France fighter jets pound rebels in northern Mali
French warplanes have bombed Islamist rebel strongholds in northern Mali, as UN-approved west African troops prepare to join the operation. Fighter jets have pounded Timbuktu and Gao in Northern Mali, the region that was captured by al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremists in April 2012. France became directly involved in the conflict after saying that the spread of the al-Qaeda-linked groups in northern Mali posed a security threat to Europe. As well as its fighter jets based in France and Chad, some 550 French troops are currently in the towns of Bamako and Mopti. France's foreign minister Laurent Fabius has insisted that without direct intervention the Islamist could have advanced as far as the capital Bamako, and that the military would only be operating in the country for "a matter of weeks". So far more than 100 militant had been killed, and since the start of the French intervention on Friday, at least 11 Malian soldiers and a French helicopter pilot have died. African nations Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin are all sending in troops in a bid to win back the north. The UK is providing two C17 transport planes towards the French effort. French fighter jets bombed targets in central Mali Saturday and were continuing strikes aimed at rebel strongholds on Sunday, Malian Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Diarran Kone said. Sunday's raids were the latest in a French operation to help the Malian government stop advances by militant Islamist forces. France has sent several hundred troops to join the fight and plans more raids on Monday, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told Radio Europe 1. "We have to eradicate this terrorism," he said Sunday. Islamist rebels in Mali acknowledged Sunday that they had suffered heavy losses in a battle against the country's military and French troops. "This is a holy war. The deaths are normal," said Sanda Ould Boumama, spokesman for the rebel group Ansar Dine, which is linked to al Qaeda. "Our fighters are prepared to die for our cause," he told CNN by phone. One of the group's lieutenants, Iyad Ag Ghaly, was killed in the fight over the central town of Konna, security sources said.

French FIGHTER JETS continue AIR-STRIKES against AL-QAEDA linked ISLAMISTS in Mali [TROOPS READY]
French fighter jets have bombed Islamist rebels in central Mali for a third day on Sunday after claims the insurgents were just days away from seizing the capital Bamako. The continuous air-strikes were being carried out around three towns. Forces also recaptured Konna, a strategically located central town, a day after it was seized by Islamist rebels. Interior Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told French radio: "There are raids happening at the moment, there will be more this afternoon and tomorrow. The determination of the French President is absolute: we must eradicate this terrorism that could threaten the security of Mali, the security of our country (France) and of Europe." Last April, al Qaeda-linked militants snatched control of the north of the country and have recently pushed south. Paris deployed more than 500 troops to help prevent rebels advancing further. Meanwhile hundreds of people have come forward to give blood to help injured Malian solders, after a request from the president. At one centre in Bamako alone, medical staff collected more than 1000 pouches in one day. Mali's West African neighbours are expected to deploy troops to support government and French forces over the next few days.

French Fighter Jets Bombard Mali
French fighter jets bombed rebel targets in a major city in Mali's north Sunday, pounding the airport as well as training camps, warehouses and buildings used by the al-Qaida-linked Islamists controlling the area, officials and residents said. Now in its third-day, the French-led effort to take back Mali's north from the extremists began with airstrikes by combat helicopters in the small town of Konna. It has grown to a co-ordinated attack by state-of-the-art fighter jets which have bombarded at least five towns, of which Gao, which was attacked Sunday afternoon, is the largest. More than 400 French troops have been deployed to the country in the all-out effort to win back the territory from the well-armed rebels, who seized control of an area larger than France nine months ago. What began as a French offensive has now grown to include seven other countries, including logistical support from the US and Europe. The United States is providing communications and transport help, while Britain is sending C17 aircrafts to help Mali's allies transport troops to the frontlines. French President Francois Hollande authorized the intervention after it became clear the swiftly advancing rebels could break Mali's military defences in Mopti, the first town on the government-controlled side, located in the centre of this African country. The move catapulted the world into a fight that diplomats had earlier said would not take place until at least September. "French fighter jets have ...

Mali crisis : militants killed as French fighter jet pounds
Islamist militants are fleeing major towns in northern Mali after two days of air strikes by French troops, which sources say have left scores of rebels dead. French fighter jets have pounded insurgent training camps, arms and oil depots as the French defence ministry confirmed reports of Islamist deaths, together with at least 11 civilians including three children. "Mali is now at the mercy of the French army. They are bombing the north, they have killed many terrorists," said a well-connected Malian official in Bamako. "The Islamists have been running into the desert -- they have deserted Gao and Timbuktu." Residents in Gao confirmed French jets had struck the airport as well as the building that served as the base for the town's feared Islamic police. "The planes are so fast you can only hear their sound in the sky," Soumaila Maiga told Reuters. "We are happy, even though it is frightening. Soon we will be delivered."

French air strikes in Mali
France widened its military intervention in the African nation of Mali today beyond targets in the center of the country, sending fighter jets to the north to hammer training camps, infrastructure, and logistics depots used by Islamist rebels with ties to Al Qaeda. French President Francois Hollande, who has been struggling on the domestic front and whose ratings have hit record lows, said the intervention had stopped the rebels' advance, but stressed that France's mission was not over. The UN Security Council will meet Monday to discuss the conflict at France's request, a spokesman for the country's UN mission said. In France itself, authorities were on high alert over fears of a backlash on home soil by Islamist radicals. Some Gao residents rejoiced at the French strikes but said they needed friendly troops to fill the void as soon as possible. "What we need now is for the Malian army to come here so that the Islamists can't come back," a young student said. Residents of Timbuktu, which has seen some of the worst Islamist abuses over the past 10 months, said they were also eager for French jets to arrive.

French Fighter-Bomber Heading for Striking over Mali
French military releases video of Rafale fighter bombers leaving for mission over Mali. (RFI) French Mirage fighter jets on Sunday pounded Mali for a third day and a top Islamist leader was reported killed as African troops headed to the west African country. "There were [air strikes] last night, there are now and there will be today and tomorrow," Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in televised remarks. "Our intervention is ongoing and we will continue in order to make them [Islamist fighters] retreat and allow Malian and African forces to go forward and re-establish the territorial integrity of the country," Le Drian said. The first troops promised by African nations were expected in Mali on Sunday to join the campaign. Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal on Saturday each pledged 500 troops for an African-led intervention force. Also on Sunday, a security source said a lieutenant of Ansar Dine, Chief Iyad Ag Ghaly, was killed in fighting to recapture the central town of Konna from the rebels. "The Islamist fighters suffered a real setback with the death of Abdel 'Kojak' Krim," the source said. On Saturday French troops arrived in the capital Bamako, flying in from bases in Côte d'Ivoire and Chad, according to a Malian officer. He refused to give details of their numbers or their mission. Colonel Paul Geze, the French mission's commander, told Mali's ORTM television he hoped their mission would succeed "as quickly as possible, in the best conditions possible". ORTM ...

11 Killed During Mali Military Operation - French Airstrike Video
French aircraft pounded Islamist rebels in Mali for a second day on Saturday and neighbouring West African states sped up their plans to deploy troops in an international campaign to prevent groups linked to al Qaeda expanding their power base. France, warning that the control of northern Mali by the militants posed a security threat to Europe, intervened dramatically on Friday as heavily armed Islamist fighters swept southwards towards Mali's capital Bamako. Under cover from French fighter planes and attack helicopters, Malian troops routed a rebel convoy and drove the Islamists out of the strategic central town of Konna, which they had seized on Thursday. A senior army officer in the capital Bamako said more than 100 rebel fighters had been killed. A French pilot died on Friday when rebels shot down his helicopter near the town of Mopti. Hours after opening one front against al Qaeda-linked Islamists, France mounted a commando raid to try to rescue a French hostage held by al Shabaab militants in Somalia, also allied to al Qaeda, but failed to prevent the hostage being killed. French President Francois Hollande made clear that France's aim in Mali was to support the West African troop deployment, which is also endorsed by the United Nations, the European Union and the United States. Western countries in particular fear that Islamists could use Mali as a base for attacks on the West and expand the influence of al Qaeda-linked militants based in Yemen, Somalia and North ...
