1/10/13: The Trail Blazers are a perfect 5-0 in overtime this season, with the latest extra session game coming against Orlando on Monday night. Portland was led by LaMarcus Aldridge's 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Wesley Mathews chipped in another 24 points. On top of that, J.J. Hickson added 20 points and 15 rebounds while Nicolas Batum dropped 16 points and 10 assists. The Trail Blazers trailed late in the game, but finally triumphed 124-119 over the Magic, who lost their ninth consecutive game, and are clearly not the same team without Glen "Big Baby" Davis.

1/3/13: Rookie point guard Damian Lillard continues to dominate the rookie awards. After winning the Rookie of the Month award for October/November, he continued the run by adding the award for December. Lillard leads all rookies in scoring with 18.4 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. He is third among point guards with 16 game of 20 or more points. Lillard's play has helped turn the Trail Blazers from lottery team (which is how they acquired Lillard) to over .500. Like the rest of the Northwest division, Portland is well behind the Thunder, but the rest of the division is up for grabs.

12/27/12: Point guard Damian Lillard proclaimed himself the best point guard in the draft last summer, and so far his play is backing up his words. He actually may win Rookie of the Year honors. In a ROY showdown against Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Hornts (soon to be Pelicans, Krewe, or something else), Lillard scored 16 points and had four assists, and even knocked down a game winning three pointer to give the Trail Blazers a 95-94 victory. Comparatively, Davis scored 15 points and had five rebounds. Portland is 13-13, a strong improvement over last season.

12/6/12: So far, so good. Portland is looking pretty smart these days for selecting Damian Lillard in the Lottery over the summer. Lillard leads all rookies in scoring (18.4 points per game), assists (5.9 per game) and steals (1.8 per game). He is also the first rookie to score at least 20 points in his first three games since Grant Hill in 1994 - not even LeBron James did that. The league recognized his efforts and awarded him the Rookie of the Month Award for November (in the West). Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of the Bobcats won the award in the Eastern Conference.

11/29/12: Portland is muddling along just under .500, (6-8 on the year) just as many predicted. While the team is much improved over last season - thanks primarily to the addition of rookie point guard Damian Lillard - the Trail Blazers still have plenty of room to improve. Portland dropped a heart breaker to the Pistons 108-101, but has a chance to change their forturne with a trip to Washington to play the winless Wizards. That game is followed by one in Boston, then Cleveland, Charlotte, and Indiana while the team is on an early season East Coast swing.

11/22/12: While the Suns were matching up and playing like it was the Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson days, the Trail Blazers were playing the Suns as if it were the Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson days. The Suns simply out played and out-coached Portland, as the Trail Blazers fell 114-97. Portland is stuck in a log jam in the Northwest Division, as Denver, Utah, Minnesota, themselves are all between 6-5 and 5-6. It looks to be a race to second place, and no one has the inside track yet. One thing is for sure, Portland will not be in the running if they continue to play like the did against the Suns.

11/1/12: Through three weeks of the NBA season, rookie point guard Damian Lillard has shown to be the best of the rookie class. Much of that may be due to the importance of his role as point guard - especially for a team that lacks the stars and talent of elite NBA franchises. So the question Trail Blazer fans will hear all season is if Lillard is a legitimate star or a just a good player on a bad team. Its too soon to answer that question, but with over 18 points and 7 assists per game, it looks like he may be a star.

11/8/12: It looks like the Trail Blazers got it right when they selected Damian Lillard with the seventh pick in the draft. He seems to be the franchise point guard the team (or any team) needs by showing off both his shooting and rebounding skills. In his first three games, Lillard scored over twenty points and had at least seven assists in each effort. He is the second player in NBA history to ever do that. The first? Legendary Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. True, it is too soon to enshrine Lillard yet, but his initial introduction to the NBA has been nothing short of outstanding.

11/1/12: Portland is looking to become the next Oklahoma City - a bottom dwelling team that drafted well and filled in role players efficiently to become annual contenders. Like OKC, Portland is not high on the destination list of many top-tier players. Additionally, the draft picks of Brandon Roy and Greg Oden did not work out due to injuries. But now the team has a young and energetic core that could begin to turn the tide Rip City. Rookie point guard Damien Lillard is at the center of the transformation and may well end up being the Rookie of the Year.

10/18/12: Everyone in Portland agrees that the 2011-12 season did not exist. In fact, they may just change the record books to say "2011-12: No Season Played". But the team is rebuilt. Terry Stotts is the new head coach. They still have all-star LaMarcus Aldridge and the best point guard in the draft class, Damien Lillard. Without Nate McMillan, the Trail Blazers will be able to run an uptempo offense and keep defenses offbalanced and tired. There are no promises of a postseason here, but at least they should be able to keep the 2012-13 records for the future.

10/4/12: Portland finished at 28-38 last season, and many people think they could make a run at a playoff spot this time around. Most of the focus is on LeMarcus Aldridge and what he must do (read: raise his game) for this team to succeed. Aldridge has built a nice start to his NBA career, which many miss because he plays in Portland. But he is among the best young players (only 27), and is starting to learn team defense. Should Aldridge improve as many expect, then there may be some excitement back in the Rose City this year. If not, the line for tee times starts on the right.

8/16/12: John Wall is now the longest tenured player for the Wizards. That would not be an extraordinary piece of trivia except that Wall was drafted only two years ago in 2010. Wall earned this honor when the Wiz used the amnesty clause to rid themselves of Andray Blatche, who was a second round pick in 2005. Washington has made many personel missteps over the years, affording them the opportunity to secure good tee times in May on a regular basis. But even for a team that once selected Kwame Brown first overall, this is remarkably high turnover. The Wizards need stability, and the new roster looks as strong as any in recent memory.

8/2/12: Damian Lillard proclaimed himself the best point guard in the June Draft, and is now showing it on the court. Though he is from tiny Weber State, Lillard was the #6 overall pick, and may be the most important piece to Portland's rebuilding process. He is considered a 'can't miss' prospect who can run the floor and shoot, and is expected to start for the Trail Blazers once the season is underway. He stole the show in the Las Vegas Summer League, and shared MVP honors with Memphis guard Josh Selby. With summer work finished, it is only a few months before we see if Lillard can continue on in the big leagues.

7/26/12: In a a curious move, Portland matched a 4 year, $46.5 million dollar offer sheet by the Timberwolves for restricted free agent Nicolas Batum. Minnesota presented Batum the offer sheet after several attempts to trade for him were shot down by Portland. One offer reportedly included three future first round picks and SF Derrick Williams. The Trail Blazers tried to extend Batum last year with a $5 million per year deal, but Batum declined. All of this seems to be a overpriced and outlandish for a guy who averaged 14 ppg last summer and clearly does not want to be in Portland any more.

5/23/12: Reports out of Oregon indicate that former #1 overall pick Greg Oden has undergone a controversial procedure to revive his career. The Trail Blazers passed on Kevin Durant five years ago to take Oden, who has been plagued by major injuries since college. Kevin Durant, in the meantime, has gone on to become one of the best and most popular players in the league. Thereby continuing a sad tradition of the franchise of wasting premiere draft choices (see: Michael Jordan). Portland now hopes to secure another top pick in the upcoming lottery, and this time (finally) pick that franchise player they so dearly need.

5/15/12: Despite rampant rumors, owner (and Microsoft co-founder) Paul Allen insists that the team is not for sale. Allen went so far as to write an open letter to fans describing his current intentions, the search for a new/permanent general manager, and his hiring goals in the near term. Allen also said that the past season was the most disappointing in his 24 years as an owner, particularly after a 7-2 start. The Trail Blazers have loads of cap-space and two high draft picks, and LaMarcus Aldridge came into his own (earning his first All-Star appearance) so a quick turnaround is very possible.

5/11/12: As Portland licks its wounds and develops its draft and free agent strategy for the offseason, the team must define its real needs. Lamarcus Aldridge was terrific all year, finishing 8th in scoring at 21.7 points per game and 25th in rebounding with 8 per game. But Aldridge needs players around him. Restricted free agents Nicolas Batum and J.J. Hickson will likely return, but neither addresses the Trailblazers most glaring weakness, a cener. Portland waived former number one oveall pick Greg Oden, who has never been healthy, and the team lacks a true interior presence to draw double teams and grab rebounds.

5/3/12: The Portland Trail Blazers ended the season on a very low note, losing seven in a row and nine of their their last 10 games to finish 28-38 on the season. The Trail Blazers made the playoffs the previous three seasons, getting eliminated in the first round each time. The team and fans were optimistic about making the second round this season, but failure to meet expectations led to the March firing of head coach Nate McMillan after almost seven years at the helm. The team must decide their intentions on restricted free agents Nate Batuma and J.J. Hickson soon as well.

4/25/12: Portland was utterly routed 124-89 by the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, giving rise to speculation that the Trail Blazers are tanking the season to improve their lottery draft odds. The Spurs locked up the number one seed in the West, and have the luxury of resting starters in their final week. Portland is playing short-handed and has not made any moves to fortify their bench as the season winds down - the first time they will miss the playoffs in four years. Portland wrapped up their season with a 96-94 loss to Utah, finishing the 2011-12 campaign at 28-38.

4/18/12: With the team eliminated from going to the postseason, it would be easy to tank the remainder of the season. Despite losing their last three games to Dallas, Sacramento, and Phoenix, respectively, the Trail Blazers continue to compete. Dallas edged Portland 97-94 on Friday, and Sacramento survived on Sunday only because of a winning jumpshot with 3.4 seconds remaining by Marcus Thorton. The heavy schedule took a toll the following night, as Phoenix overwhelmed Portland 125-107. Portland has four games remaining, at home versus Utah, then finishing with three on the road against Memphis, San Antonio, and Utah again.
