Theodicy, God and Suffering - A debate between Dinesh D'Souza and Bart Ehrman
On Thursday, November 11, 2010 Dinesh D'Souza, former White House domestic policy analyst and recently appointed president of Kings College, debated Bart Ehrman, James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The debate was sponsored by the Center for Christian Studies. Named by the New York Times Magazine as one of America's most influential conservative thinkers, D'Souza is a former policy analyst in the Reagan White House and served as John M. Olin Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Newsweek listed him as one of the country's most prominent Asian Americans. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Ehrman received his Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and has published extensively in the fields of New Testament and Early Christianity. Among his fields of scholarship are the historical Jesus, the early Christian apocrypha, and the manuscript tradition of the New Testament.

Christian/Atheist Debate On Theodicy (The Problem of Evil)
This event was held at Portland State University (PSU) on Sun. 5-13-12. Overview: -------------- If God exists, and he's all-powerful, all-loving, and all-knowing, then why is there so much evil observed in the world? Why was Hitler able to kill 6 million Jews? Why is an earthquake allowed to kill hundreds of thousands of people in a single day? Traditionally, Christian theology appealed to the first sin of humans, Adam and Eve. But when one accepts evolution (humans descended from other animals), there was no Adam and Eve (no "first humans"). (Both the atheist and Christian, in this debate, agree there was no literal Adam and Eve, as parents of all humans alive today.) Part 1: Ben Crockett gives an intro about evolution, and why there is no "first human". Part 2: Bernie lays-out the case why theodicy shows that God (the Christian version) is non-existent. Part 3: Phil explains why this is not a problem for Christianity. After each gives a 10 minute presentation, the moderator questions them, and then they question each other. Then the audience is released for comments and questions. Participants: ------------------- Moderator: Daniel Adler, from the PSU Debate Team Ben Crockett: A leader of the PSU Freethinker's Club, and a biology student Phil Smith: Philosophy professor from George Fox University, representing a Christian viewpoint Bernie Dehler: Secular Humanist (also an atheist), and former evangelical Christian

The Problem of Theodicy
18 7 = part 173 of series Next: 18-8: www.youtube.com playlist 9 www.youtube.com List of uploads within playlist: berties-teapot.blogspot.com Main channel: www.youtube.com The Babylonians, under Nebuchadnezzar, besieged Jerusalem twice: in 597 and 587 BCE. The prophet Habbakuk mused on Yahweh's non-intervention on Judah's behalf. Habbakuh arrived at the standard conclusion that Yahweh was using the Babylonians to punish the people. However, unlike the other prophets, Habbakuk does not claim that the people deserved this catastrophic punishment. Instead, Habbakuk complains about the fact that the just are treated even more harshly than the powerful unjust. In a change of tone that scholars take to be an interpolation, Yahweh is described as a warrior god who will eventually bring justice to those who are patient enough to wait.
