Battle of Talas The Battle of Talas, Battle of Talas River, or Battle of Artlakh (Chinese: 怛羅斯會戰; Arabic: معركة نهر طلاس) was a military engagement between the Arab Abbasid Caliphate along with their ally the Tibetan Empire against the Chinese Tang Dynasty, governed at the time by Emperor Xuanzong. =======Image-Copyright-Info======== License: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0) LicenseLink: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0 Author-Info: Cplakidas Image Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Transoxiana_8th_century.svg =======Image-Copyright-Info======== -Video is targeted to blind users Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA image source in video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnefUSeb3Gk
This is a school project I did on an actual battle. During the Tang Dynasty in China, the Chinese were defending the Syr Darya river from the Abbasid Caliphate (who built Baghdad). Their armies met at the Talas River. The Chinese had 10,000 troops and an additional 20,000 Karluk mercenaries to match the Caliphate's astounding 200,000 troops. Halfway through the battle, the Karluk mercenaries turned on the Chinese and slaughter them. Amazingly, 2000 Chinese suurvuve and make it back to the Chinese capitol, but there have been rebellions in their absence and they find a weakened nation. Eventually, barbarians outside and rebellions within ended the Tang Dynasty.
Talas River The Talas River rises in the Talas Province of Kyrgyzstan and flows west into Kazakhstan. =======Image-Copyright-Info======= Image is in public domain Author-Info: Thermokarst Image Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:TALAS_RIVER.JPG =======Image-Copyright-Info======== -Video is targeted to blind users Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA image source in video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzhfptwVLQQ
At the Battle of Bach Dang River in 938 A.D the Vietnamese forces, led by Ngo Quyen, defeated the invading forces of the Southern Han state of China and put an end to centuries of Chinese imperial domination in Vietnam. It took place at the Bach Dang River, near Halong Bay in northern Vietnam. In 937, Liu Yan (Chinese: 劉龑; Vietnamese: Lưu Nham), the Southern Han ruler, took the chance to intervene in Vietnam again after the death of the Annam Lord Protector Duong Dinh Nghe. He had been foiled by Duong Dinh Nghe in 931, but now that Duong Dinh Nghe was dead, he thought the time was ripe for another attempt. He placed his own son, Liu Hongcao (Chinese: 劉弘操; Vietnamese: Lưu Hoằng Tháo), in command of the expedition, naming him "Peaceful Sea Military Governor" and "King of Giao." He hastily a...
*** Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the Battle of Talas, a significant encounter between Arab and Chinese forces which took place in central Asia in 751 AD. It brought together two mighty empires, the Abbasid Caliphate and the Tang Dynasty, and although not well known today the battle had profound consequences for the future of both civilisations. The Arabs won the confrontation, but the battle marks the point where the Islamic Empire halted its march eastwards, and the Chinese stopped their expansion to the west. It was also a point of cultural exchange: some historians believe that it was also the moment when the technology of paper manufacture found its way from China to the Western world. *** GUESTS: Hilde de Weerdt Michael Höckelmann Hugh Kennedy

Tsunami The term tsunami, meaning "harbor wave" in literal translation, comes from the Japanese 津波, composed of the two kanji 津 (tsu) meaning "harbour" and 波 (nami), meaning "wave". (For the plural, one can either follow ordinary English practice and add an s, or use an invariable plural as in the Japanese.[7]) There are only a few other languages that have an equivalent native word. In Acehnese language, the words are ië beuna[8] or alôn buluëk[9] (depending on the dialect). In Tamil language, it is aazhi peralai. On Simeulue island, off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, in Devayan language the word is smong, while in Sigulai language it is emong.[10] In Singkil (in Aceh province) and surrounding, the people use the word gloro/galoro for tsunami.[11][12] In Nias language, it i...
