The little finger, often called the pinky in American English, pinkie in Scottish English (from the Dutch word pink, "little finger"), or small finger in medicine, is the most ulnar and usually smallest finger of the human hand, opposite the thumb, next to the ring finger.

There are four muscles that control the little finger: Three intrinsic muscles comprising a group called the hypothenar eminence, and one extrinsic, the extensor digiti minimi:

  • Abductor minimi digiti muscle (adduction from third palmar interossei)
  • Flexor digiti minimi brevis (the "longus" is absent in most humans)

Deepa Miriam (Malayalam: ദീപ മിറിയം, Tamil: தீபா மிரியம்) (born April 1981) is an Indian playback singer of South Indian movies. Her debut film was Naan Avanillai. Deepa rose to fame with the song Kangal Iraandal in the Tamil movie Subramaniapuram.^[1]

Deepa was born and brought up in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), to a Malayalee Christian family, and completed schooling there. She began singing at a very young age. She received training in carnatic music, beginning at age seven. She has won first place in singing competitions in light music, semi-classical and classical categories, and performed many live music shows with musicians from Kerala when still in school. Deepa passed the Twelfth Board Exam with Distinction. She received her B.Tech. degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, Kerala.^[2]

At the age of 11, she was named the Best Child Singer in U.A.E., after participating in a competition, Gayiye Aur Suniye, organized by Ras al-Khaimah Radio. She sang in her first Christian devotional album, Viswasanthi, at the age of 12. The album was a super hit. Deepa has sung in more than 40 private albums in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, English, and Arabic languages.

She has received training in Hindustani music (she passed the Junior certificate course from Kerala University) and Western music (she has also passed 3 grades with Honours for piano from Trinity College, London). She was in the United States (Chicago and New Jersey) for some time, with the purpose of doing higher studies, and perhaps getting a job and settling down. But the urge to sing brought the U.S phase to an abrupt stop.

Deepa's first film was Naan avanillai, where she sang Then Kudicha Nilavu.^[1] Since then she has been involved with many projects in the Indian film industry. Kangal Irandaal, the song she sang in the Tamil film Subramaniapuram (2008), was a massive hit in the whole of South India,^[1] and earned her many awards for best female playback singer.^{[citation needed]}

Rowley was born to British parents who moved back to Bristol, England from Peru when Rowley was two years old.^{[citation needed]}

She was influenced by her family's love for many different musical styles, particularly blues, country, folk, gospel and Latin American music.^{[citation needed]} When aged 16, Rowley formed The Apogee, an original 5 piece funk/soul/acid jazz group.^{[citation needed]} At age 17, she was spotted at an open mic night in the London entertainment club, Ginglik, in Shepherd's Bush.^{[citation needed]}

Rowley studied music and art at Weston-super-Mare College and in 2003, went on to the Brighton Institute of Modern Music with the particular help and encouragement of soulsinger Carleen Anderson.^{[citation needed]} During her time at the school, Rowley toured with Ronan Keating and Enrique Iglesias providing backing vocals.^{[citation needed]}

She attended St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School, in Bristol.

2000-present[link]

In 2000, Rowley teamed up with Jazz saxophonist Ben Castle (son of Roy), well known for his work with Jamie Cullum. She began writing her own material and with Ben's encouragement and assistance she released three EPs, Beth Rowley (2004), Sweet Hours (2006) and Violets (2007).^{[citation needed]} From the Violets EP she released a single entitled, 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' which was the iTunes 'Single of the Week' for December 2007.^{[citation needed]}

Rowley has collaborated with other artists and bands, including Crowded House on their Time on Earth album providing backing vocals for the song "Transit Lounge" and Duke Special, who joined her for a duet on her début album, Little Dreamer.^[1]

Rowley's album entitled "Little Dreamer" was released in the UK on the 19 May 2008, and went straight into the UK album charts at number 6. On 4 February 2008, the lead single, "Oh My Life"(released on 3 March 2008) from the forthcoming album was featured as 'BBC Radio 2 Record of the Week'.^[2] The second single of from the album is called 'So Sublime' and was released on 12 May 2008.^{[citation needed]}

Rowley attended The Edge of Love world premiere on the 18 June, which marked the opening of the Edinburgh Film Festival. Based on the life of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, The Edge of Love opened nationwide from 27 June. The soundtrack to the film, for which Rowley recorded the exclusive track, 'Careless Talk'.^{[citation needed]}

In 2006, Rowley recorded a song entitled 'Too much too late' written by Bristol based singer/songwriter Steven Reid Williams in a collaboration featured on the album 'Corners'.^{[citation needed]} In the same year she provided the vocals on Nostalgia77's track 'Quiet Dawn' from their album 'Everything Under the Sun'.^[3]

Rowley recorded a song called "Careless Talk" for the soundtrack to the new film featuring Keira Knightley called The Edge of Love.^[4]

On 22 October 2008, Rowley appeared with Burt Bacharach on the BBC Electric Proms series, singing 24 Hours from Tulsa.^[5]

On 9 January 2009, a short clip of her song "Sweet Hours" was played on UK soap Hollyoaks on E4.^{[citation needed]} On 20 January 2009, Rowley was nominated for a Brit Award in the category for Best British Female Solo Artist.^[6]

Rowley featured in the nightclub scene in the 2009 film An Education, directed by Lone Scherfig. Her track, "You Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger", is featured prominently in the official movie soundtrack^[7] and the Sony Classics promotional website.^[8]

She has supported various artists on tour including David Gray,^[9] Tom Baxter and Duke Special.^{[citation needed]} In March 2008, Beth performed at the Play.com Live event inside Wembley Stadium, London.^[10] On 4 April 2008, Rowley appeared on BBC Radio 2's 'Friday Night is Music Night' performing two tracks with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Mermaid Theatre, London^{[citation needed]} She has also made guest appearances on 'Top of the Pops', 'Parkinson', This Morning and more recently, GMTV and also The Charlotte Church Show.^[11] Beth started her first headline tour at London's Bush Hall on 16 April 2008.^[12] She also made an appearance at the Christian arts festival, Greenbelt, in 2008, though it was not her first time at the festival.^{[citation needed]} On 25 February 2011, Beth supported Katie Melua in an Eva Cassidy style duet on a Radio 2 In Concert at the BBC Radio Theatre.^{[citation needed]}

Low Profile was originally a duo of two aspiring rappers and a DJ coming out of L.A. The groups membership consisted of WC and DJ Aladdin, who went on to pursue a career in visual art. The duo made its debut with Rhyme Syndicate Records, on a compilation album produced by Ice-T and Afrika Islam, before becoming a duo on Profile Records.

The group was a short-lived but influential West Coast hip hop duo. Together, they released one album, We're in This Together before breaking up. They also appeared on the Rhyme Syndicate compilation Rhyme Syndicate Comin' Through. DJ Aladdin began working with Ice T and WC formed a group called WC and the Maad Circle which included a then-unknown rapper named Coolio.
