Afghan refugees at risk in cold winter

More than two million Afghans are at risk from cold and malnutrition this winter. The worst off are those who have fled violence and poverty and are living in temporary camps across the country. Last year thirty refugees, mainly children, froze to death in makeshift camps scattered around Kabul. The UN has appealed for help but has only managed to raise less than half of the $448m it asked for. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from Kabul, Afghanistan.

Iran seeks Afghan refugees' repatriation

The United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR along with Iran's Bureau for Immigrant Affairs affiliated to Iran's interior ministry are exploring ways of helping refugees in Iran. There are currently over 800-thousand Afghan and over 45-thousand refugees living in Iran. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Gutierrez met with Iran's Interior Minister, Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar in Tehran to discuss why these refugees are reluctant to go back home. Iran's Interior Minister explained his country's dedication in assisting refugees. Officials say Iran has had a positive and innovative approach to protect refugees entering the country, providing them access to health insurance and most importantly education. Currently around 230-thousand Afghan refugees are attending schools in Iran. Mr. Gutierrez further discussed the UNHCR's future role in helping refugees in Iran. Mohammad-Najjar also said that the UN along with the international community have to assist in rebuilding Afghanistan into a safe environment and a country that could provide adequate health care and education, so that these refugees enjoy a safe place to call home to return to. Iran closes Herat consulate: Afghans protest over refugee deaths and mistreatment in Iran

Iran has shut its consulate in the western Afghan city of Herat after anti-Iranian protests erupted outside the compound in response to the deaths of a number of Afghan refugees and migrants in Iran. Tehran has adopted a hard line policy with its multimillion population of Afghan refugees since the Kabul government signed a long-term cooperation deal with America which will allow Washington to maintain a strong presence in the region after NATO troops withdraw in 2014.
