About Seattle Mariners
10/4/12: The Seattle Mariners wrapped up the 2012 season this week by beating the Los Angeles Angels 12-0 at Safeco Field in Seattle. The win gave the Mariners a 75-87 record on the campaign which is an improvement on last season?s effort. The winning pitcher on Wednesday was Blake Beavan. Beavan ended the season with an 11-11 record and a 4.43 ERA. He is one of the guys that Seattle will rely on in the future as he had a really good second half of the season. In other news the Mariners announced that they would be moving in portions of the outfield fence in Safeco Field to give their hitters a more competitive chance.
9/27/12: For a while it seemed that Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez was a lock to pick up his second Cy Young award. He was red hot in July and August but the ace pitcher has cooled of down the stretch. Last night in Anaheim Hernandez took another loss as the Angels beat Seattle 4-3. Hernandez? record now stands at 13-8 and while still decent will not warrant the top prize for pitchers. The Mariners have to be encouraged by the end of the season first baseman Justin Smoak has been having. After struggling all year he is blasting the ball and has three homers in his last two games.
8/16/12: The Seattle Mariners have been having a forgettable season for the most part. They are nine games under .500 and buried in the playoff race. The season became a little more memorable Wednesday afternoon when Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays in Safeco Field. It was the 28th perfect game in Major League Baseball history and the first in Mariners franchise history. Hernandez mowed down all 27 Tampa Bay hitters and struck out 12 in the process. The ace hurler threw his arms into the air after the last out was recorded and was mobbed by his teammates.
7/26/12: The Seattle Mariners shocked their fan base this week when they traded outfielder Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees in exchange for pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. Suzuki had seen his numbers decline and as he makes $18 million a year the fans were growing uneasy with him on the roster. It seemed that the club would not get rid of him however as he has called his own shots throughout his ten years in Seattle. It appears that is still the case as it was announced that he asked the Mariners to trade him to help the club and to give him a chance at winning a World Series Championship.
5/3/12: The Seattle Mariners are one of the youngest teams in Major League Baseball and it is showing with inconsistent play on the field. After sweeping the Detroit Tigers and winning four road games in a row they then went on to drop five in a row. That is what you can expect from this year's Mariners. Their lone bright spot continues to be ace pitcher Felix Hernandez who has now lowered his earned run average to 2.23 although with the Mariners offensive struggles he only finds himself with a 2-1 record on the year. That will probably be a continued theme this season.
4/26/12: The Seattle Mariners struggled over last weekend as they suffered through a mini losing streak of five games at home. To add insult to injury they had a perfect game thrown at them by Chicago's Phillip Humber. This is not promising for a team that was trying to prove they could score more runs this year. They redeemed themselves by beating out 16 runs in the first two games against Detroit as they start a ten game road trip this week. Their 9-1 victory on Wednesday was highlighted by another outstanding outing by ace Felix Hernandez who looks like he is as good as ever so far this season.
