Armitage Gone! Dance - Drastic-Classicism (1981, revised 2009)
Drastic-Classicism (1981/2009) Choreography: Karole Armitage Original Score: Rhys Chatham, Drastic Classicism Lighting Design: Clifton Taylor Costumes: Peter Speliopoulos and Karen Young Guitarists: Tom Gerke, Steve Gunn, Sarah Lipstate, Matt Mottel Drummer: Kevin Shea The first incarnation of Drastic-Classicism had a cast of seven dancers, a drummer and four guitarists. The opening three movements were performed and then, after an intermission, the same three movements were repeated in new costumes with everyone free to improvise on the material. For the revival, the repeat has been eliminated but some of the improvisation remains. This is an excerpt from the 2nd movement of Drastic-Classicism performed by Armitage Gone! Dance at The Kitchen in NYC.

Armitage Gone! Dance in "Three Theories" at Jacob's Pillow
www.jacobspillow.org A flurry of undulating solos, dynamic duets, and sensual ensemble pieces, acclaimed choreographer Karole Armitage's new "Three Theories" is an explosion of dance. Inspired by the book "The Elegant Universe" by physicist Brian Greene, "Three Theories"explores scientific themes including quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory, all through Armitage's signature brand of athletic contemporary ballet. This evening-length work is set to a varied score including music by maverick composer Rhys Chatham, the lyrical, haunting tones of Sangeeta Shankar's South Indian classical carnatic violin music, and John Luther Adams's evocative "Dark Waves." Karole Armitage has worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham, and Madonna, and her dance repertoire stretches from ballet to Broadway. Her unmistakable voice pushes the boundaries among movement, music, and the visual arts to embody dance that "explodes in every sense and dazzles the eye" and remains "vividly imprinted in your memory." (Nouvel Observateur, France). At Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, located in Becket, MA, July 14-18

Armitage Gone! Dance - Ligeti Essays (2006) - Duet and Quartet
Ligeti Essays (2005) Choreography: Karole Armitage Music: György Ligeti Set: David Salle Costumes: Peter Speliopoulos Lighting: Clifton Taylor Ligeti Essays, by choreographer Karole Armitage to songs by György Ligeti, is a dance sculpted on a stark black and white stage bringing to mind an ice storm, beautiful and unsettling. The songs, structured with haiku like compression, reveal many different states of mind from the sublime to the sarcastic. The dancers appear in duets, solos, and quartets, snatching thought from the air, to capture arresting psychological images.

Bolshoi-Reflections-Karole Armitage-Feature 1(2) Exclusive interview
KAROLE ARMITAGE (Artistic Director) began her professional career in 1973 as a member of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, Switzerland, a company rooted in the Balanchine aesthetic and devoted exclusively to his repertory. There she performed many Balanchine masterworks including Agon, The Four Temperaments and Serenade. From 1976--1981 she was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company where she danced in leading roles across the globe. Armitage created her first piece, Ne, in 1978, followed by Drastic-Classicism in 1981. Throughout the 80s she led her own New York-based dance company and incorporated the Armitage Ballet in 1985. In 1984, after a performance of her Watteau Duets at Dance Theater Workshop, Mikhail Baryshnikov invited her to create a work for American Ballet Theatre. In 1987, Rudolph Nureyev asked her to create her fourth dance for the Paris Opera Ballet. Its success led to many European commissions. In 1990, Armitage chose to maintain her company on a project basis in order to pursue work with major European ballet and opera companies. In 1990, Armitage was appointed Director of MaggioDanza in Florence, Italy, where from 1995 to 1998 she supervised 45 dancers in the classical repertoire and created her own work. From 1999 to 2002 she was the resident choreographer of the Ballet de Lorraine in France, which toured her work throughout Europe. In 2004, she made a triumphant return to New York when the Joyce Theater invited her to create a new ballet ...

Armitage Gone! Dance - Watteau Duets
Part of Dance Umbrella 2011 and the V&A;'s autumn exhibition Post Modernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990, Armitage Gone! Dance performs another Armitage classic. THE WATTEAU DUETS (1985), set to a score performed live by sonic duo TALIBAM!, portrays the battle of the sexes as a war dance with a sense of humour.
Through sly references to the conventions of classical pas de deux, the audience is drawn into the intense world of a couple as they move through various stages of courtship, from secretive glances via erotic pleasure to complex normality. This is a one-off opportunity to see a rarely performed work, specially staged for the museum's unique setting.
The second half of the evening offers audiences the opportunity to share in a discussion between Karole Armitage and notable experts in the fields of Postmodernism and dance.

Armitage Gone! Dance - Two Theories & Drastic-Classicism
Part of Dance Umbrella 2011. Not seen in London since 1985, 80s wild child Karole Armitage returns to the festival with the revival of a classic from the punk era and a new work. Striking, elegant and dramatic, TWO THEORIES: QUANTUM & STRING is performed by the company of ten brilliant dancers, and explores the poetry underlying the pillars of 20th century theoretical physics.
Armitage’s signature work from 1981, DRASTIC-CLASSICISM, is performed to Rhys Chatham’s clangorous score, played live by five musicians amongst the dancers. When this outrageously high-energy performance premiered in New York 30 years ago, it shocked audiences with its audacity, pairing classical movement with the raw energy of punk’s wall of sound. Today its impact is no less striking.

Armitage Gone! Dance Itutu (2009)
ITUTU (2009) Choreography: Karole Armitage Music: Burkina Electric and Lukas Ligeti Costumes: Peter Speliopoulos Set: Philip Taaffe Lighting: Clifton Taylor Itutu is a collaboration between Armitage Gone! Dance, composer Lukas Ligeti and West African electronica band, Burkina Electric. This evening-long work is loosely inspired by the African metaphysical idea of a world without barriers, no Great Divide -- where dance and music are not separate art forms as in the West, where every dancer is a musician and every musician a dancer, where past and present, human and spirit intersect, nourish each other...and in the meeting, are "hotting the world up." In this vision of the world, dance allows the body to receive the spirit -- dance becomes the instrument of spiritual encounter.
