  Ardcroney, officially Ardcrony (Irish: Ard Cróine, meaning "Cronia's height"), is a village and townland on the N52 National secondary road 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Nenagh in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is also the name of a civil parish in the historical barony of Ormond Lower. It is halfway between Nenagh and Borrisokane. Ardcroney Church Of Ireland church was moved to Bunratty folk park where it was unveiled in 1998. Ardcroney is also home to a Junior soccer club, Ardcroney FC.. Set up in 1982 it currently has a Junior, Youth, u16, u14, 12 and 2 u10 teams.

  Birr
  Birr (Irish: Biorra; pronounced [bʌːr]) is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. It was formerly called Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were local landowners and hereditary Earls of Rosse. The town lies within a parish of the same name in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe.
  Birr is a designated Irish Heritage Town with a carefully preserved Georgian heritage. Birr itself has graceful wide streets and elegant buildings. Many of the houses in John's Place and Oxmantown Mall have exquisite fanlight windows of the Georgian period.
  The town is situated at the meeting of the Camcor and Little Brosna rivers which flow on into the River Shannon near Victoria Lock.
  Birr railway station opened on 8 March 1858, but finally closed on 1 January 1963.
  The Ormond Flying Club has been in operation at Birr Airfield for over 30 years. The area has been linked with aviation for some time - as a British Army airstrip was previously near the current field.^{[citation needed]}
  Birr lies on the N52 and N62 national secondary roads. The routes are combined as they pass through Birr. The R439, R440 and R489 regional roads also terminate in the town.

  Borrisokane
  Borrisokane (Irish: Buiríos Uí Chéin, meaning "the Burgage of the Cianacht" ) is a town in North Tipperary, Ireland. In 2006 it had a population of approximately 1,145. It is situated on the N52/N65 National secondary road between Nenagh and Portumna and the N52 between Nenagh and Birr. The Ballyfinboy River flows through the town on its way to Lough Derg which is only 12 km to the west. It is a civil parish in the historical barony of Ormond Lower and an Ecclesiastical parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe.
  During the Norman invasion of Ireland, the area now known as Borrisokane was the property of the O'Carrolls of Ely who claimed to be descendants of the 'Clan or Cian or the Cianacht. The O’Kennedys were another significant ruling family, owning tower houses in surrounding townlands.
  During the Cromwellian Plantation, Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Anglesey, the Earl of Cork and the Earl of Arran were among those granted lands at Borrisokane. Arran hill, a townland of Borrisokane, is thought likely to be named after the latter.

  Borrisoleigh (Irish: Buiríos Ó Luigheach, meaning "O'Lea's Borough") is a small town in North Tipperary in Ireland. According to the 2006 census, the town has a population of 1,178^{[citation needed]}. The parish, which encompasses 14,215 acres (57.53 km²), has a population of just 2,000--down from a high count of 7,000 taken in 1842, before An Górta Mór. It is in the barony of Kilnamanagh Upper, and it is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. The parish church is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, and is paired with an older church some three kilometers away at Ileagh.
  It is a busy market town on the R498 Nenagh-Thurles road. To the east, the R501 goes to Templemore with fine views of the Devil's Bit mountain on the left hand side near Drom and Barnane.
  Borrisoleigh derives its name from the ancient territory of Uí Luighdheach in which it was situated. An annual cattle fair was held here every 27th of November until the 1960s.
  The first recorded settlement here was an abbey established by St. Cualan at Glean Caoin, anglicized as "Glenkeen Abbey." Kilcuilan (St. Cualan's Church) was dedicated to him at a nearby holy well. A bell attributed to this saint, known as the "Bearnan Culan" or "Glenkeen Bell" is now housed at the British Museum in London. A replica may be seen in the sanctuary of the parish church in Borrisoleigh.

  Carlow
  Carlow (Irish: Ceatharlach) is the county town of County Carlow in Ireland. It is situated in the south-east of Ireland, 84 km from Dublin. County Carlow is the second smallest county in Ireland by area, however Carlow Town is the 14th largest urban area in Ireland by population according to the 2006 census. The population of the town and its environs is 23,030 according to the 2006 census. The River Barrow flows through the town, and forms the historic boundary between counties Laois and Carlow: the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 included the town entirely in County Carlow. The settlement of Carlow is thousands of years old and pre-dates written Irish history. The town has played a major role in Irish history, serving as the capital of the country in the 14th century. It was voted the cleanest town in Ireland by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) in 2010.
  The name Carlow is an anglicization of the Irish language name Ceatharlach. Historically, it was anglicized as Caherlagh,Caterlagh and Catherlagh, which are closer to the Irish spelling. According to logainm.ie, the first part of the name derives from the Old Irish word cethrae ("animals, cattle, herds, flocks"), which is related to ceathar ("four") and therefore signified "four-legged".   Castleiney
  Castleiney, officially Castleleiny and historically "Castlelyny" (Irish: Caisleán Laighnigh), is a village in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is one half of the Roman Catholic parish of Loughmore-Castleiney. It is in the barony of Eliogarty.
  It is approximately 5 km from Templemore and approximately 7 km from Loughmore. The village is sometimes known locally as The Washpen. There is a stone attesting to this fact erected in the village.
  The village is reached from Templemore by taking the R433 road out of Templemore and turning right onto the R502 approximately one kilometre outside Templemore. One then crosses the bridge over the Dublin to Cork railway and takes the first right turn onto local road L3205, which takes one towards Castleiney village.

  Cloughjordan
  Cloughjordan, officially Cloghjordan ( /klɒkˈdʒɔrdən/ klok-JOR-dən, Irish: Cloch Shiurdáin, meaning "Siurdán's stone"), is a town in North Tipperary in Ireland. It is in the barony of Ormond Lower, and it is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe.
  The town is situated in the north-western part of North Tipperary close to the Offaly border. It is almost equidistant from Nenagh, Roscrea and Birr and is close to Ireland's largest river, the Shannon, and Lough Derg.
  Poet and patriot Thomas McDonagh, a native of Cloughjordan, described it as a place “in calm of middle country”.
  Unusually for a town of its size (the 2002 Census Records places the population at 431), it has three churches – Roman Catholic (SS. Michael and John’s, built in 1898), Church of Ireland (St. Kieran’s, 1837) and Methodist (1875).
  The alternate spelling is recognised.
  Developed at the intersection of travel routes between Nenagh, Birr and Moneygall, the village of Cloughjordan began as an inhabited settlement during the Norman lordship of Ireland of the 13th and 14th centuries when the De Marisco family were allotted land in Ormond under the overlordship of the Butlers by King Henry II. One unit of the De Mariscos (Morris or Morrissey in modern terms) moved into this area, took over the territory and built a stone castle and manor house guarded by a moat surrounding the dwelling.

  County Kilkenny (Irish: Contae Chill Chainnigh) is a county in Ireland. It is part of the South-East Region and is also located in the province of Leinster. It is named after the city of Kilkenny. The territory of the county was the core part of the ancient Irish Kingdom of Osraige which in turn was the core of the Diocese of Ossory. Kilkenny County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county is 95,360.
  Kilkenny is the 16th largest of Ireland’s 32 counties in area and the 21st largest in terms of population. It is the third largest of Leinster’s 12 counties in size and seventh largest in terms of population.
  The county was also divided into subdivisions called baronies. Baronies are divided into townlands. There were 9 baronies and about 800 townlands in Kilkenny in 1802. Each barony was made up of a number of parishes or parts of parishes. Both civil parishes and baronies are now largely obsolete (except for some purposes such as legal transactions involving land) and are no longer used for local government purposes.

  Dromineer
  Dromineer (Irish: Drom Inbhir, meaning "ridge of the river mouth") is a small village in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is situated on the shores of Lough Derg on the River Shannon. The village is located 10 kilometres north of Nenagh. It is a civil parish in the historical barony of Ormond Lower.
  Home to a 13th-century towerhouse, idyllic scenery, a public harbour and other facilities, it is a popular place to visit, especially for those out boating on the lake. The name Dromineer in Irish is "Drom Inbhir", meaning the back or the ford of the river.
  Amenities in Dromineer include restaurant and pub (The Whiskey Still), accommodation (such as The Dromineer Hostel) and a children's playground.
  Dromineer is home to the Lough Derg Lifeboat, which is the RNLI's third inland lifeboat station and was the first inland station in the Republic of Ireland.

  Dublin

  Dundalk
  Dundalk (/ˌdʌnˈdɔːlk/, from Irish: Dún Dealgan meaning "Dalgan's stronghold") is the county town of County Louth in Ireland. It is situated where the Castletown River flows into Dundalk Bay. The town is close to the border with Northern Ireland and equidistant from Dublin and Belfast. The town's name, which was historically written as Dundalgan, has associations with the mythical warrior Cú Chulainn. The town's crest reads Mé do rug Cú Chulainn Cróga, meaning "I gave birth to brave Cú Chulainn". It was granted its charter in 1189. Within legally defined boundaries it is the largest town in Ireland (pop. 31,073). It is also the largest by area. Dundalk's rural population is 25,581 giving a combined statistical area of 56,654.
  In 2003 Dundalk was amongst nine cities and towns to be designated Gateway status in the Irish Government's National Spatial Strategy.
  The Dundalk area has been inhabited since at least 3500 BC, when Neolithic farmers first came to Ireland. A tangible reminder of their presence can still be seen in the form of the Proleek Dolmen, the eroded remains of a megalithic tomb located at Ballymascanlon a few miles to the north of Dundalk. Celtic culture arrived in Ireland around 500 BC. According to the legendary historical accounts, the group settled in North Louth were known as the Conaille Muirtheimhne and took their name from Conaill Carnagh, legendary chief of the Red Branch Knights of Ulster. Their land now forms upper and lower Dundalk.

  Holycross
  Holycross (Irish: Mainistir na Croise Naofa) is a village in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is in the barony of Eliogarty. Unusually, the civil parish straddles two counties and the baronies of Eliogarty and of Middle Third (South Tipperary). It is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly.
  The village developed around the Cistercian abbey on the River Suir. Its population was 700 at the 2006 census.
  Holy Cross was founded in 1180 by King Donal Mor O'Brien and was renovated and added to during the 15th century. It became a place of pilgrimage when a relic of the true cross was presented to the Cistercians Monks. The monastery was suppressed by King Henry VIII during the 16th century. The Abbey was abandoned circa 1650, fell into ruin. The late Dr. Thomas Morris, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, inspired the reconstruction of the Abbey which was opened in 1975. The church of this Cistercian Abbey was re-roofed and restored to its former glory as one of the finest Irish 15th-century churches. The foundation in 1169 was originally by the Benedictine order.

  Keeper Hill
  Keeper Hill or Slievekimalta (from Irish: Sliabh Coimeálta, meaning "mountain of guarding") is a 694 m (2,277 ft) mountain in North Tipperary, Ireland.
  Keeper Hill is situated in the Slieve Felim mountain range in North Tipperary and is just 15km east of Limerick City. Keeper Hill is the highest mountain in the Shannon area and the 117th highest in Ireland. The ‘hill’ is wrapped in a forestry area of 3,300 hectares. The 300 hectare summit is designated as a National Heritage Area, considered important for the habitats present or species of plants and animals whose habitat needs protection. This loop overlaps with a short section of the Slieve Felim Way - a 30km waymarked route which travels from Murroe in County Limerick to Silvermines in County Tipperary. En-route it passes through the small but pleasant village of Toor and onward across the shoulder of Keeper Hill. While the loop explores the lower shoulders of Keeper Hill, the ‘hardy’ walker will enjoy incorporating the ‘trek’ to the summit. This loop walk is part of the National Looped Walks and is marked using the standard purple National Looped Walk directional arrows.

  Kilkenny Castle
  Kilkenny Castle (Irish: Caisleán Chill Chainnigh) is a castle in Kilkenny, Ireland built in 1195 by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke to control a fording-point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. It was a symbol of Norman occupation and in its original thirteenth-century condition it would have formed an important element of the defences of the town with four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch, part of which can still be seen today on the Parade.
  The property was transferred to the people of Kilkenny in 1967 for £50 and the castle and grounds are now managed by the Office of Public Works. The gardens and parkland adjoining the castle are open to the public. The Parade Tower is a conference venue. Awards and conferring ceremonies of the graduates of "Kilkenny Campus" of National University of Ireland, Maynooth have been held there since 2002.
  Kilkenny Castle has been an important site since Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, commonly known as Strongbow constructed the first castle, probably a wooden structure, in the 12th century. The Anglo-Normans had established a castle in 1173, possibly on the site of an earlier residence of the Mac Giolla Phádraig kings of Osraighe. Kilkenny formed part of the lordship of Leinster, which was granted to Strongbow. Strongbow’s daughter and heiress, Isabel married William Marshall in 1189. The Earl Marshall owned large estates in Ireland, England, Wales and France and managed them effectively. He appointed Geoffrey fitz Robert as seneschal of Leinster and so began a major phase of development in Kilkenny, including the construction of Kilkenny Castle and the agreement of rents and privileges with burgesses or citizens of the borough. The first stone castle on the site, was completed in 1213. This was a square-shaped castle with towers at each corner; three of these original four towers survive to this day

  Lancashire
  Lancashire ( /ˈlæŋkəʃər/ or, less commonly, /ˈlæŋkəʃɪər/) is a non-metropolitan county of historic origin in the North West of England. It takes its name from the city of Lancaster, and is sometimes known as the County of Lancaster. Although Lancaster is still considered to be the county town, Lancashire County Council is based in Preston. Lancashire is sometimes referred to by the abbreviation Lancs, as originally used by the Royal Mail. The population of the county is 1,449,700. People from the county are known as Lancastrians.
  The history of Lancashire is thought to have begun with its founding in the 12th century. In the Domesday Book (1086), some of its lands had been treated as part of Yorkshire. The land that lay Inter Ripam et Mersam, "between the Ribble and Mersey", formed part of the returns for Cheshire. Once its initial boundaries were established, it bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire.
  Lancashire emerged during the Industrial Revolution as a major commercial and industrial region. The county encompassed several hundred mill towns and collieries.   Lorrha has a rich ecclesiastical history evidenced by the ruins within the village. Beside the Roman Catholic Church (c1912), at the south of the village are the remains of a Dominican Friary founded in the 13th century by Walter de Burgh, Earl of Ulster . To the east of the village stands the Church of Ireland on the site of St. Ruadhan's church which was built c. 1000A.D. and was itself built on the site of St. Ruadhan's Abbey, founded in the C6th. Remains of two C8th high crosses stand in the churchyard . The Augustinian Abbey founded in the C12th by the Order of Canons Regular stands nearby. The carved head over the door is thought to represent the wife of Walter De Burgh . Water for the monastic settlement was supplied from St. Ruadhan's well located south of the road that passes the present Church of Ireland cemetery.

  Loughmore is one half of the Roman Catholic parish of Loughmore-Castleiney in the archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. It is also in the historical barony of Eliogarty.
  The village's Irish-language name Luach Maigh (earlier: Luach-mhagh) means "reward-field". Today's Loughmore – which would correspond to Irish Loch Mór ("great lake") – is the result of a mistake by British mapmakers of the 19th century. The Purcell family's Loughmoe Castle, near the village, retains a more accurate and older version of the name.
  Why certain localities in Ireland were given this name is probably accounted for by the circumstance that "in old times some tenant held them free of direct rent, as a reward for some signal service, or on condition of fulfilling some special duty". However, a local tradition explains that in this particular case the name alludes to the manner in which the Purcells first gained proprietorship of area. Legend has it that a king lived in the Castle, and offered his daughters hand to whomsoever could rid the land of a boar and sow of "gigantic size" who uprooted crops and killed whoever they came into contact with. A youth named Purcell killed the boar with a bow and arrow and thus the area in which the Castle stands is known as "the field of the reward". The legend is alluded to in the Purcell family's coat of arms, which depicts the heads of four boars.

  Puckane, officially Puckaun (Irish: Pocán), is a village in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is also a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe. The village is located 10 km north of Nenagh along the R493 and close to Lough Derg and Dromineer. It has a population of about 257 per 2006 census.
  The songwriter Shane MacGowan spent much of his childhood in the neighbouring townland of Carney and has immortalised a number of local places in his songs such as "The Broad Majestic Shannon". The village was also mentioned in a well-known Christy Moore cover of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues song "The Fairy Tale of New York". A local landmark is "Paddy Kennedy's Pub".

  Rearcross (Irish: Crois na Rae) is a village in the townland of Reardnogy in North Tipperary, Ireland. It is located on the R503 Thurles to Limerick Regional Road, in the Slieve Felim Mountains. It is in the Roman Catholic parish of Kilcommon and Hollyford and Rearcross, in the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, and also in the historical barony of Owney and Arra.
  The church was designed by a Swiss architect for a Wesleyan congregation. It was a temporary structure situated in Northumbria and used by the mining community there. During the 1880s the community at Rearcross had to walk quite a distance to hear mass in the absence of a local church. At the time, diocesan funds were heavily committed to finishing the cathedral in Thurles and with resources stretched the bishop dispatched the local priests on fund-raising drives to America. The parish priest in Rearcross, Fr. William J. McKeogh, on one such expedition succeeded in raising the remarkable sum of £4,400 in America while other priests returned with mere hundreds of pounds. Naturally this resulted in the bishop's high opinion being bestowed on Fr. McKeogh who seems to have kept back £400 himself.^{[citation needed]}

  The town is located in the south midlands, 44 miles (71 km) from Limerick City and 76 miles (122 km) from Dublin City. It is at the crossroads of the N7 road between Dublin and Limerick and the N62 between Athlone and Horse and Jockey where it connects to the main M8 motorway between Dublin and Cork. Roscrea was bypassed following the completion of the M7 Dublin - Limerick motorway in December 2010. Both cities are easily accessible from the town with continuous motorway/dual carriageway in either direction from Roscrea. Other neighbouring towns on the road that were also bypassed were Moneygall and Nenagh.
  Roscrea is well connected by bus routes with two Bus Éireann lines going through the town. Route 12 connects Dublin and Limerick while route 71 connects Athlone to Cork. A private bus contractor, JJ Kavanagh and Sons, provides extra bus services. Roscrea is connected to the Irish railway network on a branch from Limerick to Ballybrophy (where it joins the main Cork-Dublin line). At one time there was a branch from Roscrea to nearby Birr in County Offaly. Roscrea railway station opened on 19 October 1857.

It lies immediately north of the Silvermine mountain range and takes its name from the extensive mines of lead, zinc, copper, baryte and silver nearby. Towards the very south of the Silvermine Mountains is the highest peak in the mountains, Keeper Hill or in Irish Sliabh Cimeálta, which rises to 695m, dominating the area.   The earliest record of mining in the district is from 1289, but was short lived. Mining resumed in the 17th century and continued intermittently until 1874. It restarted in 1949, and shortly after a world-class deposit of baryte was found and opencast mining of this began in 1963 by Magcobar (Ireland) Ltd. Soon after a multi-million tonne orebody grading about 11% combined lead and zinc was also discovered. This was worked underground from 1968 to 1982 by Mogul of Ireland Ltd. The Magcobar mine closed in September 1992, and its extensive spoil heaps are a prominent local landmark, visible for miles. The Mogul mine became famous for the many fine mineral specimens it produced, particularly of the ore minerals galena and sphalerite.

Alternatively, the motorway may be accessed via the village of Templetouhy. To the west, the R501, tracking the Devil's Bit mountain range, goes to Borrisoleigh. The monastery became a centre of learning and produced (about 1160) the Book of Leinster, which is now housed in Trinity College Dublin. The Book is an important collection of history, tales and poems written in Middle Irish and is believed to be the work of Áed Ua Crimthainn, a 12th century abbot of Terryglass.

  Father Alec Reid, C.Ss.R. is an Irish priest noted for his facilitator role in the Northern Ireland peace process. Born and raised in Nenagh, County Tipperary, Reid was professed as a Redemptorist in 1950, and ordained a priest seven years later. For the next four years, he gave Parish Missions in Limerick, Dundalk and Galway (Esker), before moving to Clonard monastery in Belfast, where he would spend almost the next forty years. The Redemptorist Monastery at Clonard stands on the interface between the Nationalist Catholic Community and the Protestant Shankill Road.
  In 1988 he delivered the last rites to two Royal Signals corporals killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), the 'Corporals killings', after they drove into a Republican funeral. A photograph of his involvement in that incident became one of the enduring images of the Troubles. In the late 1980s, Reid facilitated a series of meetings between Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams and Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume, in an effort to establish a 'Pan-Nationalist front' to enable a move toward renouncing violence in favour of negotiation. Reid then acted as their contact person with the Irish Government in Dublin from a 1987 meeting with Charles Haughey up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. In this role, which was not public knowledge at the time, he held meetings with various Taoisigh, and particularly with Martin Mansergh advisor to various Fianna Fáil leaders.

While her classmates were busy preparing for the exams in their last year before graduation, Bernadette enjoyed the success of a dream come true: dancing as one of the leading ladies in Lord of the Dance next to Michael Flatley.   Robert ("Bob") Morton Newburgh Tisdall (16 May 1907 in Nuwara Eliya, Ceylon now Sri Lanka – 27 July 2004 in Nambour, Queensland, Australia) was an Irish athlete who won a gold medal in the 400 metre hurdles at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
  Tisdall was raised in Nenagh, County Tipperary. He had run only six 400 m hurdles when he won the gold medal at the 1932 Olympic Games in a world record time of 51.7 seconds, which was not recognised under the rules of time because he had a hit a hurdle. Later, because of this incident, the rules were changed and the President of the IOC, Juan Antonio Samaranch, presented Tisdall with a Waterford crystal rose bowl with the image of him knocking over the last hurdle etched into the glass.
  Following prep school at Mourne Grange, Kilkeel he went on to Shrewsbury, Tisdall won the Public Schools 440 yards (402 m), and at Cambridge he won a record four events – 440 yards (402 m) and 120 yards (110 m) hurdles, long jump and shot put – in the annual match against Oxford. This record was only equalled nearly 60 years later.   Cormac Ó Gráda is an Irish economist, a professor of economics at University College Dublin, and a prolific author of books and academic papers.

  Daniel Morrissey (died 1981) was an Irish politician who served in Dáil Éireann for thirty-five years.
  He was a native of Nenagh, County Tipperary. He was first elected to the 3rd Dáil at the 1922 general election as a Labour Party Teachta Dála (TD) for Tipperary Mid, North and South. He stood at the 1932 general election as an independent candidate, but joined Cumann na nGaedheal the following year.
  In the First Inter-Party Government, he was appointed to the Cabinet under John A. Costello in 1948 as Minister for Industry and Commerce. In 1954, he declined accepting a cabinet position in the Second Inter-Party Government due to his age.
  In Professor Tom Garvin's review of the 1950s News from a New Republic, he comes in for praise as a moderniser and the instigator of the Industrial Development Authority. Garvin places him with a cross party group including Gerard Sweetman of Fine Gael and William Norton of the Labour Party as well as Seán Lemass of Fianna Fáil who were pushing a modernising agenda.

  Ryan made his debut for Munster against Ospreys on 3 September 2004, during a Celtic League fixture.He made his Heineken Cup debut against Llanelli Scarlets on 16 December 2007.He played for Munster in their 2007-08 Heineken Cup semi-final against Saracens, and was on the bench for the 2008 Heineken Cup Final against Stade Toulousain, which Munster won 16-13.
  Ryan was part of the Munster squad that won the 2008-09 Celtic League, and he added a second Celtic League winners medal to his collection when Munster beat arch-rivals, and newly crowned Heineken Cup champions, Leinster 19-9 in the 2011 Magners League Grand Final. • Eddie Hackett
  Eddie Hackett (1910–1996) was an Irish golf course architect. Eddie Hackett was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1910. As a boy he suffered from tuberculosis, the effects of which left him without the strength or stamina to play active sports. He began playing golf with his father, and as a teenager got a job at his hometown Royal Dublin Golf Club. By the 1930s he had worked his way up as a golf professional, making clubs and competing in tournaments. In 1939 became the head golf professional at Portmarnock Golf Club.
  Unlike the better-known of Hackett's contemporary golf course architects like Pete Dye and Robert Trent Jones, who commonly move tons of soil to create their courses, Hackett worked like the architects of a bygone era, laying out a course on the land as he found it. As Hackett himself said, "I find that nature is the best architect . . . I try to dress up what the Good Lord provides."
  While his designs show his appreciation of the classic Scottish links where he refined his game, his own designs rarely include the forced carries or the blind shots sometimes found on older links such as Carnoustie or Royal Troon.

  Henry III of England
  Henry III (1 October 1207 – 16 November 1272) was the son and successor of John as King of England, reigning for 56 years from 1216 until his death. His contemporaries knew him as Henry of Winchester. He was the first child king in England since the reign of Æthelred the Unready. England prospered during his reign and his greatest monument is Westminster, which he made the seat of his government and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine to Edward the Confessor. He is the first of only five monarchs to reign in the Kingdom of England or its successor states for 50 years or more, the others being Edward III (1327–1377), George III (1760–1820), Victoria (1837–1901) and Elizabeth II (1952–present).
  He assumed the crown under the regency of the popular William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, but the England he inherited had undergone several drastic changes in the reign of his father. He spent much of his reign fighting the barons over Magna Carta and the royal rights, and was eventually forced to call the first "parliament" in 1264. He was also unsuccessful on the Continent, where he endeavoured to re-establish English control over Normandy, Anjou, and Aquitaine.

  Henry Ireton
  Henry Ireton (1611 – 26 November 1651) was an English general in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War. He was the son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell.
  He was the eldest son of German Ireton of Attenborough, Nottinghamshire, and was baptized in St. Mary's Church on 3 November 1611. He became a gentleman commoner of Trinity College, Oxford in 1626, graduated BA in 1629 and entered the Middle Temple the same year.
  On the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the parliamentary army, fighting at the Battle of Edgehill in October 1642, and at the Battle of Gainsborough in July 1643. He was made deputy-governor of the Isle of Ely by Cromwell and served under Manchester in the Yorkshire campaign and at the second Battle of Newbury, afterwards supporting Cromwell in his accusations of incompetency against the general.
  On the night before the battle of Naseby, in June 1645, Ireton succeeded in surprising the Royalist army and captured many prisoners. The next day, on the suggestion of Cromwell, he was made commissary-general and appointed to the command of the left wing, Cromwell himself commanding the right. The wing under Ireton was completely broken by the impetuous charge of Rupert and Ireton was wounded and taken prisoner, but Cromwell charged and successfully routed the Royalists, freeing prisoners including Ireton.

  John Dominic Crossan (born 1934) is an Irish-American New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, and former Catholic priest known for co-chairing the Jesus Seminar. Crossan is a major figure in the fields of anthropology of the Ancient Mediterranean and New Testament Studies, particularly in the application of postmodern hermeneutical approaches for the avant-garde Biblical studies journal Semeia.^{[citation needed]} He is also a lecturer who has appeared in television documentaries about Jesus and the Bible. He is a key figure in research into the historical Jesus.
  Crossan was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.Though his father was a banker, Crossan was steeped in the rural Irish life, which he experienced through frequent visits to the home of his paternal grandparents. On graduation from St. Eunan's College, a boarding high school, in 1950, Crossan joined the Servites, a Catholic religious order, and moved to the United States. He was trained at Stonebridge Seminary, Lake Bluff, Illinois, then ordained a priest in 1957. Crossan returned to Ireland, where he earned his Doctor of Divinity in 1959 at St. Patrick's College Maynooth, the Irish national seminary. He then completed two more years of study in biblical languages at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Thus equipped, he returned to the seminary where he had trained, and through four years of teaching he "first began to learn something about the Bible" as he puts it.^{[citation needed]} In 1965 Crossan embarked on two additional years of study, this time in archaeology based at the Ecole Biblique in Jordanian East Jerusalem. His work led him to journey through many Middle-Eastern countries before escaping just days prior to the outbreak of the Six Day War of 1967.

  John Joseph Jones, known as Jack Jones (8 December 1873 – 21 November 1941), was a Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP).
  Born in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, Jones moved to London where he worked as a builders' labourer. He joined the Social Democratic Federation (SDF) and was elected to West Ham Council in 1904.
  In the 1906 general election, Jones unsuccessfully stood for Camborne. In 1911, he became a trade union organiser, for the National Union of General Workers.
  In the Poplar by-election, 1914, Jones stood unsuccessfully for the British Socialist Party (BSP) - the successor of the SDF. As a supporter of World War I, he joined the National Socialist Party split from the BSP, which soon affiliated to the Labour Party. In the 1918 general election, he stood against an official Labour candidate in Silvertown - the official candidate being an anti-war supporter of the Independent Labour Party. He became one of several National Socialist Party candidates elected, but the only one who stood for the party, rather than for the Labour Party. Despite this, he took the Labour Party whip in 1919.

  John Joseph Lee (born 9 July 1942) is an Irish historian and former senator. He is currently Professor of History and Glucksman Professor for Irish Studies and Director of Glucksman Ireland House, at New York University.
  Born in Tralee, Co Kerry, he spent his early years in Castlegregory in the same county.
  He graduated in 1962 from University College Dublin with first-class honours in History and Economics. He completed his MA some years later on the history of the railways in nineteenth-century Ireland. He was also a graduate student of Peterhouse, Cambridge.
  In 1973, he published The Modernisation of Irish Society, 1848-1918. The following year he moved back to Ireland to become Professor of Modern History at University College Cork, succeeding Oliver McDonagh. He held the chair until 2002.
  His 1989 Ireland 1912-1985 - Politics and Society won the Irish Independent/Irish Life Prize for History in 1991; and both the Aer Lingus/Irish Times Prize for Literature and the J.S. Donnelly, Snr. Prize for History and Social Sciences in 1992.

  Johnny Hayes
  John "Johnny" Joseph Hayes (April 10, 1886 – August 25, 1965) was an American athlete, a member of the Irish American Athletic Club, and winner of the marathon race at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Hayes' Olympic victory contributed to the early growth of long-distance running and marathoning in the United States.
  Born in New York City to a family of Irish emigrants (from Nenagh in Co. Tipperary), Johnny Hayes is probably best known for winning the controversial marathon race at the London Olympics. Hayes is one of only three male American athletes to win the Olympic Marathon, (the other two being Thomas Hicks in 1904 and Frank Shorter in 1972).
  In 1905 he had joined Bloomingdale Brothers as an assistant to the manager of the sporting goods department. At night he trained on a cinder track on the roof of the Bloomingdales building in New York. He was promoted to manager of the department after returning from his Olympic victory.
  Hayes started his athletics career with a fifth place finish at the 1906 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:38, running for the St. Bartholemew Athletic Club. He improved on that the following year by finishing third in Boston with a time of 2:30:38 and winning the inaugural Yonkers Marathon. In 1908 he finished second, 21 seconds behind Thomas Morrissey in the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:26:34 and thus qualified for the Olympic Games held in London that same year.

  Julian Gough (born in England in 1966) is an Irish novelist currently living in Berlin.
  His first novel, Juno & Juliet, was published in 2001 by Flamingo, almost a decade after Gough sung and wrote lyrics for the Irish 1980s cult group Toasted Heretic. His second novel, Jude: Level 1, was published in 2007 at Old Street Publishing, shortly after he won the BBC Short Story Award for the book's first chapter, titled "The Orphan and the Mob". In 2010, Salmon Poetry released Gough's first poetry collection, Free Sex Chocolate, which juxtaposes Gough's more recent forays into poetry with his earlier lyrics written for Toasted Heretic.
  
  Gough also writes columns and opinion pieces for various newspapers and magazines, including Guardian, Prospect Magazine and A Public Space.
  In 2007, he rebelled against the decision to award the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize to writer Will Self. Gough, who was nominated alongside Self, stole the prize, a pig, to keep for himself. In early 2010, Gough wrote an article on the state of Irish literature, "slamming fellow Irish novelists", on his personal website. Gough's novel Jude in London came third in the 2011 Guardian Not The Booker prize after the author threatened to share pictures of him "wearing only the [Not The Booker trophy] mug" shall he win the competition .

• Mary Redmond
  Mary Redmond (1863 to 16 January 1930) was an Irish sculptress born in Nenagh, County Tipperary in 1863, and then raised in Ardclough, County Kildare, where her father came to work in the limestone quarries.
  At school in Ardclough she showed talent in modelling the soft clay from a sinkhole near her home into clay figures. Her most famous work, a statue of Father Mathew in Dublin's O’Connell Street was inaugurated in 1893 (February 8). According to Nora J Ryder’s article in Capuchin Annual (1932) the male model for the Father Mathew statue took the concept of getting plastered a little too far, was dismissed for drunkenness and was later convicted for vandalising her work.
  Amongst her other works were a bust of Gladstone, modelled at his home; a bust of Dwyer Grey (of which thirty repeats were made) a presentation shield to Lord Wolseley and a memorial bust of William Martin.
  She moved to Italy and died in Florence on 16 January 1930.

  Matthew John “Matt” McGrath (December 18, 1875 – January 29, 1941) was a member of the Irish American Athletic Club, the New York Athletic Club, and the New York City Police Department. At the time of his death at age 65, he attained the rank of Inspector, and during his career received the NYPD's Medal of Valor twice. He competed for the U.S. team in the Olympics in 1908, 1912, 1920 and 1924 (at age 47). In his prime, he was known as "one of the world's greatest weight throwers."
  McGrath was born in Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland, and later immigrated to the United States. During his competitive years he stood 5′ 11½″ (1.82 m) tall and weighed 247 lb (112 kg), and was part of a group of large and dominant throwers referred to as the Irish Whales.
  He did not achieve success in the hammer throw until age 27, when he ranked seventh on the world list of best marks. He remained in the world’s top ten up to the age of 50, making his career one of the longest and most consistent in the history of the sport. He won seven AAU hammer throw championships, won seven more in the little-contested 56-pound weight throw, and set two hammer throw world records. His lifetime best throw was the second of those records, 187′ 4″ (57.10 m), made at New York’s Celtic Park on October 29, 1911.

  Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill (born 1952) is an Irish poet.
  Born in Lancashire, England in 1952, of Irish parents, she moved to Ireland at the age of 5, and was brought up in the Dingle Gaeltacht and in Nenagh, County Tipperary. Her uncle is Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta of An Daingean, the leading authority alive on Munster Irish. She studied English and Irish at UCC in 1969 and became part of the 'Innti' school of poets. In 1973, she married Turkish geologist Dogan Leflef and lived abroad in Turkey and Holland for seven years. Her mother brought her up to speak English, though she was an Irish speaker herself. Her father and his side of the family spoke very fluent Irish and used it every day, but her mother thought it would make life easier for Nuala if she spoke English instead.
  One year after her return to County Kerry in 1980, she published her first collection of poetry in Irish, An Dealg Droighin (1981), and became a member of Aosdána. Ní Dhomhnaill has published extensively and her works include poetry collections, children’s plays, screenplays, anthologies, articles, reviews and essays. Her other works include Féar Suaithinseach (1984); Feis (1991), and Cead Aighnis (2000). Ni Dhomhnaill's poems appear in English translation in the dual-language editions Rogha Dánta/Selected Poems (1986, 1988, 1990); The Astrakhan Cloak (1992), Pharaoh's Daughter (1990), The Water Horse (2002), and The Fifty Minute Mermaid (2007).   Patrick Donohoe
  Patrick Donohoe VC (Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland, 1820 – 16 August 1876) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
  He was approximately 37 years old and a private in the 9th Lancers, British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 28 September 1857, at Bolandshahr, India, for which he was awarded the VC:

  Patrick Sarsfield
  Patrick Sarsfield (ca. 1660 – 21 August 1693), created the first Earl of Lucan, Irish Jacobite and soldier, belonged to an Anglo-Norman family long settled in Ireland.
  Sarsfield was born in Lucan c. 1660. His father, Patrick Sarsfield, married Anne O'Moore, daughter of Rory (Roger) O'Moore, who organized the Irish Rebellion of 1641. The family was of Norman origin (by this time the origin was known as "Old English") and possessed an estate with an income of £2,000 a year. Patrick, who was a younger son, entered Dongan's Regiment of Foot on 6 February 1678.
  In his early years he is known to have challenged Lord Grey for a supposed reflection on the veracity of the Irish people (September 1681), and in the December of that year he was run through the body in a duel in which he engaged as second.
  In 1682-83 while in London, Sarsfield took part in two abductions of heiresses. In May 1682 he helped his friend Captain Robert Clifford to abduct Ann Siderlin, a wealthy widow, and was considered lucky not to be prosecuted. Then he abducted Elizabeth Herbert, the widowed daughter of Lord Chandos, on his own account. Elizabeth refused to marry him, but agreed not to prosecute him in exchange for her freedom.

  Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (born 25 December 1957) is an Irish musician and singer, best known as the original singer and songwriter of The Pogues.
  MacGowan was born in Pembury, Kent, England in 1957, to Irish parents. MacGowan spent his early childhood in Tipperary before his family moved back to England when he was six and a half. He lived in many parts of the south-east, including Brighton and London.
  MacGowan's mother, Therese, was a singer and traditional Irish dancer, and had worked as a model in Dublin. In 1971, after attending Holmewood House School at Langton Green, Tunbridge Wells, MacGowan earned a literature scholarship and was accepted into Westminster School, a renowned English public school close to the Houses of Parliament. He was found in possession of drugs and was expelled in his second year.
  MacGowan got his first taste of fame in 1976 at a concert by English punk band The Clash, when his earlobe was damaged by Jane Crockford, later to be a member of The Mo-dettes. A photographer snapped a picture of him covered in blood and it made the papers, with the headline "Cannibalism At Clash Gig". Shortly after this, he formed his own punk rock band, The Nipple Erectors, later renamed "The Nips".

  Tomás Mac Giolla
  Tomás Mac Giolla (25 January 1924 – 4 February 2010) was an Irish politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) and a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Workers' Party of Ireland.
  He was born Thomas Gill in Nenagh, County Tipperary. His uncle T. P. Gill was an Member of Parliament (MP) and member of the Irish Parliamentary Party of Charles Stewart Parnell. Tomás's father Robert also stood unsuccessfully for election on a number of occasions. His mother was Mary Hourigan.
  Mac Giolla was educated at the local national school in Nenagh before completing his secondary education at St. Flannan's College, Ennis, County Clare. It was while at St. Flannan's that he changed to using the Irish language version of his name. He won a scholarship to University College Dublin where he qualified with a Bachelor of Arts degree, followed by a degree in Commerce.
  A qualified accountant, Mac Giolla was employed by the Irish Electricity Supply Board from 1947 until he went into full time politics in 1977.

  Trevor Hogan (born 19 November 1979) was a professional rugby union player. He attended Nenagh CBS and Dublin City University, from which he obtained an honours degree in journalism. He played rugby with Nenagh Ormond, Dublin University and Blackrock College RFC before joining Shannon RFC in 2002 whom he has helped to victory in the All-Ireland League. He played for Munster until 2006, when he joined Leinster. He retired in January 2011 due to a knee injury
  Hogan made his first start for Munster in 2003, where he went on to win 57 caps, 5 in the Heineken Cup. He scored, however, only one try in his spell there. While at Munster, he won his first Irish cap in 2005 against Japan during the Lions Tour. He has since gone on to win 3 caps for the national side. He has since gone on to win 23 caps, including 7 Heineken cup caps, scoring 2 tries in the process. On January 12, 2011 he announced his immediate retirement from rugby at all levels. He cited that his decision was made due to persistent knee injuries over the last number of years.
