Special Report - Goa: A Lost Paradise
In our Special Report series this week, we take you to the land of sun, sand, sea & beaches. After tourism, the biggest economic driver of the state is iron ore mining. Rampant mining of iron ore, especially between the years 2000 and 2008, has devastated the state's environment and ecological hotspots. Groundwater in the aquifers and wells has completely dried up while paddy cultivation has been majorly impacted. Lives of people around the mining areas is no better. Most of the people are still suffering from the fallout of air and noise pollution. The Supreme Court banned the iron ore mining in Goa in October 2012. But the flip side of the story is that lakhs and lakhs of people associated with the mining sector are now jobless. Barge owners, truckers, and many others have nowhere to go. For them life has come to a standstill because they have no other option. A six member panel is going to submit its report by February 2014 and all eyes now will be on how the government would try to strike a balance between the economic and the environmental needs. In the backdrop of frequent disruptions in Parliament, Vice President M Hamid Ansari today said he was "deeply distressed" at the "derailment" of the functioning of legislative bodies which had become venues of agitation, a view shared by many parliamentarians. INOX theater in Goa during International Film Festival India
INOX theater in Goa during International Film Festival India
Goa is India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population. Located in West India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast. Goa is India's richest state with a GDP per capita two and a half times that of the country as a whole. It was ranked the best placed state by the Eleventh Finance Commission for its infrastructure and ranked on top for the best quality of life in India by the National Commission on Population based on the 12 Indicators. Panaji is the state's capital, while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. The historic city of Margao still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the early 16th century as merchants and conquered it soon thereafter. Goa is a former Portuguese province; the Portuguese overseas territory of Portuguese India existed for about 450 years until it was annexed by India in 1961. Renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture, Goa is visited by large numbers of international and domestic tourists each year. It also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its location on the Western Ghats range, which is classified as a biodiversity hotspot. The International Film Festival of India (IFFI), founded in 1952, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia. Held annually in the beach state of Goa, on the western coast of the country, the festival aims at providing a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of the film art; contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos; and promoting friendship and cooperation among people of the world. The festival is conducted jointly by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the government of Goa. The 43rd edition of IFFI was held in Panaji, Goa, from 20 November to 30 November 2012, and was inaugurated by Akshay Kumar. The 44th Edition of IFFI would be held at Panjim Goa from November 20, 2013 with Susan Sarandon as the Chief Guest.
