Various of FARC guerrillas walking STORYLINE: A senior leftist Colombian rebel freed by President Alvaro Uribe travelled to Cuba on Monday where peace facilitators hope he'll re-establish contact with his former guerrilla commanders and revive a prisoner exchange plan to free some 60 hostages, including three American military contractors. Rodrigo Granda, known as the foreign minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, told The Associated Press on Saturday he was travelling to Cuba for medical tests and rest after more than two years in jail. Accompanying him on his journey was Dario Echeverry, a peace facilitator for the Roman Catholic church. "The logistic elements are not our business, but I can tell you he (referring to Rodrigo Granda) took a charter flight to his final destination," said Rodolfo Palomino, Director of Bogota's police. "From the very first moment he (referring to Rodrigo Granda) leaves the Episcopate to the airport to take his flight he is being accompanied and escorted by the police," added Palomino. The so called "foreign minister" of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia didn't make any comments before leaving for the airport. Uribe released Granda from jail on June 4 at the request of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who hopes the senior rebel can mediate the release of another prominent hostage, former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, a dual French-Colombian citizen. Betancourt, her campaign manager, Clara Rojas, three US defence contractors and dozens of other hostages are being held by the FARC.
