Hemoglobin/ Red Blood Cell Recycling Animation
This is another video that I did for extra credit, sorry did not have much time to do it, so I apologize for the quality of it. I also apologize for any errors in the video. I will be adding also the narration because it may help people. I hope this helps you.
-When an RBC has lived about 120 days, it gets caught in the reticular tissue of the spleen. The RBCs rupture and the released hemoglobin is ingested by macrophages.
-The broken chains of Hemoglobin are broken down to individual amino acids that are metabolized or used to build new proteins.Iron is released from the heme of the hemoglobin, Iron is then transported by transferrin into the blood, to various tissues for storage, or to red bone marrow for making new hemoglobin.
-The heme group without the iron is converted to biliverdin, which is then converted to bilirubin. Bilirubin is then transported into the liver by albumin, where it is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder as bile. It will then be secreted into the duodenum of the small intestine.
-As it passes through the large intestine, bacteria will convert bilirubin into bilirubin derivatives, such as urobilin and stercobilin. Stercobilin contributes to the color of feces. Urobilin is absorbed into the blood and excreted thruogh the kidneys into the urine, urobilin is responsible for the yellow color in urine.

This inherited red blood cell disorder is the most common genetic disease in America, and one of the most painful and debilitating. Until now, bone marrow and cord blood transplants have been the only treatment available to patients, and matched donors are hard to find. But an experiment at Genetix in Cambridge, Massachusetts is raising hopes. Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)
The erythrocytes, or red blood cells ("corpuscles"), contain hemoglobin (substance that is able to bind with oxygen). Oxygen from the lungs is carried by the erythrocytes to all the tissues of the body. A person who has anemia, a condition caused by too few erythrocytes in the blood, may experience weakness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)
There are five different types of leukocytes, or white blood cells, within the body, including the following:
* Neutrophils
* Basophils
* Eosinophils
* Monocytes
* Lymphocytes
These cells fight viral, bacterial, and other infections and participate in the hypersensitivity responses seen in allergic reactions.
Neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils are granulocytes (white blood cells that destroy bacteria). Granulocytes are distinguished by the small particles, or granules, that reside within each cell and contain substances to fight infections. Granulocytes undergo many stages of development before becoming mature neutrophils, basophils, or eosinophils. The more immature, myeloid series of granulocytes include cells known as myeloblasts, promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, band forms ("stab cells"), and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs).
