Climate change is simple: David Roberts at TEDxTheEvergreenStateCollege
David Roberts is staff writer at Grist.org. In "Climate Change is Simple" he describes the causes and effects of climate change in blunt, plain terms. On April 16, 2012, speakers and attendees gathered at TEDxTheEvergreenStateCollege: Hello Climate Change to reflect on the ability -- and responsibility -- of formal and informal education to inspire and empower action in this era of climate change. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

45th Soldiers surprise families' at OKC Thunder Game
BY JOHN ROHDE, Staff Writer, jrohde@opubco.com Two families of Oklahoma National Guardsmen deployed to Afghanistan were surprised at halftime when the soldiers walked onto to the court during a ceremony. Two families of Oklahoma National Guardsmen deployed to Afghanistan were surprised at halftime when the soldiers walked onto the court during a ceremony honoring families who support loved ones serving in the military. The Thunder provided limousine service to the families of Sgt. Robert Nixon and Staff Sgt. Jose Dozal of the 45th Infantry, transporting them from Midwest City, Oklahoma City and Ardmore. The families were asked to attend and represent the thousands of families who support the men and women of the military, particularly the National Guard. More than 3000 Oklahoma National Guard troops are deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait. The families watched holiday video greetings from their guardsmen, who later walked out to surprise their families. They watched the second half from one of the Thunder's Terrace Suites, and each guardsman was given a personalized Thunder jersey with No. 45. The Colcord Hotel provided rooms on Christmas Eve for each family and to spend Christmas night following the game.

Please note: This video was intended for a CQ Roll Call internal meeting and not for marketing purposes. Any appearance or affiliation in this video is not endorsement of CQ Roll Call or any of its products. CQ Roll Call employees knew something was up when video producer Andrew Satter asked them to read lines from various hit songs such as "I'm Just A Girl" and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay". What they didn't know was that the lines would be cut up into short bites to form the lyrics to the iconic Schoolhouse Rocks song, "I'm Just A Bill." No song better reflects the company's core mission of tracking, analyzing and interpreting the legislative process. The video was shown during a recent corporate meeting. Authors@Google: Lawrence Wright
Wright, a Pulitzer Prize-winning staff writer for The New Yorker, brings exhaustive research and delightful prose to one of the best books yet on the history of terrorism, The Looming Tower. He begins with the observation that, despite an impressive record of terror and assassination, post--WWII, Islamic militants failed to establish theocracies in any Arab country. Many helped Afghanistan resist the Russian invasion of 1979 before their unemployed warriors stepped up efforts at home. Al-Qaeda, formed in Afghanistan in 1988 and led by Osama bin Laden, pursued a different agenda, blaming America for Islam's problems. Less wealthy than believed, bin Laden's talents lay in organization and PR, Wright asserts. Ten years later, bin Laden blew up US embassies in Africa and the destroyer Cole, opening the floodgates of money and recruits. Wright's step-by-step description of these attacks reveals that planning terror is a sloppy business, leaving a trail of clues that, in the case of 9/11, raised many suspicions among individuals in the FBI, CIA and NSA. Wright shows that 9/11 could have been prevented if those agencies had worked together. As a fugitive, bin Ladin's days as a terror mastermind may be past, but his success has spawned swarms of imitators. This is an important, gripping and profoundly disheartening book. This event took place September 14, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Detroit City Council hearing adjourned amid shouting match
By Suzette Hackney • Detroit Free Press Staff Writer A Detroit City Council special investigative session into a police whistle-blower lawsuit settlement erupted into a yelling match when President Pro Tem Monica Conyers made claims that she was being disrespected. The argument began when Conyers asked an independent attorney who was testifying if the council could be sued by Detroit residents for approving the $8.4-million lawsuit settlement. Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said: "They can sue you; I voted no." Conyers told Watson to stop interrupting and disrespecting her. She added: "We all know how you voted; you don't have to keep repeating it." Moments later, Conyers interrupted Council President Ken Cockrel as he was questioning Carl Edwards, the Detroit attorney. Cockrel reminded Conyers that he had the floor and banged his gavel repeatedly. Conyers railed: "You're not my Daddy. You're not going to disrespect me. Grow up! Control your house and learn how to treat women." Cockrel told Conyers that she was "one to talk." Conyers also made repeated mocking reference to Cockrel as Shrek, the green, grumpy and rotund ogre from the animated film. As the council members yelled at each other, residents attending the hearings yelled, as well. "You're disrespecting the citizens!" and "This is a shame!" Cockrel took a quick recess to regain order before then breaking for lunch.

How Political Myths Spread - Farhad Manjoo
Complete video at: fora.tv Salon.com technology columnist Farhad Manjoo examines the phenomenon of "selective exposure" - our predisposition to seek out ideas that re-enforce existing beliefs - in today's media, using the 2004 Presidential election's "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" as an example. ----- Salon.com staff writer Farhad Manjoo talks about his new book, True Enough: Learning To Live in a Post-Fact Society, which contends the Internet promotes belief over fact. Perhaps countering this view is Mike Godwin, formerly counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and now general counsel for the Wikimedia Foundation, and Zo (Connie) Spencer, brilliant, witty, and fearless blogger (www.humorlessbitch.com) on all things political, personal, and involving high-tech. As usual, everyone is invited to participate in the discussion - The Hillside Club Cybersalon Farhad Manjoo is an author and a staff writer for Salon.com. Manjoo graduated from Cornell University in 2000. While there, he wrote for and then served as editor-in-chief of the Cornell Daily Sun student newspaper. Before taking a staff position at Salon.com, he wrote for Wired News. Manjoo frequently writes on new media, politics and controversies in journalism. Manjoo is the author of the book True Enough: Learning to Live in a Post-Fact Society, published in March, 2008.

Tired of seeing his visions rewritten, Whedon eventually returned to television, bringing with him an adaptation of his first feature film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
