About Los Angeles Kings
10/4/12: The Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings have seen their players scatter around the world to sit out the NHL lockout. Star defenseman Drew Doughty was in Kingston, Ontario to work out with the junior Kingston Knights while team leader Anze Kopitar was playing overseas for Mora. So far in five games he appears to be in fine form as he?s scored two goals, added five assists for seven points. Kopitar is a huge presence measuring at 6?4? tall and one can only imagine how dominant he can be in Europe, playing against lower talent.
9/27/12: The Los Angeles Kings biggest star, Anze Kopitar, signed with the Swedish team Mora last week to play hockey during the NHL lockout. He joins a slew of NHL stars who have bolted overseas to play while the owners and player union hash out the CBA. Kopitar has appeared in two games so far for Mora and has scored one goal and has four assists. Not a bad start for the young star, but not surprising as the talent level in the Swedish league that Mora plays in is a far cry from the NHL. Kings fans, and management are probably holding their breath that Kopitar stays healthy.
8/16/12: The Los Angeles Kings continue to enjoy the spoils of being Stanley Cup Champions. When you win the cup every player gets to spend a day with it to do what they want. The Cup has been from Europe to Manhattan Beach. This week defenseman Willie Mitchell took the Cup to his home on Vancouver Island. He tried to get the Cup to as many spots as he could and give the locals where he grew up a chance to see one of the most revered trophies in sports. The Kings don't have too much longer to enjoy themselves as training camp is set to start in a month.
7/26/12: The defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings had a relatively quiet week as they move closer to opening their training camp. The biggest news may be the whereabouts of the Stanley Cup trophy itself. Every year, each player from the winning team gets to spend a day with the cup in whatever fashion they want to. So far with the Kings, the cup has been to Europe, a ranch in Western Canada and this week Redondo Beach for a charity event. When the Kings do turn their focus back to the ice they will be one of the favorites in the Western Conference as they return the majority of their roster.
Fresh off of a Stanley Cup title, the Los Angeles Kings announced on Thursday that they would give their star goalie Jonathan Quick a 10-year contract extension worth $58 million. Quick was named the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Finals and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy after the Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils in six games to claim the Stanley Cup. He was also in the running for this year's Vezina Trophy, which was ultimately awarded to the New York Rangers' goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Quick was outstanding throughout most of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, leading the Kings to their first ever Stanley Cup.
The Los Angeles Kings captured their first Stanley Cup in team history on Monday night with an emphatic 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. The Kings scored 3 goals on a single power play in the first period, fueled by a boarding major on the Devils' Steve Bernier. The Kings completed an improbable run through the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs in which they went 16-4 and lost only one road game, which came in this series in New Jersey. The Kings wrapped up the 4-2 series win and capped off their magical season that saw them sneak into the playoffs as the 8th seed in the Western Conference and knock out the top three seeds en route to the Cup.
With a chance to hoist the Stanley Cup at home on Wednesday night on the Staples Center ice, the Los Angeles Kings failed to close out the New Jersey Devils and lost 3-1. The Kings will now have to travel back to the east coast for Game 5 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Saturday night to protect their 3-1 series lead. The last four Stanley Cup winners have clinched the series on the opposing team's ice however, so history is on the Kings' side on Saturday night as they look to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Anze Kopitar's overtime goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Los Angeles Kings a thrilling 2-1 win and a 1-0 series lead to go along with it. The Kings are now 9-0 on the road in the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, which is an NHL record. They have won their last 11 postseason road games dating back to last season. With a 1-0 lead, the Kings will look to take their momentum into Game 2 on Saturday night and push themselves closer to their franchise's first title.
5/25/12 The Los Angeles Kings kept their magical season going with a thrilling, and at times controversial, 4-3 overtime win over the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 5 on Tuesday night. The Kings won the series 4-1 and will move on to the Stanley Cup Finals where they will face the winner of the Rangers and Devils Eastern Conference Finals series. The 8th-seeded Kings have been the feel-good story of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs and have been led by the extraordinary play of their goalie, Jonathan Quick, who notched 38 saves in their series-clinching victory.
5/18/12 Anze Kopitar and Dwight King scored goals for the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night as the 8th seeded Kings took a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference finals. The upstart Kings, which have been the surprise of the year in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, have lost only 1 game this postseason so far, and it came in Game 4 of their first round series against Vancouver. Los Angeles is only the 4th team in NHL history to go 11-1 in their first 12 playoff games in one postseason -- the other 3 teams that accomplished that feat before them all lost in the Stanley Cup Finals.
5/11/12 Winners of 8 of their last 9 games, the Los Angeles Kings rolled to an easy sweep of the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference semis to advance to the Western Conference finals where they will face the Phoenix Coyotes. The upstart Kings were the Western Conference's 8th seed going into the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, but easily dispatched the top-seeded Vancouver Canucks 4-1 in the first round and then swept the Blues in the semifinals. The Kings are playing what is unquestionably their best hockey of the year and will look to keep the momentum going against Phoenix for a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.
5/3/12: The Los Angeles Kings are becoming top seed killers so far during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After squeaking into the playoffs as the eighth seed they knocked off top-seeded Vancouver and this week took an early two games to none lead against the second seeded St. Louis Blues. The Kings won both early games in St. Louis and now head back to their home ice looking to sweep the Blues and head to the Western Conference Finals. The Kings were picked by many to be a Cup contender before the season and are finally living up to that hype.
4/26/12: The Los Angeles Kings completed their first round upset of the NHL's top seeded Vancouver Canucks this week with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory in game five of their first round series. The Canucks led what turned out to be the final game of the series until the third period when the Kings tied it. Jarret Stoll was able to beat Cory Schneider for the game and series win. The Kings look like they could make a deep run and will now take on the St. Louis Blues in round two.
