Hallasan is a shield volcano on Jeju Island of South Korea. Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea. The area around the mountain is a designated national park, the Hallasan National Park (Hallasan Gungnip Gongwon/한라산국립공원/漢拏山國立公園). Hallasan is commonly considered to be one of the three main mountains of South Korea, with Jirisan and Seoraksan being the other two.

Names[link]

Alternate names for the mountain include Hanla Mountain or Mount Halla and older English sources refer to the peak as Mount Auckland.^[3][4] Hallasan is written in North Korea in Chosungul as if it were Hannasan (한나산); however, it is still pronounced as Hallasan. In the past, Hallasan has been known by numerous other names in Korean including Buag (부악/釜岳), Wonsan (원산/圓山), Jinsan (진산/鎭山), Seonsan (선산/仙山), Dumuag (두무악/頭無岳), Burasan (부라산/浮羅山), Yeongjusan 영주산(瀛州山), and Hyeolmangbong (혈망봉/穴望峯).^[5]

Geology and geography[link]

Hallasan is a massive shield volcano which forms the bulk of Jeju Island and is often taken as representing the island itself. There is a local saying stating that "Jeju Island is Hallasan; and Hallasan is Jeju." The mountain can indeed be seen from all places on the island, but its peak is often covered in clouds. The mountain has been designated Korea's Natural Monument no. 182.

The volcanic island was constructed starting in the Pliocene epoch atop the continental shelf, which is presently about 100 m (300 ft) below sea level in that area. Eruptions of basalt and trachyte lava built the island above sea level, and it now reaches a height of 1,950 metres (6,398 ft). A large volcanic crater over 400 m (1,300 ft) in diameter tops the volcano. About 360 parasitic cones, or oreum (오름) in the Jeju dialect, are found on the volcano's flanks. Most of them are cinder cones and scoria cones, but there are also some lava domes and about 20 tuff rings near the coast and offshore, which were formed by underwater phreatic eruptions. The most recent eruptions occurred on the flanks in 1002 and 1007.

There is a crater lake on Hallasan called Baengnokdam (백록담/白鹿潭), literally "white deer lake." There is a legend attributing the name of the lake to otherworldly men who descend from heaven to play with white deer. Depending on the season, the circumference of the lake is up to 2 kilometres with a depth up to about 100 meters.

The mountain is home to Gwaneumsa, the oldest Buddhist temple on the island. The temple was originally built during the Goryeo Dynasty. Like many other temples in Korea, Gwaneumsa was destroyed and rebuilt in the 20th century. There is a memorial site outside the temple, remembering the victims of the Jeju uprising that took place between 1948 and 1950. It is one of the most visited places of the island.

There are five hiking trails on Hallasan. They are:

• Gwaneumsa Trail (관음사) - 8.7 km
• Eorimok Trail (어리목) - 4.7 km
• Seongpanak Trail (성판악) - 9.6 km
• Yeongsil Trail (영실) - 3.7 km
• Donnaeko Trail (돈내코) - 9.1 km

The Donnaeko trail was officially reopened to the public on December 4, 2009, after a fifteen year hiatus. Only the Gwaneumsa and Seongpanak trails lead to the summit. The Donnaeko, Eorimok and Yeongsil courses only go as far as Witse Oreum, as the rest of the trail leading to the peak has been closed off since 1994 in order to restore and protect the vegetation.

Lee Seung Gi (Hangul: 이승기, Hanja: 李昇基) was born on 13 January 1987. He is a South Korean singer, actor and MC. He is well known as the MC for television programme Strong Heart, from 2009 to March 2012.

Scouted by singer Lee Sun Hee, Lee Seung Gi trained for 2 years before debuting on 5 June 2004 at the age of 17. "Because You're My Girl", his debut song from his first album The Dream Of A Moth, was a ballad which created "liking older women" syndrome in South Korea. With this song, he won the 'Best Newcomer award in various music awards ceremonies in 2004 (such as M.net KM Music Festival, SBS Music Awards and MBC Best 10 Singers Music Festival). In 2007, he also won the "Best Male Solo Artist" award^[1] in the M.net KM Music Festival with his song "White Lie" from his third album Story Of Separation.

Lee Seung Gi released a digital single Will You Marry Me in 2009. With this single, he received the "Digital Single Bonsang" award^[2] in the 24th Golden Disk Awards. In 2010, he recorded a duet version of his 2007 song Smile Boy with South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna, and the song was the official 2010 FIFA World Cup commercial song in South Korea.^[3][4] He also received the "Digital Single Bonsang" award^[5] for the second consecutive time in the 25th Golden Disk Awards with his song "Love Taught Me To Drink".

In 2005, Lee Seung Gi guest-starred in MBC's sitcom Nonstop 5. He then officially debuted as an actor in KBS's 2006 weekend drama The Infamous Chil Sisters. In 2008, he was offered the main character role in MBC's historical drama The Return of Iljimae, but was forced to turn down the offer due to his tight schedule. He was cast as the main male character of SBS's weekend drama Brilliant Legacy in 2009, starring with Korean actresses Han Hyo Joo and Moon Chae Won. The drama maintained its top spot in viewer ratings for ten consecutive weeks and ended on July 26, 2009 with its 28th episode attaining a high viewer rating of 47.1%.^[6] The huge success boosted Lee Seung Gi's popularity as an actor in both South Korea and overseas. With this drama, he received the "Excellence in Acting (Special Production)" award, the "Top 10 Stars" award and the "Best Couple" award with Han Hyo Joo in the 2009 SBS Drama Awards.^[7] His great performance in 2010 SBS's Wednesday-Thursday drama My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox similarly earned him his second "Excellence in Acting (Drama Special)" award, "Top 10 Stars" award and "Best Couple" award with his co-star Shin Min Ah in the 2010 SBS Drama Awards.^[8] Also, in 2012, he participated in a drama called The King 2 Hearts.

Lee graduated from Dongguk University within 4 years, obtaining his degree in International Trade and Commerce on February 20, 2009 and received a Special Achievement Award^[9] from the university. He is currently continuing his studies in the Graduate School of Dongguk University.

In March 2012, Lee announced his departure from Strong Heart, in order to focus on his singing career. He recorded his last episode on 15 March, which was broadcast on 3 April.^[10]
