Baragoi
Baragoi is a market town in Kenya, lying north of Maralal and east of the Suguta Valley. It is part of the Samburu District. The entire Baragoi division has a population of nearly 20.000 (1999 census) comprising mostly people from the Samburu and Turkana tribes. [1]

Baringo District
Baringo District is an administrative district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kabarnet. The district has a population of 264,978 (1999 census) and an area of 8,646 km² [1].
The district is named after local Lake Baringo. It is an area of geothermal activity. Human fossils have also been found there.
Former Kenya president Daniel arap Moi lives in Baringo District. Some of Kenya's famous runners come from the district, most notably Paul Tergat. Tergat started the Baringo Half Marathon in the area in 2004, and it has been sponsored by Safaricom and featured athletes such as World Championship medallist Mubarak Hassan Shami.
The district has three constituencies: Baringo Central, Baringo East and Baringo North.

Bukoba
Bukoba is a town in northwest Tanzania on the western shore of Lake Victoria. It is the capital of the Kagera region. Population estimate: 100,000. The city is served by Bukoba Airport and regular ferry connections to Mwanza, as well as ground transport to Uganda's Rakai District.
Situated on the shore of Lake Victoria, Bukoba lies only 1 degree south of the Equator and is Tanzania's second largest port on the lake.
Bukoba town is situated at the Western shore of Lake Victoria in the northwest of Tanzania. The regional capital and Kagera's biggest town is the gateway to the region. The climate is sunny and mild most of the year. It can sometimes get cool especially in the evenings during the two rainy seasons, but never as cold as the winter season in Europe. Kagera's Regional Commissioner Col. Fabian Massawe resides and has his head office in Bukoba town.
The town is flat and compact, forming a bowl as it is surrounded by hills. The town has a bus stand, a small airport and a port with a ferry that travels from Bukoba via Kemondo bay port to Mwanza on Monday,Wednesday and Friday nights. Auric Air flies three times a day to Mwanza. In 2010 the airport is being extended and more flights are expected. A bus leaves for Kampala at 7 am every day (about 6 hours)and from Kampala for Bukoba at 11 am every day. It boasts a white sandy beach, a large market, a port, tennis courts and a swimming pool.It has 3 banks, two of which take VISA cards in the ATM.

Bungoma
Bungoma is a town in the Western Province of Kenya, bordered by Uganda in the west. Bungoma town was established as a trading centre in the early 20th century. The town is the headquarters of Kenya's Bungoma District and it hosts a municipal council. Bungoma municipality has an urban population of 44.196 and a total population of 60,650 (1999 census ).
The major economic activity in the area is farming and business supported by the Kenya-Uganda Railway which passes through the town. Nearby industrial centers are found at Nzoia and Webuye.
Major tertiary educational institutions include the Sang'alo Institute of Science and Technology, Mabanga Farmer's training centre, SACRED Africa and the SACRED Training Institute (both founded by Dr Juma Mukhwana) and Bungoma High school.
The mayor of Bungoma is Barasa Ndinga of Ford-Kenya, who beat the previous mayor Majimbo Okumu of ODM in the 2009 mayoral election, voted by the Bungoma councillors

Bungoma District
Bungoma District is a district in the Western Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Bungoma. It has a population of 876,491 and an area of 2,069 km².
The economy of Bungoma district is mainly agricultural, centering on the sugar cane and maize industries. The area experiences high rainfall throughout the year, and is home to several large rivers, which are used for small-scale irrigation.
The Bukusu who occupy much of the District are resilient and flamboyant people who stood up against British rule in the late 19th century. In a war that erupted at Lumboka and eventually ended at Chetambe near Webuye, the Bukusu bitterly resisted British rule. They are farmers who practice both livestock and crop farmers. And an early British traveler described them as such when he visited in 1876 "on the East of the Mountain, there are the Bukusu who are greater livestock breeders and keepers".
The Bukusu have produced many prominent people that have served in the Kenyan public life among them the late Hon Wamalwa Kijana (former vice president), the late Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga (head of the Catholic Church in Kenya), the late Elijah Masinde (founder of Dini ya Musambwa), Sudi Namachanja (chief during colonial days), Luka Namulala (community fore teller), among others. Among the women that have stood out include Dinah Khayota (former women leader), Justice Ruth Nekoye and lawyer Nancy Barasa among others.

Burundi
Burundi (pronounced /bəˈɹʊndɨ/), officially the Republic of Burundi (Kirundi: Republika y'u Burundi, [buˈɾundi]; French: République du Burundi, [byˈʁyndi]), is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The Twa, Tutsi, and Hutu peoples have occupied Burundi since the country's formation five centuries ago. Burundi was ruled as a kingdom by the Tutsi for over two hundred years. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Germany and Belgium occupied the region, and Burundi and Rwanda became a European colony known as Ruanda-Urundi.
Political unrest occurred throughout the region, in part, because of social differences between the Tutsi and Hutu, provoking civil war in Burundi throughout the middle twentieth century. Presently, Burundi is governed as a presidential representative democratic republic.

Cape Town

Cheltenham
Cheltenham (
/ˈtʃɛltnəm/), also known as Cheltenham Spa, is a large spa town and borough in Gloucestershire, England, located on the edge of the Cotswolds. It is the home of the flagship race of British steeplechase horse racing, the Gold Cup, the main event of the Cheltenham Festival held every March. The town was awarded a market charter in 1226, and has been a health and holiday resort since the discovery of mineral springs there in 1716. Horse racing began in Cheltenham in 1815, and became a major national attraction after the establishment of the Festival in 1902. On 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, the borough of Cheltenham was merged with Charlton Kings urban district to form the non-metropolitan district of Cheltenham. Four parishes — Swindon Village, Up Hatherley, Leckhampton and Prestbury — were added to the borough of Cheltenham from the borough of Tewkesbury in 1991.

Coast Province
Coast Province of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean, is one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi. It comprises the Indian Ocean coastal strip with the capital city at Mombasa and is inhabited by the Mijikenda and Swahili, among others. The province covers an area of 83,603 km² and has a population of 2,487,264 inhabitants (1999 census).
Other important towns on the coastal strip include Diani in the South, and Kilifi, Malindi, Watamu and Lamu in the North. Part of coastal population located in such popular resort and beach settlements as Kiongwe, Kipini, etc.
Diani Beach is now also a tourist center, with palm trees and the white sandy beaches like Mombasa.

Eldoret
Eldoret is a town in western Kenya and the administrative centre of Uasin Gishu District of Rift Valley Province. Lying south of the Cherangani Hills, the local elevation varies from about 2100 metres above sea level at the airport to more than 2700 metres in nearby areas (7000–9000 feet). The population was 193,830 in 1999 (census), and it is currently the fastest growing town in Kenya, and currently the 5th largest in Kenya.
The name "Eldoret" is based on the Maasai word "eldore" meaning "stony river" because the bed of the nearby Sosiani River is very stony. The white settlers decided to call it Eldoret to make it easier for them to pronounce it. At start of the colonial era, the area was occupied by the Nandi, before that by the Maasai and before that the Sirikwa.
In 1908, fifty eight families of Afrikaans-speaking South African settlers "trekked" to the Uashin Gishu plateau from Nakuru after a journey from South Africa by sea and by rail from Mombasa. They were followed by sixty more families in 1911 and more later. Eldoret was established in the midst of the farms they created.

Entebbe
Entebbe is a major town in Central Uganda. Located on a Lake Victoria peninsula, the town was at one time, the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda, prior to Independence in 1962. Entebbe is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, best known for the dramatic rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the resistance group of the PFLP and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda.
Entebbe sits on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. Entebbe lies at 00.04N, 32.465E. It is situated in Wakiso District, approximately 37 kilometres (23 mi), southwest of Kampala, Uganda's largest city and capital.
The Municipality is located on a peninsula into Lake Victoria covering a total area of 56.2 square kilometres (21.7 sq mi), out of which 20 square kilometres (7.7 sq mi) is water.
During the 2002 national census, Entebbe's population was estimated at 55,086 people. In 2008, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), estimated the population of the town at 70,200. In 2011, UBOS estimated the population of Entebbe at approximately 79,700.

Garissa
Garissa is a city in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. It is the capital of both the province and Garissa District.
Garissa is located at 0°27′25″S 39°39′30″E / 0.45694°S 39.65833°E / -0.45694; 39.65833 and has a population of 65,881 inhabitants (1999 census). The Tana River flows through the city.
Most of the town's inhabitants are ethnic Somalis and pastoralists. These are further sub-divided into clans, with the Ogaden sub-clan of the Somali Darod especially well-represented. There are also a small number of other minority ethnic groups, commonly referred to as corner tribes.
Garissa forms a municipality that has six wards. All of them belong to Dujis Constituency, which has a total of thirteen wards. The remaining seven are located within Garissa County Council, the rural council of Garissa District.
Garissa's landscape is mostly arid, desert terrain.The city lies along the Tana River, and has a very warm/hot climate due to the low elevation and distance away from the cooler coastal areas. The daytime temperature typically rises above 33°C (91°F), every day, but returns to a mild temperature, every night (see chart below).

Gucha District
Gucha District is a district in Nyanza Province, western Kenya. It is also known by the name: South Kisii District or Ogembo District. Its population is approximately 461,000 (as of 1999) [1]. Its district headquarters are at Ogembo which houses more than a thousand residents, (people who live in the center of the town), with more than one thousand people more that visit it each day. Agriculture is the main industry. Apart from numerous small family plantations, there are large sugar cane fields. The population is mostly Gusii, but the district borders Maasai land at southeast. There has been some ethnic clashes between them.
The district has three constituencies: South Mugirango, Bomachoge and Bobasi. At the 2002 General elections all three seats were won by FORD-People.

Homa Bay
Homa Bay is a bay and town on the south shore of Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, in western Kenya. It lies near Mount Homa (in the Luo language Got Uma or God Marahuma ["famous mountain"]) and Ruma National Park, the latter noted for Jackson's hartebeests and roan antelope (the government has also released reticulated giraffes into the park).
Homa Bay was once the District Headquarters for all of South Nyanza Province, but that has now been divided into at least three districts. Homa Bay is now capital of the Homa Bay District. Homa Bay hosts a municipal council. The municipality has an urban population of 32,174 and a total population of 55,532 (1999 census ).
Homa Bay municipality has six wards (Central, Kalanya, Kanyabala, Kanyadier/Kothidha, Katuma and Posta/Bonde). All of them belong to Rangwe Constituency, which has a total of fourteen wards. The remaining eight are located within Homa Bay County Council, the rural council of Homa Bay District.
Recent archaeological excavations in Kanjera South, located on the Homa Peninsula have yielded a combination of artefacts of the Oldowan culture and well preserved faunal remains in a sedimentary context that also allows for environmental reconstruction. The earlier findings by Louis Leakey and others include fragments of four anatomically modern humans associated with Pleistocene mammal fossils.

Ijara District
Ijara is an administrative district in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. On May 20, 2000, it was carved out from another and larger Garissa District. It covers an area of 11’332 km² and, according to the population census of 1999, has a population of 62,571 [1]. It borders Garissa District to the north, Lamu District to the south, Tana River District to the west, and Somalia to the northeast. The district has one local authority, Ijara county council, and one constituency, Ijara. The main economic livelihood of the inhabitants is pastoralism and subsistence agriculture. Over 80% of the land is earmarked for livestock production. There is potential for rain-fed agriculture but only a small proportion is utilized for commercial agriculture. Local communities settled in the district include the Awer hunter-gatherers and the pastoral Somali Abdalla.
Approximately one quarter of the district is covered by the Boni Forest, which is an indigenous open canopy forest and part of Northern Zanzibar-Inhambane coastal forest mosaic [3]. A section of the forest, the Boni National Reserve, is managed by the Kenyan Wildlife Service as a protected conservation area. Other forest types are found along the Tana River on the western border of the district.The district is also pivotal in the conservation of the critically endangered Hirola population. A number of initiatives and conservancies have been established to that purpose, including the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy.

Isiolo
Isiolo is a town in the Eastern Province, Kenya. It is situated in the Upper Eastern sub-region, and lies 285 kilometres north of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. The town grew around the local military camps, much of the population being descended from former Somali soldiers who had fought in World War I as well as other Cushitic-speaking pastoral communities and the Ameru community. The predominant population of Isiolo are the Oromo-speaking Boran and Sakuye and the Bantu Ameru.In recent years there has been a steady migration from the neighbouring communities such Mandera, Wajir and samburu, The most populous Division is merti in the northern flank of the district.Isiolo town is the Headquarters of the district and the gateway to the northern half of the country. The town has an estimated population of 80,000 people, most of them living in the rural outbacks of the District. There is an increasing urban population in the recent years, especially from as far as Moyale, Marsabit and mandera. The Isiolo town is also becoming a centre of interest because of the of its newly acquired status as a resort city cashing in on the popular Samburu and Shaba Game reserves and the Meru National Park, which have become preferred destinations after the famed Maasai Mara. Isiolo lies along the long A2 Road, leading towards Marsabit and Moyale much farther north. The town is served by Isiolo Airport, which is set to be upgraded to serve tourism and local exports.

Isiolo District

Kajiado
Kajiado is a town in the Rift Valley Province, Kenya. The town is located south of Nairobi, along the Nairobi – Arusha highway. Kajiado has an urban population of 8128 (1999 census) [1]. Local people are predominantly of the Maasai tribe.
Kajiado is headquarters to the Kajiado District.
The name "Kajiado" comes from the word "Orkejuado." Which means "The Long River" in Maasai language. The seasonal river named after the town runs west of the town.
The original name for Kajiado was "Olopurupurana", which means "a round elevation."
Kajiado has a station on the Magadi Soda Railway line which runs from Konza (on the Mombasa line) to Magadi. however this line operates limited passenger services, the most convenient way to travel to kajiado from Nairobi is by using a matatu. the matatu stage is located near jack n jill supermarket

Kakamega
Kakamega is a town in western Kenya lying about 30 km north of the Equator. It is the headquarters of kakamega county. The town has a population of 73,607 (1999 census). Kakamega is 52 km north of Kisumu, the third largest city in Kenya and a port city on Lake Victoria. The average elevation of Kakamega is 1,535 metres.
Kakamega county is Kenya's second most populous county after Nairobi. The county has 9 constituencies in total namely Butere, Mumias, Matungu, Khwisero, Shinyalu, Lurambi, ikolomani, Lugari and malava.
Local Inhabitants are mostly the Luhya tribe, whose economic activity is mainly farming and fishing.
Kakamega serves as the headquarters of Kenya's largest sugar producing firm, Mumias Sugar, located in the village of Mumias.
Kakamega was the scene of the Kakamega gold rush in the early 1930s, fueled partly by the reports of the geologist Albert Ernest Kitson.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is a new institution of higher learning created by an act of parliament in December 2006 which is in the heart of Kakamega town on the Kakamega-Webuye road. It is expected to spur growth in this capital of Western Province.

Kampala
Kampala is the largest city and capital of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division and Lubaga Division. The city is coterminous with Kampala District.
Mutesa I, the Kabaka (king) of Buganda, had chosen the area that was to become Kampala as one of his favorite hunting grounds. The area was made up of hills and wetlands. It was an ideal breeding ground for various game, particularly a species of antelope, the impala (Aepyceros melampus).
The city grew as the capital of the Buganda kingdom, from which several buildings survive, including the Kasubi Tombs (built in 1881), the Lubiri Palace, the Buganda Parliament and the Buganda Court of Justice. Severely damaged in the Uganda-Tanzania War, the city has since then been rebuilt with constructions of new buildings including hotels, banks, shopping malls, educational institutions, hospitals and improvement of war torn buildings and infrastructure. Traditionally, Kampala was a city of seven hills, but over time it has come to have a lot more.

Kapenguria
Kapenguria is a town lying north east of Kitale on the A1 road in Kenya. Kapenguria is capital of the West Pokot District. Kapenguria forms a municipality with an urban population of 13,000 and a total population of 56,000 (1999 census ).
Kapenguria municipality has seven wards (Chemwochoi, Kaibos, Kapenguria, Keringet/Psigirio, Kisiaunet, Siyoi and Talau). All of them belong to Kapenguria Constituency, which has a total of 23 wards, the remaining 15 are located within other local authorities .
Lying near the Saiwa Swamp National Park, Kapenguria is home to a museum in the prison where Jomo Kenyatta was incarcerated in 1953 for his alleged role in the Mau Mau Rebellion.
It is the home of Tegla Loroupe, world-record-holder in the marathon, half-marathon, 20,000-meter, 15,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. She holds annual Peace Race races here, to bring peace among the eight tribes in the West Pokot area.
This is the location of the Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy, founded to provide education for orphans from the tribal wars.

Keiyo District
Keiyo District (also known as Elgeyo district or Elgeiyo) is an administrative district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The district was formed in 1994, when Elgeyo/Marakwet-District was split into two, the other half is Marakwet District of today. Keiyo District has a population of 143.865 [1]. Its capital is located in the Iten/Tambach town.
Local people are mostly of the Keiyo Tribe. Some famous Kenyan runners come from the district, including Saif Saaeed Shaheen (born Stephen Cherono) and Vivian Cheruiyot. The area is used by local and foreign athletes for high-altitude training.

Kericho
Kericho is a Kenyan County located to the South West of the country and lies within the highlands west of The Kenyan Rift Valley. The capital of the district is Kericho town. The district home to the best of Kenyan Tea which is world famous for its brightness, attractive color, brisk flavor and textures of fragrant leaves. Kericho is home to Kenya's biggest water catchment area, the Mau Forest. Kiambu District
Kiambu District is an administrative district in the Central Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kiambu. The district is adjacent to the northern border of Nairobi and has a population of 744,010.
The district is predominantly rural, but its urban population is increasing as Nairobi is growing rapidly. Kikuyu are the dominant tribe in the district.

Kilifi
Kilifi is a town on the Kenyan coast, home to many resorts. It sits on the estuary of the Rare River in Kenya. The beach itself is known as Bofa Beach and is said to be one of the best beaches in Kenya. The town lies on the Kilifi Creek between Malindi and Mombasa. Kilifi is capital of the Kilifi District. The town has an urban population of 30,394 (1999 census [1]).
The town is known for its beach and for the ruins of Mnarani, including mosques and tombs, dating from the 14th to the 17th century.

The towns sits on both sides of the estuary and are linked by the Kilifi Bridge. One side is called Mnarani and the other is the main Kilifi Town. Kilifi bridge gives you access to the splendid view of the estuary.
The weather is generally warmer throughout the year (above 25 degrees) with two seasons of moderate rainfall (about 800-1000mm). The long rains that start around March to July and the short rains that start around October to December.

Kisumu
Kisumu is a port city in western Kenya at 1,131 m (3,711 ft), with a population of 355,024 (1999 census). It is the third largest city in Kenya, the principal city of western Kenya, the immediate former capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu County. It has a municipal charter but no city charter. It is the largest city in Nyanza region and second most important city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin.
The port was founded in 1901 as the main inland terminal of the Uganda Railway and named Port Florence. Although trade stagnated in the 1980s and 1990s, it is again growing around oil exports.
Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade "sumo". The city has "Friendship" status with Cheltenham, UK and "sister city" status with Roanoke, Virginia and Boulder, Colorado, USA.
Kisumu was identified by the British explorers in early 1898 as an alternative railway terminus and port for the Uganda railway, then under construction. It was to replace Port Victoria, then an important centre on the caravan trade route, near the delta of River Nzoia. Kisumu was ideally located on the shores of Lake Victoria at the cusp of the Winam Gulf, at the end of the caravan trail from Pemba, Mombasa, Malindi and had the potential for connection to the whole of the Lake region by steamers. In July 1899, the first skeleton plan for Kisumu was prepared. This included landing places and wharves along the northern lake shore, near the present day Airport Road. Demarcations for Government buildings and retail shops were also included in the plan.

Kit Mikayi
Kit-Mikayi (also spelled Kit Mikayi, Kitmikayi, and Kitmikaye) is a rock formation, a tor, around 40 m high situated about 29 km west of the town of Kisumu in western Kenya. It is about 1 km from the Kisumu-Bondo road. The sign board is on the gate of Kit Mikayi primary school and entrance is via N’gop-Ngeso primary school.
Kit-mikayi means "the stone of the first woman", or "stone of the first wife", in Dholuo, the Luo language.
The legend behind Kit Mikayi, which in Luo dialect means "the stone of the first wife", is that: Long time ago, there was an old man by the name Ngeso who was in great love with the stone. Every day when he woke up in the morning, he could walk into the cave inside the stone and stay there the whole day, and this could force his wife to bring him breakfast and lunch everyday. The old man became passionately in love with this stone to the extent that when people asked his wife his whereabouts, she would answer that he has gone to his first wife (Mikayi) hence the stone of the first wife (Kit Mikayi).[citation needed]

Kitale
Kitale is an agricultural town in western Kenya situated between Mount Elgon and the Cherengani Hills at an elevation of around 7,000 feet (2,100 m). Its urban population was estimated at 220,000 in 2007.
It is the administrative centre of the Trans-Nzoia District, in the Rift Valley Province. The main cash crops grown in the area are sunflower, tea, coffee, Pyrethrum, seed beans and seed maize. Kitale is a market town for the local agricultural area and is known for the Kitale Museum and an agroforestry centre. Saiwa Swamp National Park lies near the town.
The town was founded in 1908 by white settlers. A branch line of the Uganda Railway from Eldoret reached Kitale in 1926 which promoted growth of the town. Kitale is among the most diverse towns in the country.
The National Museum of Western Kenya is located at Kitale. It is a natural history museum and was originally created by Lt Col. Hugh Stonehouse in 1926.

Kitui
Kitui is a town in Kenya, 130 kilometers east of Nairobi and 75 kilometers east of Machakos. It used to be the capital of the Kitui District in Eastern Province of Kenya. Due to political reforms, Kitui is now the headquarters of Kitui County, which covers a larger area than the former district did. As a consequent the city has become a natural meeting point for politicians and businessmen. And most of the hotels are therefore expanding. In addition, people have noticed that Kitui town is suitable for a pit-stop or a sleep on the way from Mt. Kenya to Mombasa.
Kitui town had a population of 13,244 in 1999, but has grown substantially since this. According to the local Non-Governmental Organization KICABA, there are now about 60,000 living in the city, whereas 1,000,000 if you include the outskirts. A large majority of the residents belong to the Kamba, a Bantu people. The Kamba of Kenya speak the Bantu Kamba language (Kikamba) as a mother tongue, and are considered as friendly and welcoming people.

There are some private secondary schools in the area, however, there are no technical centers of higher learning (known to this editor) in Kitui District. recently kenyatta university has established a campus(kitui) campus in the town
The vast majority of the economy is based on sustenance farming, despite the fact that the agriculture is an extremely challenging endeavor giving the sporadic rainfall. A logical move therefore would be a transition to non-agricultural industries.

Kuria District
Kuria District is an administrative district in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kehancha (sometimes spelled as Kihancha). The district has a population of 256,086 (2009 census) and an area of 581 km². It is inhabited by Kuria people.

Kwale District
Kwale District is an administrative district in the Coast Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kwale, although Msambweni and Ukunda are larger.

Laikipia District
Laikipia District is one of the seventy-one districts of Kenya, located on the Equator in the Rift Valley Province of the country. The district has two major urban centres: Nanyuki to the southeast, and Nyahururu to the southwest. Its capital is Nanyuki.
The Kikuyu form about 60% of the population, with the balance composed of several other ethnic communities, including Laikipia Maasai, Samburu, Meru, Borana, Kalenjin, Somali, European, Asian, and Turkana, giving the district a diverse population. Most of the land is owned by a small population of old Kenyan settler families, and increasingly non-Kenyan wealthy landowners and international organizations..

Lamu
Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya.
Lamu town is also the headquarters of Lamu District and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lamu Town on Lamu Island is Kenya's oldest continually inhabited town, and was one of the original Swahili settlements along coastal East Africa.
There are some other accounts that mention Chinese ships of Zheng He's fleet sinking near Lamu Island in Kenya in 1415. Survivors settled on the island and married local women. This has been proven recently by archaeological work on the island that has resulted in the finding of evidence to suggest this connection. Further DNA testing done on some residents show that they indeed have Chinese ancestors.
The town was first attested in writing by an Arab traveller Abu-al-Mahasini who met a Judge from Lamu visiting Mecca in 1441.
The town's history was marked by a Portuguese invasion in 1506, and then Omani domination from around 1813 (the year of the Battle of Shela). The Portuguese invasion was prompted by the nation's successful mission to control trade along the coast of the Indian Ocean. For considerable time, Portugal had a monopoly on shipping along the East African coast and imposed export taxes on pre-existing local channels of commerce. In the 1580s, prompted by Turkish raids, Lamu led a rebellion against the Portuguese. In 1652, Oman assisted Lamu to resist Portuguese control. Lamu's years as an Omani protectorate mark the town's golden age. During this period, Lamu became a center of poetry, politics, arts and crafts as well as the trade.

Limuru
Limuru is a town in central Kenya. It is also the name of a parliamentary constituency and an administrative division. Current 2004 population is about 4800.
Limuru is a town located on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley about 30 miles North-West from Nairobi the capital city of Kenya. Limuru residents rely mostly on farming and a shoe factory for employment. Early in the British colonial period (from the 1890s) Europeans settled in the area due to its proximity to Nairobi, the railway, its fertile land and pleasant weather.
The native language of most people in Limuru is Kikuyu, with Swahili and English widely spoken.
Limuru serves as the capital of Kiambu West District which was formerly part of Kiambu District. In addition, it is also the name of a parliament constituency.
Most of the area of Limuru is now what was previously known as "the white highlands", a rich agricultural land just south of the equator. The term "white highlands" derived from the British and other Europeans who realised the productive potential of this area and settled in large numbers with the support of the colonial government, establishing coffee and tea plantations, cereal farms and ranches. Altitude of the town is about 2500 meters. Limuru has a temperature of 28 °C (75 °F) year round.

Lodwar
Lodwar is the largest town in northwestern Kenya, located west of Lake Turkana on the A1 road. Its main industries are basket weaving and tourism. The Loima Hills lie to its west. Lodwar is the capital of Turkana District. The town has a population of 17,000.
According to the Insider’s guide to Kenya Lodwar’s history began around 1933 when a trader named Shah Mohamed, arrived on the banks of the Turkwell River. The roads were inaccessible so he brought the donkeys. He eventually built a permanent trading centre in Lodwar including a gas station. The district commissioner’s office was built followed by a small medical clinic and a government prison. Police headquarters were built in Lokitaung as the tribal disputes were common in the area. During the 1960s, missionaries built schools in and around the town. Shah Mohamed opened several stores in the remote towns of this Turkana district because he was the only contractor and supplier to government departments, carried mail to the area, supplied and transported the goods for the Norwegian and Italian fish-canning projects on Lake Turkana (both projects eventually failed).

Loiyangalani

Loiyangalani is a small town located on the southeastern coast of Lake Turkana in Kenya. The town has 1000 inhabitants (1999 census)[1]. Loiyangalani means "a place of many trees" in the native Samburu tongue. It is home to Turkana people and was founded near a freshwater spring in the 1960s where the El Molo people live. Its main industries include fishing, tourism and gold panning. It is a popular tourist destination in Northern Kenya, as the surrounding El Molo and Turkana villages offer unique (although somewhat commercialized) experiences.
In June 2008, the 1st Cultural Festival took place at Loiyangalani and united all tribes of the Lake in celebration for one weekend.
The town is home to an airstrip and lies near Mount Kulal (50 km), known for its forest and stones. There are two Lodges in the area, the "Mosaretu Women's Groupe Lodge" and the "Oasis Lodge" which are both located only a few hundred meters from the airstrip.

Lokichogio
Lokichogio, also Lokichoggio or Lokichokio, is a town in the Turkana District, northwest of Kenya (4°12′00″N 34°21′00″E / 4.2°N 34.35°E / 4.2; 34.35). It is often called Loki. The town lies on the A1 road, and is served by the Lokichogio Airport.
It is about 30 kilometers from the international border with South Sudan and is host to UN offices (part of the Operation Lifeline Sudan program), around 49 NGOs, and a large hospital run by the ICRC.
Local peoples are mainly nomads of the Turkana tribe and derive their livelihood by looking after indigenous cattle. Ninety kilometers south of Loki is Kakuma, one of the largest refugee camps in Kenya. Refugees from Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, the DRC, and several other surrounding countries can be found in Kakuma.
Loki is the outermost Kenyan town on the border with Sudan. Kenyans from the southern part of Loki, however, maintain that Lodwar is the last truly "Kenyan" town in the region, about 200 kilometers south. At the north end of Loki, beyond the noted dry river bed, the Kenyan military has set up a border checkpoint. This is considered the "true" border between Kenya and Sudan. Beyond this point lies a road leading to Nadapal, the Sudanese checkpoint which is about thirty kilometers away. The area known as "no-man's land" is situated between these two checkpoints.

Machakos
Machakos is a town in Kenya, 64 kilometres southeast of Nairobi. It is the capital of the Machakos District in Eastern Province of Kenya. Machakos Town is a major rural centre, and also a satellite town due to its proximity to Nairobi. Its population is rapidly growing and is 192,117 (as of 2009) (this estimation is probably too high, see Discussion). People who live here are mostly the Akambas though it is a cosmopolitan town. Machakos is surrounded by hilly terrain, with a high number of family farms.
Machakos was established in 1887, ten years before Nairobi. Machakos was the first administrative centre for the British colony, but they moved the capital of Kenya to Nairobi in 1899 since Machakos by-passed the Uganda Railway that was under construction. Town and the district were named after Masaku, an Akamba chief.
Sudan-related peace talks were held in Machakos, resulting in the Machakos Protocol on July 20, 2002.

Malindi
Malindi (once known as Melinde) is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 120 kilometres northeast of Mombasa. The population of Malindi is 117,735 (in 1999 census). It is the capital of the Malindi District.
Tourism is the major industry in Malindi. The city is exceptionally popular among Italian tourists. Malindi is served with a domestic airport and a highway between Mombasa and Lamu. Malindi has been a Swahili settlement since the 14th century. Once rivaled only by Mombasa for dominance in this part of East Africa, Malindi has traditionally been a port city for foreign powers. In 1414, the town was visited by the fleet of the Chinese explorer Zheng He. Malindi's ruler sent a personal envoy with a giraffe as a present to China on that fleet.

Malindi District

Mandera
Mandera is a town in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. It is located at around 3°55′N 41°50′E / 3.917°N 41.833°E / 3.917; 41.833, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia.
Mandera is the capital of the Mandera District.
As a whole, it used to constitute one district, which was divided into three smaller constituencies; namely, Mandera East, Mandera Central and Mandera Wes. Mandera's climate is categorized as arid under the Koppen climate classification. Temperatures tend to be hot throughout the year. Daily temperatures are typically above 30 °C (86 °F), while at night, they can fall to 20 °C (68 °F). Precipitation is extremely low, with the area receiving very minimal amount of rain. Droughts are not unusual, often resulting in significant loss of livestock in rural areas where pastoralism is common.

Maralal
Maralal is a small hillside market town in northern Kenya, lying east of the Loroghi Plateau within the Samburu District. It is the administrative headquarters of the Samburu people. The town has an urban population of 16,281 (1999 census [1]). The market was pioneered by some Somali settlers in the 1920s.
Nearby is the Maralal Game Sanctuary. Maralal is also home to Kenyatta House, the location where Jomo Kenyatta was detained prior to his release. The town also serves as a base for tourist activities such as bush walking, whitewater rafting and camel riding. It is also known for camel racing and is surrounded by the Maralal National Sanctuary. Marsabit
Marsabit is a town in northern Kenya, located 170 km east of the center of the East African Rift at 37°58' E, 2°19' N (37.97°E, 2.32 N). It is located in the Eastern Province and is almost surrounded by the Marsabit National Park and Reserve. It serves as the capital of Marsabit District, and lies southeast of the Chalbi Desert in a forested area known for its volcanoes and crater lakes.
The town of Marsabit is an outpost of urban civilization in the vast desert of northern Kenya. The town is situated on an isolated extinct volcano, Mount Marsabit, which rises almost a kilometer above the desert. The hills here are heavily forested, in contrast to the desert beyond, with their own "insular" eco-system.
The town is inhabited by the Nilotic Samburu and Turkana, as well as the Cushitic-speaking Gabbra, Burji, Borana and Rendille. It is also home to some Somali and Ameru traders and migrants.
In addition, Marsabit has an airstrip and a mountain peak (Mount Marsabit), with "singing" wells just outside the town. Elephants can also often be seen in the local wildlife refuge that surrounds the town, occasionally breaking down fences and causing damage to local farmers crop beds.

Mbeere District
Mbeere District is an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Siakago. The district has a population of 170,950 and an area of 2,093 km². The district was split from Embu District in 1996. The natives here speak kimbeere language. The district hosts the famous seven folks dams, which include: Masinga dam, Kamburu dam, Gitaru dam, Kindaruma dam and Kiambere dam. The dams are a part of Tana River. Other local places of interest include the Mwea National Reserve, and Kiangombe mountain, which peaked at 1804 metres stands out compared to adjacent topography, although is not as spectacular as the Mount Kenya located less than 100 kilometres northwest.
The dorminant crops found there include fruits like Mangoes, melons, pawpaws and passion fruits. the farmers in this area grow maize, beans, cowpeas, pigeon peas, black peas-njavi, others like millet are seasonally grown there.
Mbeere district has also come to be known with Miraa, 2nd largest producer after Meru. The miraa crop is commonly grown in the Northern part of the district.

Trading in this commodity is a boom, this is particularly seen in the sale of banana leaves by the vendors to miraa traders to cover up the havest from drying.

Mombasa

Mount Elgon District
Mount Elgon District (Mt. Elgon District) is an administrative district in the Western Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kapsokwony.

Over the decades, other ethnicities moved into the Chebyuk settlement, which complicated the land situation.

Moyale
Moyale is a market town on the border of Ethiopia and Kenya, which is split between the two countries: the larger portion is in Ethiopia (in the Oromia Region), and the smaller is in Kenya (the capital of the Moyale District). There are four disputed locations within the Moyale district between the Somali and Oromo regions.[citation needed]
Moyale is the main border post on the Nairobi-Addis Ababa road, lying north of the Dide Galgalu Desert. It is known for its traditional architecture.
An early settler at Moyale was a Greek by the name of Zaphiro, who had a station which he had named "Fort Harrington". When C.W. Gwynn visited in 1908, Zaphiro's station consisted of a garden that covered several acres and his house, located on a spur projecting from the Boran highlands, and providing access through the line of cliffs that run along the border. "This route may well become some day a considerable trade artery," Gwynn predicted. "Fort Harrington is therefore well placed as a healthy administrative post and as a possible commercial centre."

Mumias
Mumias is a town in the Western Province of Kenya. The town has an urban population of 32.965 (1999 census) [1] Mumias is the center of the Mumias Division of the Butere/Mumias District. The town is linked by road to Kakamega (in east), Busia (west), Bungoma (north), Butere (south). The village of Buchinga is located between Mumias and Kakamega.
Mumias Sugar Company is a major employer. It also owned the Mumias Sugar FC, which was one of the top football teams in Kenya until it was disbanded in 2007.
Five minutes outside Mumias town, on the road to Kakamega, there is a hospital called St. Mary's Hospital. It is run by the Catholic Church.
The town is capital of the Luhya kingdom of Wanga. King Mumia, who came to power in 1880, was the last sovereign king of Wanga. He was succeeded by his son Shitawa who ruled after his death in 1949 till the late seventies. He then was succeeded by Mumia II who is currently in power. His role remains largely non executive, but the royal family draws taxes from the trade that goes on in the county council of Mumias, which is to date still regarded as the seat of power. This includes taxes from the Mumias Sugar Company. The family still owns the land in the county although bits and pieces have been sold off to private developers. The entire Royal Family is still very closely linked to the choices of political leaders in the region as well as to their royal ties of the Abashitsetse clan. Each family has its own meetings (families keep the family tree with major families arising from the last sovereign Wanga government, with the brothers of King Mumia forming the Patriarchal Heads of the family). One other very noticeable family is the Kadima family. Mumias has a noticeable Muslim community, unique in western Kenya. It derives from trade links between Wanga state and coastal Kenya.

Muranga District
Murang'a (sometimes misspelled as Muranga) is one of the districts of Kenya's Central Province. Its capital town is also now named Murang'a but was called Fort Hall in colonial times (before 1963). It is inhabited mainly by and is considered the home of the Kikuyu, the largest community in Kenya. The district has a population of 942,581 (2009 census). Many have traveled to Murang'a to enjoy the lush folage. On the road to the Post Office the road forks leading travelor to take the road to Neri and beyond or the road to the Murang'a Technical College. As the travelor walks along the road, an old English pub sits along the road on the right. Over the course of several years Murang'a became the site for placement of a Peace Corps Volunteer (www.peacecorps.gov). It's peaceful beauty allow the travelor to wonder through it lush green folage.
When missionaries first came to Kenya, they were prevented from settling on the coast by the Portuguese, who had taken the coastal area, strategic for trade, from Arab powers in the 16th century. The missionaries were forced to venture into Kenya's rugged interior, and Murang'a was one of the first places they settled.

Mwanza
Mwanza is a mid-sized port city on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania. With an urban population of 1.2 million and a metropolitan population of 2 million, it is Tanzania's second largest city, following Dar es Salaam and ahead of other major Tanzanian cities of Arusha, Mbeya and Tanga. Later on the Lake Province was divided into the Lake Province and the Western Zone. After independence, all the provinces were turned into official regions. Nairobi

Naivasha
Naivasha is a market town in Rift Valley Province, Kenya, lying north west of Nairobi. It is located on the shore of Lake Naivasha and along the Nairobi - Nakuru highway and Uganda Railway.

A resort in Naivasha was the location for much of the negotiations of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement ending the Second Sudanese Civil War, commonly known as the "Naivasha Agreement".

Nakuru
Nakuru, the provincial capital of Kenya's Rift Valley province, with roughly 300,000 inhabitants, and currently the fourth largest urban centre in the country, lies about 1850 m above sea level. It is also the capital of Nakuru District.
The history of Nakuru [1] can perhaps[citation needed] be traced to the prehistoric period due to the archeological discoveries located about 8 km from the Central Business District at the Hyrax Hill reserve. Nakuru is Kenya's 3rd largest residency, larger even than the smallest of the three cities, Kisumu. However, the modern town, as with many others in Kenya, derives its name from the Maasai speaking people of Kenya. Nakuru was established by the British as part of the White highlands during the colonial era and it has continued growing into a cosmopolitan town. It received township status in 1904 and became a municipality in 1952.
The history of Kenya as a country is closely intertwined with that of Nakuru as a town and a district. The first and second presidents of Kenya maintained their semi-official residents within the town, Jomo Kenyatta, and Daniel arap Moi. The town for a long time has been the hotbed of Kenyan politics and it was home to a variety of colorful politicians including the late Kariuki Chotara, Kihika Kimani and the late Mirugi Kariuki.

Nakuru District
Nakuru District is a district in the Rift Valley Province, Kenya. The district capital is Nakuru. With a population of 1,187,039 (1999 census), it is the second largest district in Kenya after Nairobi. Nakuru District has an area of 7,242 km².
Nakuru is an agriculturally oriented area and is home to Lake Nakuru (est. 1961), one of the Rift Valley soda lakes. Lake Nakuru is best known for its thousands, sometimes millions of flamingoes nesting along the shores. The surface of the shallow lake is often hardly recognizable due to the continually shifting mass of pink. The number of flamingoes on the lake varies with water and food conditions and the best vantage point is from Baboon cliff. Also of interest, an area of 188 km around the lake fenced off as a sanctuary to protect Rothschild giraffe and black rhinos.
Other sites of interest around Nakuru include Menengai Crater, an extinct volcano 2,490m (8,167 ft) high. The views of the crater itself, as well as the surrounding countryside, are spectacular.

Namanga
Namanga is a town in Kenya, lying on the border with Tanzania. It is in Kajiado District, Rift Valley Province. It is around 130 kilometers from Arusha, Tanzania. Nandi District is famous for producing many Kenyan runners, including Kipchoge Keino, Henry Rono, Moses Tanui and Bernard Lagat. In 2010 a group of athletes in Nandi Hills came together to form the tourism social enterprise Nandi Runners which hosts visiting athletes and funds community development in Nandi District [2].

Nanyuki
Nanyuki is a market town in central-east Rift Valley region of Kenya lying northwest of Mount Kenya along the A2 road and at the terminus of the branch railway from Nairobi. It is situated just north of the Equator (0° 01' North). It was founded in 1907 by British settlers, some of whose descendants still live in and around the town. Nanyuki is currently the main airbase of the Kenya Air Force. The British Army also keeps a base at The Nanyuki Show Ground (NSG) from where it conducts yearly desert and jungle training exercises on the mountain and in the arid areas to the north. Nanyuki is the capital of Laikipia County. In addition to a town hall, therefore, it also houses the county headquarters.
The town was started by British settlers during in the early days of colonial Kenya in 1907. Some of their descendants still live in or around the town. The town is today multi-cultural and is the market center for farms, ranches, game parks and wildlife conservancies in the region. It's also the base for people seeking to climb Mount Kenya, the most famous landmark in the country. The Equator line passes 6.5 km (4 mi) south of this town.

Narok
Narok (sometimes referred to as Narok Town) is a town west of Nairobi that supports Kenya's economy in south-west of the country, along the Great Rift Valley. Narok is the district capital of the Narok County and stands as the major centre of commerce in the district. Narok has a population of around 40,000 people, mostly Maasai. The Maasai, natives of Narok district, refer to Narok as Enkare Narok (meaning black water or dark water) named after, Enkare Narok, the river flowing through Narok town.[citation needed] The elevation of Narok is 1827 metres (5,997 feet) in altitude.
Narok Town is the last major town when travelling by road from Nairobi to Maasai Mara National Park and Keekorok Lodge. The Narok town stands as a center for services, business, and finance. For decades, Narok's economy was controlled by Asian and non-Maasai communities.
Narok Town has several public and parochial schools. These include the following primary schools: Masikonde Primary School, Ole Sankale Boarding School, St. Mary's Primary School, St. Peter's Primary. Also, the following secondary schools: Narok Boys' High School, Maasai Girls' High School, Ole Tipis Secondary School and St Mary's Secondary School. Narok also has a Bible college, Bisset Bible College, and the newly upgraded Narok University, which was previously a teachers' college. Currently the town has embarked on structural and economic growth as the roads and new beautiful building and modern branded shops are mushrooming each day. The common Narok Stadium has been deteriorating due to neglect, hence need to corporate bodies to chip in and bring back the Narok glory.

Ndere Island
Ndere Island is a small island (4.2 km2 or 1.6 sq mi) in Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria in Kenya. It was gazetted as the Ndere Island National Reserve in November 1986 and has since that time been uninhabited.
Ndere means "meeting place" in Dholuo. According to Luo folklore, early tribal migrants rested up near Ndere after their long journey south up the Nile River Valley. They found the lush shoreline so pleasing that they stayed.
Notable fauna associated with the island include African fish eagles, swifts, hippopotamus, and Nile crocodiles. About fifty impalas have been introduced to the island.

Nyahururu
Nyahururu is a town in Kenya, lying east of Nakuru. It is part of Laikipia District in Rift Valley Province. Despite this, Nyahururu formerly functioned as the administrative capital of Nyandarua District, one of seven districts that constitute Central Province in Kenya, until the headquarters was shifted to Ol Kalou. There have been calls for a reversal[dead link]. The town has an urban population of 24,751[dead link].
Nyahururu was founded as Thomson Falls after the 70 metre high Thomson's Falls on the nearby Ewaso Nyiro River, which drains from the Aberdare mountain ranges. It is on the Junction of Nyeri-Rumuruti road and the Nyeri-Nakuru road. The town grew around a railway from Gilgil opened in 1929 (now effectively abandoned). The town was once an important player in the timber milling industry, and the now defunct National Pencil Company had a factory there. It is also an important milk processing hub.
Egerton University's Laikipia campus is on the outskirts of Nyahururu town. With high quality education offered by private schools, most children from this area have gone on to lead successful lives.

Nyandarua District

Nyanza Province
Nyanza Province of Kenya, is one of Kenya's eight administrative provinces. It is located in the southwest part of Kenya around Lake Victoria. Nyanza includes part of the eastern edge of Lake Victoria and is inhabited predominantly by the Luo. Nyeri
Nyeri (officially known as Nyeri Municipality) is a town in situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya, which was the administrative headquarters of the country's former Central Province. Following the dissolution of the former provinces by Kenya's new constitution in 2010, Nyeri is now the largest town in the newly created Nyeri County.
The town is situated about 150 km (a two hour drive) north of Kenya's capital Nairobi, in the country's densely populated and fertile Central Highlands, lying between the eastern base of the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range, which forms part of the eastern end of the Great Rift Valley, and the western slopes of Mount Kenya.

Port Bell
Port Bell is a small industrial centre in the greater metropolitan Kampala area, in Uganda. Port Bell has a rail link and a rail/road ferry wharf used for International traffic across Lake Victoria to Tanzania and Kenya.
It is located at the end of a narrow inlet of Lake Victoria, approximately 7 miles (11 km), by road, southeast of the central business district of Kampala. The coordinates of Port Bell are:00 17 24N, 32 39 15E (Latitude:0.2900; Longitude:32.6540).
The port is named after Sir Hesketh Bell, a British commissioner, who took over administration of Britain's interests in Uganda in 1906. Its rail link is a branch line from the Kampala-Jinja main line.
Lake Victoria ferries operate from Port Bell linking Kampala to other railhead ports on Lake Victoria including Jinja, Kisumu and Mwanza. The Port Bell ferry wharf is visible on high-resolution Google Earth photos at latitude 0.2885° longitude 32.653°. A ferry is shown loading truck and rail coaches while another waits.
When the first stage of the Uganda Railway was completed in 1901, the railhead was at Kisumu, 12 hours journey from Port Bell by ship. Ferries brought goods by lake between Port Bell and Kisumu. It was not until 1931 that a branch line of the railway from Nakuru reached Kampala and then Port Bell.

Rift Valley Province
Rift Valley Province of Kenya, bordering Uganda, is one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi. Rift Valley Province is the largest and one of the most economically important provinces in Kenya. It is dominated by the Kenya Rift Valley which passes through it and gives the province its name. According to the 1999 Census, the province covers an area of 173,854 square kilometres (42,960,000 acres; 67,125 sq mi) and has a population of 8,786,300 inhabitants (2007),[citation needed] making it the largest and most populous province in the country. The capital is the town of Nakuru.
The Great Rift Valley runs south through Kenya from Lake Turkana in the north and has several unique geographical features, including the Elgeyo escarpment which is a popular tourist attraction.

Ruiru
Ruiru is a town in the Kiambu County of Kenya’s Central Province. Located within three kilometers of Nairobi's city boundary, Ruiru is a dormitory town for the nation's capital, and is connected by both rail and road. The town covers an area of 292 km², and is surrounded by numerous coffee plantations.
In 1999, Ruiru had a population of 100,000, but has undergone rapid population growth in response to shortage of available housing in Nairobi. A 2005 estimate put the population at over 220,000 [1]. The town has struggled to adapt to the influx of people. Ruiru town is also an industrial town with several major factories including Devki Steel Mills, Spinners & Spinners Garment Factory, Ruiru Feeds, etc. It is well served by banks and shopping malls and currently is enjoying some housing boom as many coffee estates are converted into residential areas including an upcoming multi-billion Tatu Estate. ICT businesses are also emerging including SmartEdge PASHA center a digital village by the KICT board where the community can buy computers and get free computer training.

Rwanda

Samburu District

Siaya District
Siaya District is one of the twelve districts that make up Nyanza Province in the southwest part of Kenya. It is bordered by Busia District to the North, Vihiga and Butere/Mumias Districts to the North-East, Bondo District to the South, and Kisumu District to the South-East. The total area of the district is approximately 1520 km². The District lies between latitude 0° 26’ to 0° 18’ north and longitude 33° 58’ east and 34° 33’ west. Tana River District
Tana River District is a district of Coast Province, Kenya. It is named after the Tana River itself. It has an area of 38,446 square kilometres (14,844 sq mi) and a population of 180,901 according to the 1999 census. The district capital is Hola (sometimes known as Galole).
The major ethnic groups are the Pokomo, many of whom are farmers, and the Orma and Wardey, who are predominantly nomadic. The district is generally dry and prone to drought. Rainfall is erratic, with rainy seasons in March–May and October–December. Conflicts have occurred between farmers and nomadic peoples over access to water. Flooding is also a regular problem, caused by heavy rainfall in upstream areas of the Tana River.
Tana River district presents an interesting case of the nexus between conflict and food security. A recent survey prepared by ALMRP, Tana River District and presented to the Tana River District Steering Group (2004) found that the district is 79% food insecure and with an incidence of poverty at 62% (Interim Poverty Strategy Paper (I-PSP), 2000–2003, Kenya). Tana River district comprises several areas of forest, woodland and grassland which are minor centres of endemism. The forests are designated National Reserve status if they have >4 plant endemics and >7 vertebrate endemics (IUCN, 2003). Despite the apparent adequate natural resources, the region remains marginalised from the rest of the country. Efforts at development always seem to centre around the huge River Tana, despite massive failures in all the previous irrigation projects in the district, i.e. Bura, Hola and the Tana delta rice irrigation project which failed after the water works were damaged by the el nino rains in 1998.

Tharaka District
Tharaka District is one of the seventy-one districts of Kenya located in that country's Eastern Province. The district has an area of 1570 km² and a population of 365,330 (2009 census) In 1998, it was split from the Tharaka-Nithi District , itself formerly part of the larger Meru District.
Tharaka District is the home of the Ameru (Meru) tribe, which is related to other Bantu tribes living around the Mount Kenya region: the Kikuyu and the Embu people. The Ameru are generally called "Bantu" people who have been native to the Mt. Kenya area for many, many years — well before colonization of Kenya by Britain in the 19th Century. The people of Tharaka District are now predominantly Christian — Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and other denominations, reflecting the work of missionaries — with also minorities of Indian descent, who are mainly Hindus, and African/Arab descent, who are Muslims. Tharaka also has some resident Europeans predominantly British in ancestry. tharaka itself one of the several sub-tribes of greater Meru tribe. they have some different tribal and clan systems and rituals that are not common in the other sub-tribes. the tharaka are farmers but also rely a lot on pastoralism; the rearing of cattle, goats, sheep and also poultry. the tharaka are very proud people and have risen from being sidelined by other meru sub-tribes and command a number of professionals and government officials.

Thika
Thika (pronounced [ˈθika]) is an industrial town in Central Province, Kenya, lying on the A2 road 40 km north east of Nairobi, near the confluence of Thika River & Chania River. Thika has a population of 200,000 and is growing rapidly, as is the entire greater Nairobi area. The elevation of Thika is approximately 1631 meters in altitude.
Thika is home to the Chania Falls,14 falls on river Athi and the Thika Falls, while Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park lies to its south east. The town has a railway station, but currently there is only limited passenger service with only cargo trains operating although there are plans to extend the proposed light rail system to Thika in the future. The town is currently the headquarters of Thika West district following the split of the larger Thika district (created in 1994) into five districts; Thika East and Thika West, Ruiru, Gatundu, Gatanga. It is also the seat of the South Central regional commissioner (deputy Provincial Commissioner) for Central Province appointed by president Mwai Kibaki in 2009 who is in-charge of the larger Kiambu, Thika and Murang'a districts. However, under Kenya's new constitution which has recognizes only the 47 districts in existence before 1992 as semi-autonomus counties, Thika falls under Kiambu County. Although, Kiambu Town is expected to be the new county headquarters, Thika should remain as the main commercial center.

Turkana District
Turkana District is an administrative district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Turkana is the northwesternmost district in Kenya. It is bordered by the countries of Uganda to the west; South Sudan and Ethiopia, including the disputed Ilemi Triangle, to the north and northeast; and Lake Turkana to the east. Uasin Gishu District

In 1908, fifty eight families of Afrikaans-speaking South Africans settlers "trekked" to the Uashin Gishu plateau from Nakuru after a journey from South Africa by sea and by rail from Mombasa. They were followed by sixty more families in 1911 and more later. The town of Eldoret was established in the midst of the farms they created.
There is a large population of immigrants from England, Scotland, South Africa and Zimbabwe, who have come to settle and farm.
In 1903 Theodor Herzl negotiated with British officials to obtain land for a permanent Jewish settlement. The British government eventually offered up the Uasin Gishu plateau, which at the time was part of British East Africa. The British plan for Jewish settlement in this area was eventually aborted.

Voi
Voi is the largest town in Taita Taveta County in southern Kenya, lying on the edge of the Tsavo East National Park. It lies at the junction of the railway lines from Nairobi to Mombasa and Taveta. The Voi Sisal Estates are located near the town. Voi is located near the villages of Ikanga and Mkwachunyi.
Voi's town centre consists of mostly general stores, shops, markets, kiosks and few hotels. Most lodges are located in the suburbs or on the edge of the small town. Voi is also home to a railway station.
Voi is located in Taita-Taveta County, in the former Coast Province. It recently became a district.
According to local history the name of town comes from a slave trader called Chief Kivoi who settled near the Voi river about 400 hundred years ago. There after the town grew as a trade post between the local Taita people, other Kenyan tribes and Arabs.
The town started to grow at the end of the 19th century when the Uganda Railway was constructed. People started to move in to work on the railway and the nearby sisal estates.

Wajir
Wajir is a town in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. It is the capital of Wajir County.
A cluster of cairns near Wajir are generally ascribed by the local inhabitants to the Madanle, a semi-legendary people of high stature, who are associated with the Somali Ajuuraan. A. T. Curle has reported the excavation of two of these large tumuli, finding traces of skeletal remains which crumbled at his touch, as well as earthenware shards and a copper ring.
Wajir is located in an arid area prone to drought. It sits at a latitude and longitude of 01°45′00″N 40°03′00″E / 1.75°N 40.05°E / 1.75; 40.05. (Latitude:1.75000; Longitude:40.05000). The town is served by Wajir Airport, with flights to Nairobi, Galkacyo and Mogadishu.
As with other areas in the North Eastern Province, Wajir is mainly inhabited by Somalis, most belonging to the Degodia and Murale sub-clan of the Hawiye, Ogaden of the Darood and Ajuran. The 1999 census reported a total population of 32,207 inhabitants.
Wajir county has several secondary schools, six of which are located in Wajir East district. Some of the academic institutions include Wajir High School, Wajir Girls High, Griftu High, Hon. Khalif, Eldas High, Bute High, Hadado, Habaswein High, Furaha Mixed Day School, Waberi Mixed Day Secondary School and Sabunley Secondary School.

Webuye
Webuye is an industrial town in Bungoma East District, Bungoma county in the Western Province of Kenya. Located on the main road to Uganda, the town is home to the Pan African Paper Mills, the largest paper factory in the region, as well as a number of heavy-chemical and sugar manufacturers. West Pokot District

Winam Gulf is a significant extension of northeastern Lake Victoria into western Kenya.

Wundanyi

Dunga
Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri (born October 31, 1963 in Ijuí, Rio Grande do Sul), commonly known as Dunga (pronounced Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈdũɡɐ]), is a former Brazilian football defensive midfielder and a World Champion for Brazil in the 1994 World Cup. Dunga coached the national team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was dismissed by the Brazilian Football Confederation following the team's elimination in the quarter finals.

Kisumu is a port city in western Kenya at 1,131 m (3,711 ft), with a population of 355,024 (1999 census). It is the third largest city in Kenya, the principal city of western Kenya, the immediate former capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu County. It has a municipal charter but no city charter. It is the largest city in Nyanza region and second most important city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin.
The port was founded in 1901 as the main inland terminal of the Uganda Railway and named Port Florence. Although trade stagnated in the 1980s and 1990s, it is again growing around oil exports.
Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade "sumo". The city has "Friendship" status with Cheltenham, UK and "sister city" status with Roanoke, Virginia and Boulder, Colorado, USA.

History[link]
Kisumu was identified by the British explorers in early 1898 as an alternative railway terminus and port for the Uganda railway, then under construction. It was to replace Port Victoria, then an important centre on the caravan trade route, near the delta of River Nzoia. Kisumu was ideally located on the shores of Lake Victoria at the cusp of the Winam Gulf, at the end of the caravan trail from Pemba, Mombasa, Malindi and had the potential for connection to the whole of the Lake region by steamers. In July 1899, the first skeleton plan for Kisumu was prepared. This included landing places and wharves along the northern lake shore, near the present day Airport Road. Demarcations for Government buildings and retail shops were also included in the plan.[2]
Another plan was later prepared in May, 1900, when plots were allocated to a few European firms as well as to Indian traders who had travelled to Kisumu on contracts to build the Uganda Railway and had decided to settle at the expanding terminus. The plan included a flying boat jetty (now used by the Fisheries Department). In October 1900, the 62-ton ship Sir William Mackinnon,1st Baronet, built and registered in Kisumu, made its maiden voyage to Entebbe, marking the beginning of the Lake Marine Services. The Winfred and the Sybil were later added to the fleet in 1902 and 1904, respectively. On Friday, December 20, 1901, the railway line reached the Kisumu pier, with the centre adopting a new name, Port Florence.
By February, the railway line had been opened for goods and passenger transportation. Kisumu was also privileged to host the first flight in East and Central Africa; the current police workshop was the first hangar in Kenya and entire East Africa. Before the jet airline era, the city was a landing point on the British flying boat passenger and mail route from Southampton to Cape Town. Kisumu also linked Port Bell to Nairobi.[3]
In the meantime, it was realised that the site originally chosen for the township north of the Nyanza Gulf was unsuitable for the town's expansion, due to its flat topography and poor soils. An alternative site was therefore identified and the town's location moved to the ridge on the southern shore of the Gulf, where the town sits today. Consequently, another plan was prepared in 1902, which provided the basic layout of the new town on the southern ridge. This was followed by the construction of a number of Government buildings, notably the former Provincial Commissioner's Office (now State Lodge) and the Old Prison (now earmarked for the construction of an Anglican Cathedral).[4]
In 1903, the township boundaries were gazetted and some 12,000 acres, including water, set aside for its development. The new township reverted to its original name, Kisumu, in substitution of Port Florence. At this time, there was an ‘Old Kisumu', that consisted of two rows of Stalls (Dukas) on Mumias Road, north of the Gulf. It was later demolished in the twenties when new plots became available on Odera and Ogada Streets in the present day Kisumu, hence the new area acquired the name ‘New Bazaar'.
By the 1930's and 40's, the city had become a leading East African centre for Commerce, Administrative and Military installations. In the 1960’s the population of Asians in relation to Locals was significantly higher. The town was elevated to the status of a Municipal Board in 1940 and later to a Municipal Council in 1960. In the early sixties, very little development took place in Kisumu, with an acute shortage realized in dwelling houses, shops and offices. The situation was later made worse by the influx of locals into the town following the declaration of independence in 1963.[5]
The city’s growth and prosperity slowed down temporarily in 1977, as a result of the collapse of the East African Community. However, the city spurred with the reformation of the community in 1996 and with its designation as a "city." The port has been stimulated by the transformation of international business and trade, as well as the shipments of goods destined for Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Currently, Kisumu is one of the fastest growing cities in Kenya. It is thriving with rich sugar and rice irrigation industries, whose contribution to the National economy is immense due to its natural resources and as the epicentre for business in East Africa.

Attractions in the city include Kibuye Market, the Kisumu Museum, an impala sanctuary, a bird sanctuary, Hippo Point, and the nearby Kit Mikaye and Ndere Island National Park.
Kisumu Museum[link]
Kisumu Museum, established in 1980, has a series of outdoor pavilions. Some of the pavilions contain live animals. For example, one pavilion contains numerous aquaria with a wide variety of fish from Lake Victoria, along with explanatory posters. Another pavilion contains terrarium containing mambas, spitting cobras, puff adders and other venomous Kenyan snakes. Additionally, out of doors, the museum has a few additional exhibits, including a snake pit and a crocodile container.
Other pavilions show weaponry, jewellery, farm tools and other artifacts made by the various peoples of the Nyanza Province. Additionally, there are exhibits of stuffed animals, birds and fish. One pavilion houses the prehistoric TARA rock art, which was removed for its own protection to the museum after it was defaced by graffiti in its original location.
The museum's most important and largest exhibition is the UNESCO-sponsored Ber-gi-dala. This is a full-scale recreation of a traditional Luo homestead. Ber-gi-dala consists of the home, granaries and livestock corrals of an imaginary Luo man as well as the homes of each of his three wives, and his eldest son. Through signs and taped programs in both Luo and English, the exhibition also explains the origins of the Luo people, their migration to western Kenya, traditional healing plants, and the process of establishing a new home.
Kisumu Impala Sanctuary[link]
Kisumu is the location of the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary. Measuring just 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), the sanctuary is one of Kenya's smallest wildlife preserves. As its name suggests, it is home to a herd of impala. Some hippos, as well as many reptiles and birds are also present. Additionally, several caged baboons and leopards who faced difficulties of one sort or the other in the wild are held in cages there. Over 115 different species of birds live there.
Hippo Point[link]
Hippo Point is a 600 acres (240 ha) viewing area on Lake Victoria. Despite its name, it is better known as a viewing point for its unobstructed sunsets over the lake than for its occasional hippos.
Hippo point is near the village of Dunga, a few kilometres SW of the town. The village also has a fishing port and a camping site.
Kit Mikayi[link]
Kit Mikayi, a large rock with three rocks on top, and is located off Kisumu Bondo Road towards Bondo. Kit-mikayi means “Stones of the first wife” or “First Wife Rocks” in Dholuo, the Luo language. It is a weeping rock; it is believed that Mikayi (literally, "the first wife") went up the hill to the stones when her husband took a second wife, and has been weeping ever since.
It has become a popular local pilgrimage site for adherents of the Legio Maria sect who come to the rock to pray and fast for several weeks at a time.
Imperial Hotel[link]
Imperial Hotel is a 4 star Hotel in the heart of Kisumu. Along Jomo Kenyatta Highway, this Landmark has been watching over Kisumu's CBD since 1985.
Transport[link]
Before the jet airline era, Kisumu was a landing point on the British flying boat passenger and mail route from Southampton to Cape Town. Kisumu linked Port Bell and Nairobi.
Kisumu is served by Kisumu Airport, with regular daily flights to Nairobi and elsewhere. Plans to expand the airport in anticipation of increased trade brought about by the recreated East African Community of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are already in high gear with works expected to be complete within the next decade.
Lake Victoria ferries have operated from the port linking the railway to Mwanza and Bukoba in Tanzania, and to Entebbe, Port Bell, and Jinja in Uganda.
President Kibaki launched a Ksh. 6.8 billion road project for a major overhaul of Kisumu's road network on July 24, 2009.[6]
Rail and air accidents[link]
Douglas C-47 plane operated by South African Air Force crashed into Lake Victoria soon after taking off from Kisumu Airport on July 11, 1945. All 28 on board died.[7]
Two serious railway accidents occurred near Kisumu in the 2000s.
The first took place outside Kisumu on August 15, 2000. The brakes on the train failed, causing it to roll. Thirteen people were killed and 37 received injuries. The second took place on the morning of October 16, 2005, when a matatu (taxi minibus) was struck by a passenger train. Six people died and 23 more were injured. After that there have been accidents in its major towns with notable black spots: Ojola/Kisian, Kisat bridge, Ahero, Sondu, Awasi just but to mention a few.
