Cecilia May Gibbs MBE (17 January 1877 – 27 November 1969), publishing under the name May Gibbs, was an English Australian children's author, illustrator, and cartoonist. She is best known for her gumnut babies (also known as "bush babies" or "bush fairies"), and the book Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.
Cecilia May Gibbs was born in Sydenham, Kent, in the United Kingdom, to Herbert William Gibbs and Cecilia Rogers, who were both talented artists. She was their second child, and as she was named after her mother, had the nickname "Mamie".
The family planned to move to South Australia to set up a farm in 1879 due to Herbert's failing eyesight, the result of a boyhood injury. However, as May had caught the measles, her father and uncle went to Australia, leaving her mother in England to care for the children.
On 1 June 1881, the Gibbs brothers arrived in South Australia, and began to look for the land arranged for them by a relative of theirs. Over the next few months, the brothers became disillusioned with the land. Cecilia discovered that she was pregnant again, and decided to make the voyage to Australia with her children. Despite her parents' dismay, Cecilia and the children left, and her third child, Ivan, was born at sea.

May Gibbs was one of the few early illustrators and writers of children's books to use indigenous Australian bush images - both flora and fauna. The children's book 'Bib and Bub Their Adventures' resulted from the great success in the early 1920's of a weekly comic strip series of the same name that Gibbs produced for 'The Funnies' pages of 'The Sydney Morning Herald'. One of my fondest childhood memories was of my grandmother's reading 'Bib and Bub' aloud to me - usually in a soft scary gleeful voice for maximum fright!!! She loved the rollicking rhyming and accompanied the recital with sudden pointings at characters and actions in the book. She was best with the Big Bad Banksiamen, giving me my first genuine nightmares. These characters are seen menacing a cockatoo protectively enfold...

May Gibbs's marvellous creation - the Gumnut world, with its tiny heroes and heroines and deliciously villainous villains - has fascinated generations of children. Join sweetly charming singer, Elly-May Barnes, as she reads two of May Gibbs' most charming 'bush babies' stories. Gumnut Babies The first of the bush babies, the inquisitive Nuts are full of fun and mischief. They love all the Bush Folk, but are a little afraid of lizards and snakes. Mrs Kookaburra is most fond of them as they make her laugh. In the hot sun they hang their heavy heads over the swaying leaves and sleep. Gum-Blossom Babies These shy little girls can be found clustered together on the tops of the trees. The tender-hearted Blossoms, like the Nuts, love all the Bush Folk and take much interest in the goings on a...
