For fun, I'd like to spice the night up with the etymology of some of America's favorite curse words- we should know the history of the expletives we use so freely, especially those of us online, right? Presented by Lani Rosales This video was recorded on January 13, 2010 at the first Ignite Austin. If you had 5 minutes, what would you say? Submit a speaker application at igniteaustin.org

Etymology of 'Key'
Oxford Etymological Dictionary says the etymology of "key" is unknown, but that sounds ridiculous to me. Let me show you why. I also show you the cognates in other languages, although these are not derived from Latin clavis. This video is not an etymology of schlüssel.

Word Origins - semantics, meaning change over time (Etymology 2 of 2)
Etymology explores the origin of words - the history and development of individual words in a language. It asks a question you're likely familiar with: "where did this word come from?" The last video introduced etymology as a diachronic (historical) method that seeks to recover and build the history of words. It payed special attention to the way sounds change over time, and presented ways scholars trace a word back to its earliest retrievable form (etymon). In this video, I shift the attention to semantics. Like sound change, meaning change is a dynamic process. Consider various types of semantic change (abstract to concrete, general to specific), origins of meaning change (calques, semantic borrowings) and changes that reveal connections between meaning & use (like archaic, poetic & obsolete words). I'll cap it off with the basic conventions you'll want to notice when looking up an etymology, or follow when doing an etymology. I'll also look at common sources of etymologies (dictionaries, popular "folk etymologies" and onomastics). www.nativlang.com/linguistics

Baphomet the origins and etymology including modern interpretation
Michael W. Ford discusses the origins of Baphomet from pre-Christian origins to Aleister Crowley, Luciferian Witchcraft and modern left hand path symbolism. Baphomet has a composition of many key elements in the occult traditions and is by end result a symbol of the Magus/Black Adept who is balanced with his or her Daemon (True Will).

Bionic Dance & Etymology
Definition of etymology Merriam-Webster: 1: the history of a linguistic form (as a word) shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language 2: a branch of linguistics concerned with etymologies There is nothing in there about constructing new words. www.merriam-webster.com This video is a response to BionicDance's video to ZOMGitsCriss www.youtube.com This is also the comment section referenced in my video. From The Online Etymology Dictionary (which is a wonderful online tool for looking at prefixes/word combinations and how they changed): "This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2000 years ago." www.etymonline.com For instance, look at the differences between agnostic and aglow.

VEDiA 19 - Cake, Explosions, and Etymology
That fetching redhead at the top of the video is fellow geek chanteuse Marian Call. mariancall.com twitter.com/mariancall I'm not sure what the protocol is for catching up on VEDiAs. I think we've already established that time travel is out of the question. Title card music is "Ultra Seven No Uta" as covered by the Kuricorder Quintet. Background music is "AASS" by Aerial M.
