Jet Harris MBE (6 July 1939 – 18 March 2011), born Terence Harris, was an English musician. He was the bass guitarist of The Shadows until April 1962, and had subsequent success as a soloist and as a duo with the drummer Tony Meehan.^[1]

Early life and career with the Shadows[link]

Harris, the only child^[2] of Bill and Winifred Harris,^[3] was born Terence Harris at Honeypot Lane, Kingsbury, North London, England.^[4] His prowess as a sprinter at Dudden Hill secondary modern school earned him the nickname Jet.^[5] Although he learned to play clarinet as a teenager, he made his own four-string double bass to play in a jazz group and later graduated to a professionally made double bass. In 1958, while playing jazz with drummer Tony Crombie and his group the Rockets, Crombie got a Framus bass guitar for Harris, making him one of the first British exponents of the instrument.^[5] He subsequently was given by Cliff Richard the first Fender Bass (red) guitar in the UK in 1960 soon after Hank Marvin received his Fender Stratocaster (red) guitar. Both instruments were used in The Young Ones film while The Shadows played 'The Savage' (showing the famous Shadows' walk) to an invited audience of teenagers.

He played in several groups including the Vipers Skiffle Group and the Most Brothers before, in 1959, joining Cliff Richard's backing group the Drifters,^[6] who later changed their name to The Shadows at Harris's suggestion. In 1959, after the neck of his Framus was terminally damaged in a dressing room accident, he was presented by the importers with a Fender Precision Bass, one of the first to come to Britain from the United States.^{[citation needed]}

Harris also contributed vocally, adding backup harmonies and occasional lead vocals. He had a trademark scream used in the Shadows' "Feeling Fine" and Cliff Richard's "Do You Wanna Dance?"

In Mike Read's book The Story of the Shadows Harris lays the blame for the start of his depression and related alcohol addiction with Carol Costa, whom he married in 1959.^[2] She, the first of Harris’s four wives, had an affair with Cliff Richard, and remains the only woman known definitively to have slept with Richard.^[7]

In 1962, he left the Shadows following disagreements (documented in The Story of The Shadows, written by the group with Mike Read).^[8] He had been forced to resign (i.e. a constructive dismissal) after Bruce Welch made an off-hand remark about his wife's ongoing affair with Richard. He had never been given time off from the Shadows during 1959-62 to facilitate a reconciliation with his wife and/or deal with his depression and alcoholism.^{[citation needed]}

With Tony Meehan[link]

He signed with Decca and released solo instrumental and vocal work with some success. Then, as part of a duo with former Shadows drummer Tony Meehan, he topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in early 1963 with "Diamonds".^[9] Harris and Meehan followed this with two further hit singles, "Scarlett O'Hara" (also written by Jerry Lordan) a UK #2, and "Applejack" (composed by Les Vandyke) reaching UK #4 also in 1963.^[9] Harris's singles were relatively unusual in that they made prominent use of the bass as a lead instrument which was an idea he got from Big Jim Sullivan, and the best of them—"Diamonds," "The Man With the Golden Arm", and "Man From Nowhere"—had a menacing, shuddering bass reminiscent of the best James Bond soundtracks.^[4] Harris was partly responsible for helping both Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones break into the music business. Page's first major session was as a rhythm guitarist on "Diamonds", in late 1962. After "Diamonds" became a hit, Harris and Meehan hired Jones to play bass in their touring band.^[10] There were several court appearances involving drunkenness and violent behaviour ^[5] before the partnership with Meehan came to an abrupt end in September 1963 when a car crash (in which his girl-friend, singer Billie Davis,^[11] was also injured), meant that this success did not last long.^[4][12] Harris attempted a comeback as the Jet Harris Band, in 1966 and was briefly in the line-up of the Jeff Beck Group in 1967, but somewhat fell out of the music industry.^[4] He then worked variously as a labourer, bricklayer, porter in a hospital, bus conductor, and as a seller of cockles on the beach in Jersey.

Later career[link]

Harris was declared bankrupt in 1988.^[3] The BBC reported that it took Harris 30 years of heavy drinking before he finally admitted to being an alcoholic and sought help. For many years Harris made a point in his stage shows of saying how long it had been since he quit drinking, winning applause from audiences who knew how it had wrecked his career in the 60s. Harris still played occasionally, with backing band the Diamonds or as a guest with the Rapiers, and teamed up with Tony Meehan for a support performance in Cliff Richard's 1989 'The Event' concerts.^{[citation needed]}

In 1998, he was awarded a Fender Lifetime Achievement Award for his role in popularising the bass guitar in Britain. He appeared annually in Bruce Welch's 'Shadowmania' and tours each year with the Rapiers (a Shadows tribute band) who are recording artists in their own right. He recorded continuously from the late 1980s with a variety of collaborators including Tangent, Alan Jones (also an ex-Shadows bassist who retired due to a serious car accident), Bobby Graham and the Local Heroes. His previous problems with stage nerves had seemingly disappeared, and 2006 saw Harris's first single release in over forty years, "San Antonio".^{[citation needed]}

In 2007 Harris was invited by legendary UK singer Marty Wilde to be special guest on his 50th Anniversary tour. This culminated in an evening at the London Palladium with other guests including Wilde's daughters Kim and Roxanne, Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, members of the original Wildcats - Big Jim Sullivan, Licorice Locking and Brian Bennett, who also joined Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch of the Shadows on stage with Wilde and his band the Wildcats (Neville Marten and Eddie Allen on guitar, Roger Newell bass, and Bryan Fitzpatrick, drums). The show's finale featured the closest thing to a Shadows reunion possible with Marvin, Welch, Harris and Brian Bennett (who in 1962 had replaced the late Tony Meehan) all appearing on stage with the show's company.

The evening was filmed and a DVD released, with Harris playing three tunes - "Diamonds", "Theme From Something Really Important" and "Scarlett O'Hara" - backed by the Wildcats.

So successful was this tour that Wilde repeated the invitation to join him on his 2010 Born To Rock And Roll tour, which finished in Basingstoke on November 20. Harris has said that this was his most enjoyable working experience in years.

In a December 2008 interview for the Daily Mail, Harris spoke about not having been invited to join the Shadows for their 50th anniversary, at the Royal Variety Performance.^[13]

His fan club arranged a 70th birthday party for him on 5 July 2009, at the Winter Gardens, Weston-Super-Mare.^[14] He resided in Bembridge, Isle of Wight.^[15]

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.^[16]

In 2010, Harris was presented with a special award from the US Fender guitar company for his services to their company in effectively launching their bass guitar in the UK in 1960.

Personal life and death[link]

Harris had 4 sons.^[3] He was a heavy smoker^[3] and died on 18 March 2011, two years after being diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary, at the home of his partner Janet Hemingway, in Winchester.^{[17][18][19][20]}

In 2012 the Heritage Foundation in the UK erected a blue plaque in his memory at the Kingswood Centre, Honeypot Lane, Kingsbury, on the site of the former Willesden Maternity Hospital where he was born.

Daniel Joseph Anthony "Tony" Meehan (2 March 1943 – 28 November 2005)^[1] was a founder member of the British group The Shadows with Jet Harris, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch. He played drums on early Cliff Richard and The Shadows hits and on early Shadows instrumentals.

Meehan was professionally nicknamed "The Baron" by his many admirers and friends within the British pop/rock music industry. He is reckoned to have influenced many thousands of teenage boys and adolescents to take up music as a career including Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac as a result of his iconic film performance in Cliff Richard's film The Young Ones. His drumming style (qv Bongo Blues, Apache) is noticeably different to the other drummers that the Shadows employed during 1958-2010 such as Brian Bennett, Clem Cattini and Trevor Spencer, preferring a simpler 1950s jazz style kit to a voluminous 1970/80s rock/metal drum kit. Thus his kit was significantly more spartan, in terms of quantity of drums and accessories, than Brian Bennett's modern expansive drum kits through the decades. In his contribution to the 1961 book "The Shadows by Themselves" Meehan gives very useful, timely and helpful advice to all would-be drummers on drum-kit care and maintenance.

Biography[link]

Tony Meehan was born at New End Hospital, New End, Hampstead, North London, England.^[1] He was 10 when he became interested in playing drums. By 13, he had his first job with a band playing in a dance hall at Willesden, London. He also played timpani with the London Youth Orchestra. When he was 15, Meehan was set on becoming a lawyer but he was offered a job at £25 per week in a touring show. He was given six months' holiday. The tour never materialised but he did not go back to school. Unlike other members of the Shadows he was never short of work, playing cabaret at Churchill's and the Stork Club. He also played with Jet Harris in The Vipers.^{[citation needed]}

Meehan left the Shadows in October 1961 to work as an arranger/producer and session drummer for Joe Meek (John Leyton, Michael Cox: "Young Only Once", Andy Cavell) and from early 1962 at Decca Records. He teamed again with Harris (who had also left the Shadows and moved to Decca) and as a duo had success with "Diamonds" which also included Jimmy Page on acoustic rhythm guitar. "Diamonds" was a number one hit in the UK. Harris and Meehan had two further hit singles together - "Scarlett O'Hara" and "Applejack".^[1]

On 1 January 1962, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best were auditioned at Decca by Meehan, performing a selection of covers that The Beatles had performed in various clubs over the years, interspersed with three Lennon–McCartney originals. The Beatles later found out that their manager Brian Epstein had paid Meehan to produce the recordings made that day. Eventually, Decca rejected the Beatles and instead chose The Tremeloes, who had auditioned the same day as The Beatles.

Meehan briefly played with The Shadows some years later when Brian Bennett was in hospital. At one point, John Rostill was in hospital at the same time, and The Shadows were playing live with Brian Locking on bass and Meehan on drums.

Meehan quit the music industry in the 1990s for a major career change as a psychologist, as a result of a lifelong hobby/interest. He worked in London at a local college lecturing psychology until his death. He was a regular church goer at his local Roman Catholic church in Maida Vale.

On 29 November 2005, BBC News quoted Bruce Welch as saying that Meehan had died the previous day, as a result of head injuries, following a fall down the main staircase at his London flat in Maida Vale.^[1] Meehan died at St Mary's Hospital South Wharf Road, Paddington, London.^{[citation needed]}

Barry Stephen Frank Sheene MBE (11 September 1950 – 10 March 2003) was a British World Champion Grand Prix motorcycle road racer.^[1][2]

Early life[link]

Sheene was born in London, the second child of parents Frank (resident engineer at the Royal College of Surgeons) and Iris. He grew up in Queen's Square, Holborn, London.^[3]

Racing career[link]

He became the British 125cc champion aged just 20, and finished second in the World Championships for that class a year later.^[2] Sheene won the newly formed Formula 750 European championship for Suzuki in 1973.^[4] A spectacular crash at the Daytona 200 in the 1975 season threatened to end his career, breaking his left thigh, right arm, collarbone and two ribs, yet he recovered and was racing again seven weeks afterwards.^[3][5]

In 1973, he won the Formula 750 World Championship. In the 1976 season, he won five 500cc Grands Prix, bringing him the World Championship.^[2] He repeated as champion in the 1977 season with six victories.^[2]

Sheene's battle with Kenny Roberts at the 1979 British Grand Prix at Silverstone has been cited as one of the greatest motorcycle Grand Prix races of the 1970s.^[6][7] After the 1979 season, he left the Heron-Suzuki factory team, believing that he was receiving inferior equipment to his team-mates. He shifted to a privateer on a Yamaha machine, but soon started receiving works equipment. In 1981, Kenny Roberts was the reigning World 500cc Champion for the third time, and Barry Sheene, now on a competitive Yamaha, was determined to regain the championship. Ironically, Sheene and Roberts battled all season and let Suzuki riders Marco Lucchinelli of Italy and American Randy Mamola beat them for the top two spots. Roberts finished third and Sheene fourth for the 1981 championship. A crash during the 1982 season largely ended Sheene as a title threat, and he retired in 1984. He remains the only rider to win Grand Prix races in the 50cc and 500cc categories.^[8]

Sheene was known for being outspoken in his criticism for what he considered to be dangerous race tracks, most notably, the Isle of Man TT course, which he considered too dangerous for world championship competition.^[1][9] He was a colourful, exuberant character who used his good looks, grin and Cockney accent to good effect in self-promotion, and combined with an interest in business was one of the first riders to make a lot of money from endorsements.^[3] He is credited with boosting the appeal of motorcycle racing into the realm of the mass marketing media.^[10] He also tried his hand as a TV show host, including the ITV series Just Amazing!, where he interviewed people who had, through accident or design, achieved feats of daring and survival (including the former RAF air gunner, Nicholas Alkemade, who survived a fall of 18,000 feet without a parachute from a blazing Avro Lancaster bomber over Germany in March 1944). Sheene and his wife Stephanie also starred in the low-budget film Space Riders.^[3]

Personal life[link]

In 1975 while on crutches, Sheene met fashion turned glamour model Stephanie McLean, who was Penthouse Pet of the Month for April 1970 and Pet of the Year in 1971, while they were working together on a photoshot for Chrysler. After she had divorced her first husband, the couple married in 1984, and had two children, a son and a daughter.^[3]

Emigration to Australia[link]

The Sheene family moved to Australia in the late 1980s, in the hope that the warmer climate would help relieve some of the pain of Sheene's injury-induced arthritis, moving to a property near the Gold Coast.^[3] He combined a property development business with a role as a commentator on motor sport, first at Nine Network with Darrell Eastlake, then moving with the TV coverage of the motorcycle Grand Prix series to Network Ten.^[3]

In later years, Sheene became involved in historic motorcycle racing.^[1]

Death[link]

He died in 2003 aged 52 of cancer of the oesophagus and stomach, and is survived by his wife Stephanie and two children.^[3][11]

Honours and awards[link]

Following reconstruction of the Brands Hatch Circuit in England for safety concerns after requests by the F.I.M., the Dingle Dell section was changed for safety, and shortly after Sheene's death the new section was renamed Sheene's Corner in his honour. The FIM named him a Grand Prix "Legend" in 2001.^[12] At the 2004 season, V8 Supercars Australia made a memorial medal, calling it the Barry Sheene Medal. A memorial ride from Bairnsdale, Victoria to Phillip Island is held by Australian motorcyclists annually, before the MotoGP held at the island.^[13]

In popular culture[link]

On a side note, the obscure Eric Idle song "Mr. Sheene" which describes "Mr. Sheene's riding machine" appears to be about Barry Sheene.^{[citation needed]} It was released as a B-side of the 1978 single "Ging Gang Goolie" and is credited as released by Rutles-offshoot duo "Dirk and Stig." He is also featured on one of Artist Grayson Perry's Vases My Heroes (1994).

Norman Jay, MBE

Norman Jay MBE (born Norman Bernard Joseph)^[1] is an innovative and pioneering British DJ. He first came to prominence playing unlicensed or 'warehouse' parties in the early 1980s, such as Shake 'n' Fingerpop. His diverse and deep musical knowledge and his refusal to be restricted to playing from any single genre distinguishes him from his peers. He is commonly attributed to coining the phrase 'rare groove'.

Born in Notting Hill, London, Jay established himself through the London pirate radio station Kiss FM, on which he presented shows alongside founders Gordon Mac and George Power. Kiss 100 was launched legally in September 1990 and Norman hosted the first of what became his legendary 'Musiquarium' shows. Shortly after he joined Gilles Peterson at his newly created and highly influential label Talkin' Loud.

After a long involvement with Kiss, Norman joined BBC London in April 1997, where his 'Giant 45' show gained a loyal following across the globe up until February 2008.^[2]

His Good Times Sound System, which he started with his brother Joey, is a major attraction to many music fans who attend the two day August bank holiday Notting Hill Carnival. Good Times now attracts an estimated 15,000 revellers a day during the carnival. Good Times has also extended into a series of compilation CDs.

Jay describes himself as a primarily house music DJ, but the Good Times sound includes classic 70s and 80s funk, soul and jazz-funk, previous carnival tracks have typically included Estelle's 1980; and tracks featured in recent radio shows have included Billy Griffin's Hold Me Tighter In The Rain and more contemporary tracks in the form of Heavy's track Wonderlove.

On BBC Radio 2, he presents the Funk Factory ^[3] which goes out every 6 weeks of the year. In addition to this, Norman was one of 20 DJs who played one track each at the 2005 BBC Worldwide Awards ^[4] which produced three specials for BBC Radio 1 over Christmas and New Year, hosted by Gilles Peterson.

He is an established regular at the Big Chill festival,^[5] where his Sunday afternoon slot on the main stage is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the weekend.

Norman Jay is also a dedicated Tottenham Hotspur football supporter and was awarded the MBE for services to music in 2002.^[6]
