Dowell Myers is a professor of urban planning and demography in the School of Policy, Planning, and Development, at the University of Southern California (USC). He directs the school’s Population Dynamics Research Group, whose recent projects have been funded by the National Institute of Health, the Haynes Foundation, Fannie Mae Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.

He leads the ongoing California Demographic Futures research project at USC.^[1] Recent applications have focused on the upward mobility of immigrants to the US and Southern California, trajectories into homeownership in the United States,^[2] changing transportation behavior, education and labor force trends, and projections for the future of the California population.

In 2000 he was a member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations (Population Association of America) for the United States Census Bureau^[3] and is the author of Analysis with Local Census Data: Portraits of Change (Academic Press, 1992).

In March 2007, the Russell Sage Foundation published his newest book, Immigrants and Boomers: Forging a New Social Contract for the Future of America. In that book Myers calls for a new social contract between the older and younger generations, based on their mutual interests and the moral responsibility of each generation to provide for children and the elderly. Immigrants and Boomers attempts to create a new framework for understanding the demographic challenges facing America and forging a national consensus to address them. Many Americans regard the massive influx of immigrants over the past 30 years with great anxiety, fearing new burdens and unwanted changes to the nation’s ethnic, social, and economic identity. Virtually unnoticed in the contentious national debate over immigration is the even more significant demographic change about to occur as the first wave of the Baby Boom generation retires, slowly draining the workforce and straining the federal budget to the breaking point. Myers in this book argues that each of these two powerful demographic shifts may hold the keys to resolving the problems presented by the other.

In fall 2006, Dowell Myers was recipient of the Haynes Award for Research Impact that was issued on the occasion of the Haynes Foundation’s 80th anniversary.^{[citation needed]}

His undergraduate degree in anthropology from Columbia University was followed by a Master of Planning degree from the University of California, Berkeley. His Ph.D. is in urban planning from MIT and he also studied demography and sociology at Harvard University.^[4]

Dowell Myers has recently testified before the House Committee on the Judiciary about the reform of U.S. immigration policy.^[5]

David Jonathan Gross (born February 19, 1941) is an American particle physicist and string theorist. Along with Frank Wilczek and David Politzer, he was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of asymptotic freedom. He is currently the director and holder of the Frederick W. Gluck Chair in Theoretical Physics at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also a faculty member in the UC Santa Barbara Physics Department.

He was born in Washington, D.C. in February 19th, 1941. His father was Bertram Myron Gross (1912–1998). Gross received his bachelor's degree and master's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966 under the supervision of Geoffrey Chew.

He was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University and a Professor at Princeton University until 1997. He was the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1987, the Dirac Medal in 1988 and the Harvey Prize in 2000.

In 1973, Gross, working with his first graduate student, Frank Wilczek, at Princeton University, discovered asymptotic freedom, which holds that the closer quarks are to each other, the less the strong interaction (or color charge) between them; when quarks are in extreme proximity, the nuclear force between them is so weak that they behave almost as free particles. Asymptotic freedom, independently discovered by Politzer, was important for the development of quantum chromodynamics.

Gross, with Jeffrey A. Harvey, Emil Martinec, and Ryan Rohm also formulated the theory of the heterotic string. The four were to be whimsically nicknamed the Princeton String Quartet ^[1]

Jay Mathews (born April 5, 1945, in Long Beach, California) is an author, education columnist and blogger with the Washington Post. Mathews attended Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, California, Occidental and Harvard College and is a Vietnam veteran. He started at the Post in 1971, writing news reports and books about China, disability rights, the stock market, and several educational topics. Mathews won the 1999 Benjamin Fine Award for Outstanding Education Reporting for both features and column writing. His Class Struggle blog is on washingtonpost.com. He writes at least two columns a week for the newspaper.

Mathews's book Escalante: The Best Teacher in America traces Jaime Escalante's career from his native Bolivia to Garfield High School in East Lost Angeles, where he taught advanced mathematics courses to disadvantaged high school students, mostly Latino. Escalante's story was the subject of the film Stand and Deliver, which starred Edward James Olmos.

Class Struggle: What's Wrong (and Right) with America's Best Public High Schools, was published in March 1998. It explored elite American public high schools and criticized the selection process that offers Advanced Placement Program (AP) studies to only the top students. His national ranking system for high schools, the Challenge Index, formerly in Newsweek, runs on washingtonpost.com as the High School Challenge. Other books explore the growth of International Baccalaureate programs, the Ivy League admissions system and the rise of the KIPP charter schools.

He and his wife Linda Mathews, former New York Times national editor, ABC news producer and USA Today enterprise editor, have three children. One son, Joe Mathews, is also a journalist doing books, articles and events on California affairs and is married to Wall Street Journal reporter Anna Wilde Mathews.

Jonathan E. Fielding

Jonathan Evan Fielding M.D., M.P.H., M.A., M.B.A. (born 1942) is the Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and is the Health Officer for Los Angeles County. In his position of Director Fielding oversees public health activities, including those for environmental health, disease control, health education, health assessment, and chronic diseases.

As Director of one of the largest health departments in the United States, Fielding has led efforts to developed plans to deal with emergencies related to bioterrorism, pandemic flu, and other emerging diseases and conditions. He also has called attention to the underlying health determinants: the physical and social environments in which we live. Fielding also serves as Commissioner and vice-chair of the First 5 L.A. Commission, whose aims are to improve health and development of children 5 years of age and under.

Fielding's salary as Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health was $309,494 in 2010.^[1]

Fielding has been a founding member of a number of national task forces that assess best evidence and make recommendations to improve the health of the public. These include the U.S. Clinical Preventive Services Task Force and the U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force, which he chairs. Fielding is a Professor in both the UCLA School of Medicine and the UCLA School of Public Health ^[2] where he is currently the principal investigator of the Health Forecasting (UCLA) project.^[3] Fielding has published on a wide range of public health as well as preventive medicine issues. He has authored over 160 peer-reviewed articles, chapters and editorials. He has served as Editor of the Annual Review of Public Health, Chairman of the national Partnership for Prevention, a Board Member of the American Legacy Foundation, and an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. In 2006 he received the American Public Health Association (APHA)’s oldest and most prestigious award, the Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Public Health, at the 134th APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition.^[4] In 2008, he was appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt to chair the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on the 2020 Health Objectives for the Nation. He was also appointed to the California Department of Public Health Advisory Committee. In January 2011 he was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health, becoming one of the 13 founding members of the group.^[5]
