Germany and Israel have disagreed over the issue of Jewish settlements on Palestinian land. But Chancellor Merkel stopped short of condemning Israeli actions - actions which have left her European partners furious. Israel is facing increasing isolation on the continent after it announced plans to build 3000 homes on occupied Palestinian territory. Germany criticised the move but didn't join other EU states who called in Israeli ambassadors to condemn it. Relations between the two have been especially tense after Germany abstained from a UN vote which upgraded Palestine's status in the organization. Pirates of the Caribbean is a dark ride at the Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Park (Paris) theme parks. This was the last attraction which Walt Disney himself participated in designing; it opened three months after his death. It is located within the New Orleans Square portion of Disneyland, its facade evoking antebellum New Orleans, topped by a 31-star United States flag (which would indicate the 1850s). An overhead sign at the boat dock names it for the famous pirate Jean Lafitte (although his name is misspelled Laffite), who fought alongside the U.S. Army at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. The second floor of the facade was originally designed to be a private Disney family apartment. Instead it later opened as an art-related retail/museum space called the Disney Gallery until late 2007 when it was replaced by the Disneyland Dream Suite. During the course of the indoor boat ride, guests float through an immersive, larger-than-life pirate adventure featuring gunshots, cannon blasts, burning buildings, and carousing and pillaging pirates, all accompanied by the rollicking theme song, "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" written by George Bruns and Xavier Atencio.

While the campaigns of both President Obama and Mitt Romney are focusing on campaigning heavily in the key swing state of Ohio as if that state really will decide the election, which it still could do so, the race might well be more quietly decided in Pennsylvania. A survey of the state released yesterday by Susquehanna Polling and Research and...

Footage courtesy of: ABC Current Affairs Show '730', with thanks. Grandfather Tim Holmes and his wife save their five grandchildren by hiding beneath a boat jetty in the sea as a wildfire destroyed their home. A British grandfather saved his family by huddling under a jetty for three hours while their hometown in Tasmania was destroyed by wildfires. The island state has suffered the worst damage from a mass outbreak of wildfires across the country. As cooler weather helped thousands of fire fighters battle more than 130 wildfires, survivors have recounted enduring blazes in Tasmania which destroyed more than 100 properties. Bonnie Walker, a mother of five, whose parents were looking after her children, said that she was "bracing myself to lose my children and my parents," as she described her experience of being cut off from her children and parents in the town of Dunalley after they took shelter in the water beneath a wooden jetty. At 3.30pm last Saturday, Ms Walker, who was out of town to attend a funeral, received a message saying that her parents and children "were surrounded by fire". She was later shown a photo of her family under the local jetty. "It's still quite upsetting to see the image, it's all of my, our, five children underneath the jetty huddled up to neck deep sea water which is cold," she told ABC News. "So I knew that that would be a challenge, to keep three non-swimmers above water. And with only my mum and dad and our eldest daughter." Eventually, Ms ...

NATO has begun deploying surface-to-air missiles and troops on Turkey's border with Syria. The Alliance approved the reinforcements last month, after Ankara requested support. NATO claims the move is to help defend its member from the conflict in Syria. But Moscow said the deployment will only serve to escalate tension in the region. Germany and the Netherlands are preparing to ship six more Patriot batteries early next week, they'll be operational by the end of January. However, Jeremy Salt, a Middle Eastern history and politics professor from Bilkent University says NATO is actually now realizing who it's supporting, and losing its appetite for direct action in Syria.
