News : Tanzania withdraws proposal on ivory trade
The Tanzanian government has withdrawn its proposal seeking trade in ivory and its products. The proposal was likely to cause friction between Kenyan and Tanzania during the convention of international trade in endangered species slated for march next year in Bangok, Thailand. Kenya has submitted a proposal for a total ban on ivory trade while Tanzania was pushing for a new trading window to allow it to sell its ivory stockpile to fund conservation measures. Patrick Amimo reports on the ivory trade about-turn that has been welcomed by wildlife conservationists Watch KTN Streaming LIVE from Kenya 24/7 on www.ktnkenya.tv

Petition to Save Africas Elephants Ban Thai Ivory Trade
Every day in the savannas and forests of Africa, elephants are being gunned down for their ivory tusks. Across the continent, tens of thousands of these majestic animals are being slaughtered each year. In many places the species has already been poached to extinction. If we don't act now there may be no wild elephants left. Elephant poaching is being driven by demand for ivory carvings and trinkets in Asia where many consumers think "elephant teeth" simply fall out and re-grow without hurting the animal. The truth is that ivory comes from dead elephants. In Thailand, elephants are revered as sacred. There is a saying that there would be no Thailand without the elephant. But Thailand is also the biggest unregulated market for ivory in the world. Although it is against the law to sell ivory from African elephants in Thailand, ivory from domestic Thai elephants can be sold legally. As a result, massive quantities of illegal African ivory are being laundered through Thai shops. To save Africa's elephants it is essential that Thailand closes this legal loophole. Join us in asking Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to ban all ivory trade in Thailand. Representatives from 176 governments will be meeting in Bangkok March 3-14 to discuss global wildlife trade issues, including the elephant poaching crisis. While the eyes of the world are turned to Thailand, we want to present 1 million signatures to Mrs Sinawatra. Sign the petition and tell the Thai Prime Minister to ban ...

Thailand's flourishing ivory trade
It is estimated that 38000 elephants are slaughtered for their tusks each year in Africa. And much of it is smuggled into Thailand - a renowned hub for ivory smuggling. Most of the ivory crafted there eventually ends up in the US and Europe. As elephants are a national symbol in the country, Thailand does allow the sale of ivory - but only under strict wildlife protection laws. Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from Nakhon Sawan, the ivory capital of Thailand - where about half the tusks sold are illegal. [March 13, 2010]

WHITE GOLD Trailer - a Kenyan perspective on elephant poaching and the ivory trade
AEFF is currently working a new film entitled 'White Gold' (the name given to ivory by Chinese traders). This is the promotional trailer we are using to help raise money for the production and dissemination costs of this film. As with all AEFF productions, this film is non-commercial and will be used for educational and awareness-raising purposes only. The film, currently in production, is being made from Kenya's perspective and will be a powerful voice supporting Kenya's opposition to the re-opening of a legal international ivory trade. The film investigates the current status of African elephants, today's unprecedented poaching levels, and the international ivory trade. Working in cooperation with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), eminent scientists and conservationists across Kenya and internationally, the film follows the ivory trail from source to consumer, covering issues never before seen on film and examining the security and economic implications of the illegal ivory trade - and the potential future impact should international ivory trading be legalized by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As a conservation education tool, the film has three key objectives: (i) when screened in multiple languages at CITES 2013, to encourage the international delegates to vote in support of Kenya's opposition to re-opening the ivory trade -- the result of this vote by the 175 member nations of CITES is critical to the survival of the African ...

Illegal Ivory Trade in Thailand
Thailand has been a hub for the illegal ivory trade of elephants. While some ivory goes into items sold in large cities such as Bangkok much is sent on to other countries including China and Vietnam. Edwin Wiek, the founder and secretary general of Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, discusses this age-long issue explaining the current situation, where the ivory is coming from, and what is being done to combat the illegal trade. www.thailawforum.com http

Growing demand for ivory in China drives elephants at the brink of extinction.
Growing demand of ivory in China, drives elephants at the brink of extinction! China is one of the largest consumers of wildlife products and an IFAW study found that 70 percent of Chinese consumers did not know that elephants were killed for ivory. Some thought elephants may lose tusks like people lose teeth. Also in western countries, far too many people are still not aware that elephants are being killed for their ivory and thus for the products made of it. Please educate your friends, your family, your neighbors and colleagues about ivory and ask them to never buy any souvenir made from ivory! Thank you! Help Save Elephants: EXTRA Host Maria Menounos & Kristin Davis for Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
SIGN THE PETITION TO STOP THE AFRICAN IVORY TRADE: WWW.IWORRY.ORG If current trends continue, there could be no wild elephants left in Africa as soon as 2025! For the first time ever, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has launched a campaign to petition against the ivory trade. Here EXTRA Host Maria Menounos and Actress Kristin Davis show their support for the campaign and urge you to join. Many people think the ivory trade was a problem of the past, but the truth is that if the current trends in rising incidences of ivory poaching continue at the same level, the entire population of African Elephants could be wiped out by 2025. Within 13 years, elephants could be extinct. That is a frightening thought. Data shows 2011 as the worst year on record for the illegal killing of elephants since 2002. During 2011, authorities seized more than 23 tons of ivory, which represented about 2500 individual elephants killed. Elephant numbers in Africa have fallen from 1.3million in 1970s to around 400000 today. In the Tsavo ecosystem, where the DSWT operates, there were estimated to be 45000 elephants in 1970, but only 12572 elephants remain in this ecosystem today. The campaign launched six months ahead of the next meeting of CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) which will take place in Bangkok in March 2013. The aim is to raise awareness of the escalating problem of ivory poaching and to encourage individuals to add their voice in ...
