed provisional control of the country. Bakiyev fled the capital on April 7 after security forces fired on protesters and the demonstrators stormed government buildings. At least 85 people died in the violence. He tried to rally support in his home region in Kyrgyzstan's south, but eventually fled the country and surfaced last week in Belarus. Beknazarov said Belarus is obliged to extradite Bakiyev under an agreement among former Soviet countries. There was no immediate reaction from Belarus, whose authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, has criticized the demonstrations that drove out Bakiyev. Bakiyev insists he is still Kyrgyzstan's legitimate president, but has vowed not to return to the country as its leader. Stability in Kyrgyzstan is a significant concern for the United States and Russia, both of which have air bases in the country. The US air base is a key piece of the NATO military campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan; it provides refueling flights for warplanes over ...
