Swimming Men's 400m Freestyle Final - Gold for Sun (CHN) - London 2012 Olympic Games Highlights
Swimming Men's 400m Freestyle Final - China Korea United States Highlights from the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games. -- 28 July 2012 First ever gold medal for China in swimming Gold medal - SUN Yang Silver Medal - PARK Taehwan Bronze medal - VANDERKAAY Peter Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904. In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition. Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1500 metres for men. China's Sun Yang Seeks Multiple Golds in London
China's rising swimming star Sun Yang is getting-in his final practice laps at the team's UK base at the University of Bath. The 20-year-old has spent the last four years building toward a star-making role at these Olympic Games. He shook up the swimming establishment with two gold medals and a new world record at the 2011 FINA world championships. Four years ago, the then-16 year-old Sun appeared at the Beijing Games and finished eighth in the 1500 freestyle. But since then, his rise seems unstoppable. He took two gold medals and two silvers at the 2010 Asian Games, and went on to surprise the experts by taking 4 medals at last year's FINA World Championships. In the 1500 freestyle, Sun broke the mark set by Australian legend Grant Hackett. It was the longest-held world record in swimming. Sun is at the top of his game, and only has one real rival for the gold this summer. Liu Haitao, coach of Chinese National Swimming Team, said, "Nobody has come close to beating Sun, especially in freestyle. The biggest threat may be Park Tae-Hwan from South Korea." Park won the 400m freestyle gold in Beijing, and could upset Sun in the shorter-distance race. But when asked if anybody could come close to Sun's 1500 meter record, China's chief technical researcher gave a hint of the team's confidence. Lu Yifan, Chief Technical Researcher of Chinese National Swimming Team, said, "It is very difficult for me to see that. It is just a guess. We hope he can break the record. Maybe he could ...

Sun Yang -- 孙杨-- The Freestyle Mechanics
孙杨: In general, 孙杨exhibits the "half-catchup" style of stroke that has become more common in the last decade or so. This half-catchup style is also referred to as 'front quadrant" swimming. As for his kick, Yang demonstrates a variety of kick frequencies, alternating between a 2,4 and 6-beat kick during recent races, although he seems to settle into a 4-beat as the dominant rhythm through much off the middle of his races. Yang also demonstrates a pronounced "signature kick" during his stroke cycle, whereby a single kick in a cluster of kicks during a single arm pull is considerably larger than the others. He will occasionally do a "double-breath" that is, breathing on two consecutive arm pulls, although he primarily demonstrates right-side breathing. One of the more profound aspect of his swimming stroke is the extremely high position of his elbow at the end of his catch (aka "Early Vertical Forearm"). Another striking and beautiful aspects of his swimming is that Sun, like distance great Keiren Perkins, employs a wide mixture of kick rhythms. In one swim, you can witness Yang doing a 2, 4 and 6 beat kick. One of the more subtle aspects of his form is the occurence, timing, and striucture of his "signature kicks", that is, kicks within a cycle that stand out as being larger (in amplitude) and presumably more powerful than the other kicks in his cycle. Me vs Sun Yang
Comparison of my freestyle swimming style against the front crawl style of Sun Yang (recorded while he swam world record on 1500m, 14:34.14). To synchronize the both tracks, I adjusted the Sun track with speed factor 0.91, means he moves faster. The funny thing behind: I always tried to swim the style Gant Hackett did, combined with seeing what worked out the best for me/my body/my training. Until I watched this 1500m final, I didn't even know who Sun Yang was. I was totally amazed to hear that Sun Yang works together with the same trainer as Grant Hackett did.

Project Description:
Every year in early September, as graduate students at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles put the finishing touches on their thesis projects, a Sci-Arc faculty member and students prepare a temporary pavilion for the annual graduation ceremony. This year, faculty members Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu of Oyler Wu Collaborative, along with their students, designed a pavilion entitled Netscape for the event that stretches across the northern end of the SCI-Arc parking lot, providing seating for 900. Consisting of 45,000 linear feet of knitted rope, 6000 linear feet of tube steel, and 3000 square feet of fabric shade louvers, the pavilion creates a sail-like canopy of rope and fabric that floats above the audience. With its fabric louvers tilted toward the western sky, the canopy is designed to provide shade for the specific date and time.
Netscape utilizes a double layer of netting in varying configurations to create a three-dimensional field of billowing shade louvers. Based on a conventional knitting technique, like that used in the making of a sweater, the pavilion exploits the malleability of this technique as it stretches to conform to the three-dimensional shape of the structure. Unlike a conventional net, the knitting technique is not fixed at its intersections, allowing the shape of the nets (and their grids) to contort both at the upper and the lower surface. With the nets contorting differently, the shade louvers that are stretched between them become a dynamic field of fabric, twisting and bending in order to span across the space in between.
Design of the project involved an elaborate back and forth between digital and analog systems of investigation. With engineering done by Nous Engineering, analysis of the tension in the nets provided constant feedback that informed the shape and three-dimensionality of the structure, as well as some basic form-finding for the nets. As the project progressed, however, large three-dimensional models provided a means of studying the behavior of the grids and their resulting geometries.
With the shade louvers designed to block the setting sun in the west, the view from inside the pavilion offers a dramatically different experience. The three-dimensionality of the double-layered netting reaches depths of about 10’, and becomes open and porous when facing eastward into the complex three-dimensional field of fabric and rope.

Screenplay is conceived of as a ‘play’ on one’s visual perception. This twenty-one foot long screen wall is constructed of forty-five thousand linear feet of rope strung through a series of lightweight steel frames. The wall is designed with the intention of provoking a sense of curiosity by slowly revealing its form and complexity through physical and visual engagement with the work. The wall is made from a repetitious steel framework with rope infill that varies over the length of the wall in three dimensions, forming a thickened undulating screen made up of dense line-work. In its orthographic, or ‘straight on’ view, the wall forms a meticulously organized series of patterns easily recognized by the viewer. As the viewer moves around the wall, its three-dimensional qualities reveal a more complex system of deep sectional cavities, twisting surfaces, and material densities. The experience is meant to build on an ‘on again/off again’ system of pattern legibility, using optical effects as a means of provoking engagement in the work.
Screenplay was designed for Dwell on Design 2012.

Hello everybody !!!
... the practice of a BIG Bear and of a little tiger ... reminds me a bit of Baloo and Mowgli practicing together in Walt Disney's Jungle Book.
Actually the BIG Bear also wrote a little story for the little tiger. It goes like this :
The Three Little Friends and Father Bear
by Christoph Eberhard
A little tiger in the forest.
A lot of friends around him.
An old bear teaching him to rest …
Within him, will it reveal the best ??
Once upon a time there was a little tiger. He lived in a big forest in India and had many many friends. He especially liked a little bear and his neighbour, the rabbit. They went to school together and they always liked to play together on their way back home. They would climb on the trees and play hide and seek … The little rabbit was very good in playing hide and seek. When he was hiding nobody could ever find him … but when it came to find the others nobody was faster than him. The bear was a specialist in climbing trees … probably because he liked honey so much and always tried to steel some from the bees. The little tiger … it may seem strange … enjoyed dancing most. When the three friends were playing hide and seek he would do his “disappearance dance” – he would start to dance around until he would find a nice place where to hide. If he had to seek the others, he would then do his “seeking dance”. He always sung a song along with it : “Hide, hide, hide in the trees or near the lake. Hide, hide, hide, in the loan or near the river. Hide, hide, hide, on this side or on the other side. Hide, hide, hide, but the little tiger’s eyes and ears are open wide. Hide, hide, hide but the little tigers nose is always right.” And even if it usually took him a little longer to find his friends than the little rabbit – against whom nobody could compete as we already said, and if he never found the little rabbit – as nobody could ever find him when he hid – he always found them in the end. And the other animals of the forest liked the little tiger a lot because they enjoyed his joyful singing and dancing.
There was just one little thing with the little tiger … well, it was a little tiger !!! So sometimes when it was dancing along with its friends it would give them a little strike with its paws … or it would run towards them from behind and in order to surprise them make a big leap onto them. They would all roll on the floor and have a lot of fun. Especially the little tiger and the little bear used to enjoy playing around like this. But the little tiger did not realize that his friend the little rabbit did not like it so much. He was less strong than him and than the little bear. So, when he was pushed by his friends, it hurt him. But he did not want to say anything because he really liked his friends.
One day the three friends were invited at the little bear’s house to have some honey pancakes. Mother bear made the best sweets in the whole forest and the fame of her honey pancakes had spread even beyond the borders of the forest and sometimes some people would come and visit her from far way, in order just to be able to taste this delicious preparation. She would serve the pancakes with a special tea that she knew how to prepare and that even exalted the taste of the pancakes more. Father bear liked to help in the cooking … but he enjoyed the eating part even more !!! He loved sweets and always used to be very hungry because after his daily work he would always practice his fighting art. There is a saying among the bears which they like to recite in German “Iss Honig wie der braune Bär, dann wirst Du auch so stark wie er”. It means “Eat honey like the brown bear, and you will become as strong as him” (in English, some would also say : "Eat honey just like mother bear, then you will be as strong as her ..."). But all the bears know that eating honey is not enough – you must also train your body. And well, if bears also like Yoga … especially shava asana after having eaten many honey pancakes … they like to make fighting competitions among themselves so that they can test their strength.
Father bear had won many championships, but he always used to say “The art of fighting is to fight disease !!! You should practice to stay fit and healthy. To learn to control your body and your mind. But you should never ever fight others, except if there is no other possibility. Beating others or shouting at others is a sign of weakness and shows that you are not strong as a bear should be. The really strong bear shows his strength by being kind to everybody and by helping all those who need his help. The real strength is within.”
So, the three friends were at the little bear’s house and they just started to eat the pancakes when suddenly father bear came in. He liked his son’s friends very much. But he had observed that especially the little tiger was not always aware of his strength and that this was troubling th
