Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City's five boroughs, with approximately 2.5 million residents, and the second-largest in area. Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, which is now the most populous county in New York State and the second-most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County (Manhattan). It is also the westernmost county on Long Island.
Brooklyn was an independent city until it was annexed by New York City in 1898. It continues to maintain a distinct culture. Many Brooklyn neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves where particular ethnic groups and cultures predominate.
Brooklyn's official motto is Eendraght Maeckt Maght. Written in the (early modern spelling of the) Dutch language, it is inspired by the motto of the United Dutch Provinces and translated "Unity makes strength". The motto is displayed on the borough seal and flag, which also feature a young robed woman bearing fasces, a traditional emblem of republicanism. Brooklyn's official colors are blue and gold.

Hunter College, established in 1870, is a public university and one of the constituent organizations of the City University of New York, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Hunter provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in more than one hundred fields of study, and is recognized nationally for its diversity and reputation for academic excellence. Hunter College has its origins in the 19th-century movement for normal school training which swept across the United States. Founded by Irish immigrant Thomas Hunter, who was president of the school during the first 37 years, it was originally a women's college for training teachers. The school, which was housed in an armory and saddle store at Broadway and East Fourth Street in Manhattan, was open to all qualified women, irrespective of race, religion or ethnic background. At the time most women's colleges had racial or ethno-religious admissions criteria.

Anna Boden
Anna Boden is an American film director, cinematographer, editor, and screenwriter best known as the co-writer of the 2006 film Half Nelson. She is known for her collaborations with fellow filmmaker Ryan Fleck.
While studying film at NYU, Boden met Ryan Fleck on the set of a student film. Soon they began dating and decided to collaborate. Together they made the short documentaries Have You Seen This Man? and Young Rebels before they wrote and he directed the short film Gowanus, Brooklyn, a sample feature aiming to attract potential financiers to their undeveloped script, Half Nelson. The short won a prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Boden and Fleck then made the film, Half Nelson starring Ryan Gosling in 2006.
Boden and Fleck have since co-written and co-directed the 2008 film Sugar, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, about a 19 year-old Dominican who immigrates to the United States to play minor league baseball. They wrote the screenplay together after doing extensive research about Dominican immigrants who arrive in America to play in minor league towns.

Emma Roberts
Emma Rose Roberts (born February 10, 1991) is an American actress, model and singer. She is the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts. Roberts became known for her role as Addie Singer in the Nickelodeon television series Unfabulous. She released her debut album, which also served as the show's soundtrack Unfabulous and More. Keir David Peters Gilchrist (born September 28, 1992) is a Canadian actor. Gilchrist is known for playing teen Marshall Gregson on Showtime's original series United States of Tara, and for starring in the 2010 drama-comedy It's Kind of a Funny Story.

Edison Price "Ned" Vizzini (born April 4, 1981) is an American writer who is the author of books for young adults. His novels are It's Kind of a Funny Story, Be More Chill, and Teen Angst? Naaah.... He has been a columnist for the New York Press since his teens. He has written for The Daily Beast, and season 2 of MTV's Teen Wolf. As of 2012[update], Vizzini writes reviews for The New York Times and L Magazine. Ned Vizzini frequently speaks at schools and libraries around the world about mental health, writing, and how students can use writing as a medicine for mental health. He has spoken at UCLA; the Dalton School; the Brooklyn, New York, and Chicago Public Libraries; Murray State University; NYU; the National Council of Teachers of English; and at a Master's Tea at Yale.[1]

Vizzini grew up primarily in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. He attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, graduating in 1999.[2] At fifteen he began to write articles for the New York Press, an alternative newspaper.
After he wrote an essay that was published by The New York Times Magazine, several of his essays about his young adult life ended up being combined into his first book, Teen Angst? Naaah.... Vizzini attended Hunter College, also located in Manhattan. As of 2012[update], Ned Vizzini lives in Los Angeles and continues to write and to speak about his books.[3] Vizzini's characters and situations are said to be based upon his time spent at Stuyvesant.[4]

- Teen Angst? Naaah..., a "quasi-autobiography" that consists of essays about Vizzini's young adult years attending Stuyvesant High School.
- Be More Chill, Vizzini's fiction debut follows the adventures of Jeremy Heere, a terminally "uncool" teenage boy. Jeremy's life changes when he buys a "squip", a pill that gives the user instructions on how to act cool.
- It's Kind of a Funny Story, Vizzini's second novel follows a depressed young man who becomes suicidal and checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. The book was inspired by Vizzini's own brief hospitalization for depression in November 2004, as described in the book's endnotes. Its movie rights were sold to Paramount. The motion picture, starring Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, and Emma Roberts and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, debuted on October 8, 2010.
- The Other Normals, will be Vizzini's fourth book and will be published in October 2012. It is a very funny story about about a late bloomer who unexpectedly turns into an epic warrior at summer camp.[5] Its publication was announced on March 21, 2011 in Publishers Weekly, and it's cover was released on EW.com on February 24, 2012.
- House of Secrets, a book co-authored by Ned Vizzini and Chris Columbus about the Pagett kids who find themselves in a mashed up world created by a fantasy writers imagination.[6]

Vizzini is a town and comune in the province of Catania, on the island of Sicily. It is located 60 km from Catania in the Hyblaean Mountains, on the most northwesterly slopes of Monte Lauro.
The commune territory is bounded by the comuni of Buccheri, Francofonte, Giarratana, Licodia Eubea, Militello in Val di Catania, Mineo.

Bidis, a Roman city mentioned by Pliny and Cicero, stood here in a territory that has been inhabited since prehistoric times.[1]
The modern town developed in the Middle Ages around a now non-extant castle,[2] as a fief of various lords, including the Chiaromontes and the Schittinos, although for many years it was also part of the royal domain.
In 1358, Roland of Sicily reconquered the area from Vizzini to Avola.

The Arab layout of the town can be clearly seen passing from Via Verga to Via San Gregorio Magno and proceeding as far as Largo della Matrice, a square with a statue of St. Gregory in the middle and the Chiesa Madre (S. Gregorio Magno) at one side.
The portal on the left face of the church, in splendid 15th century Gothic-Catalan style, probably came from the old Town Hall, destroyed by the earthquake in 1693; in the interior there are late 18th century stuccos and a wooden ceiling by Natale Bonaiuto, as well as two paintings (The Martyrdom of St. Laurence and the Madonna delle Mercede) by Filippo Paladini (or Paladino), born in Florence about 1544. Another painting by Paladino, The Deposition (1607), is in the Chiesa del Convento dei Cappuccini.
Nearby is the Chiesa di Sant'Agata, rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of a previous 15th century building and houses a pipe organ[3] created around 1770.
The church of San Giovanni Battista is from the 18th century. The stuccos decorating the interior are by Natale Bonaiuto (also mentioned with reference to the Chiesa Madre).
Antonello Gagini is present in the Chiesa dei Minori Osservanti, with a fine statue of the Madonna and Child (1527).

Judy Blume (née Sussman; born February 12, 1938) is an American author.[1] She has written many novels for children and young adults which have exceeded sales of 80 million and been translated into 31 languages.[2] Blume's novels for teenagers were among the first to tackle racism (Iggie's House), menstruation (Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.), divorce (It's Not the End of the World, Just As Long As We're Together), bullying (Blubber), masturbation (Deenie; Then Again, Maybe I Won't) and teen sex (Forever). Blume has used these subjects to generate discussion, but they have also been the source of controversy regarding age-appropriate reading.[3]
Judy Blume’s classic 1981 novel Tiger Eyes will be on the big screen. The film version of the novel, directed by the author's son Lawrence Blume, is starring Willa Holland as Davey and Amy Jo Johnson as Gwen Wexler. The Tiger Eyes movie is currently in production with a projected release date sometime in 2012.[4]

Early life[link]
Blume was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Esther (née Rosenfeld), a homemaker, and Ralph Sussman, a dentist.[5] She has a brother, David, who is five years older.[6] Blume later recalled, "I spent most of my childhood making up stories inside of my head." She graduated from Battin High School in 1956, then enrolled in Boston University. In the first semester, she was diagnosed with mononucleosis and took a brief leave from school[7] before graduating from New York University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in teaching.[8][9]
Career[link]
A lifelong avid reader, Blume first began writing when her children were attending preschool,[10] and published her first book, The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo, in 1969. The decade that followed proved to be her most prolific, with 13 more books being published, including many of her most well-known titles, such as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (1970), Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (1972), Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great (1972), and Blubber (1974).[11]
After publishing novels for young children and teens, Blume tackled another genre—adult reality and death. Her novels Wifey (1978) and Smart Women (1983) shot to the top of The New York Times best-seller list. Wifey has become a bestseller, with over 4 million copies sold to date. Her latest and third adult novel Summer Sisters (1998) was widely praised and has sold more than 3 million copies.[12] It spent 5 months on The New York Times Bestseller list,[13] with the hardcover reaching #3[14] and the paperback spent several weeks at #1.[15][16]
Blume has won more than ninety literary awards. In 2004, she was awarded the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.[17] In 1996 the American Library Association selected Blume for its Margaret A. Edwards Award for her contributions to young adult literature.[18] Blume received the Library of Congress Living Legends award in the "Writers and Artists" category in April 2000 for her significant contributions to America's cultural heritage. Several of Blume's books appear on the list of top all-time bestselling children’s books.
Blume is also an advocate for teachers reading aloud to their students. She gets an uncountable amount of mail from students and adults whose teachers read aloud to them. Blume herself has specific memories of being read aloud to by her teachers. Blume believes that if teachers would take the time to introduce good books to students, perhaps there would not be as many reluctant readers.
Censorship[link]
Though light in tone, many of Judy Blume's books deal with difficult issues for children, including questioning the existence of God, friendship, religion, divorce, body image, and sexuality. However, Blume has stated that she does not set out to tackle these issues when writing. She begins with a character, or sometimes a character and a situation.
Fans of Blume's novels have praised her use of real-life settings, ambivalent endings, and gentle humor. Her allegedly ambiguous treatment of moral issues made her at one time a regular target of school library censors and the Religious Right.[19] Her books are still often challenged in school libraries. In fact, Forever was the second most challenged book of 2005, according to the American Library Association. In an interview with Publisher's Weekly, Blume states that the fear of censorship can be contagious. In another interview, Blume tells Judy Freeman, children's literature consultant and author, that the sadness came from a sadness for children who may not be allowed to read banned books. She said, "It says to them, 'There's something in this book we don't want you to know about, something we don't want to discuss with you.'" She is recognized as one of the most banned children's authors in the United States[20] which eventually led her to edit a collection of short stories about censorship (Places I Never Meant to Be). Despite ardent attempts at censorship, Blume's young adult novels and books for children have sold 80 million copies worldwide.[21]
In her efforts to preserve for young readers intellectual freedom in literature, Blume joined the National Coalition Against Censorship, which comprises fifty not-for-profit organizations that come together to fight censorship. Judy Blume has also founded or is closely affiliated with several other organizations regarding children’s literature and censorship, including, The Kids Fund, The Authors Guild (she serves, in 2010, as the group's vice president), the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the Key West Literary Seminar. Blume is also the editor for a collection of short stories, Places I Never Meant To Be, Original Stories by Censored Writers. Blume also tells Freeman that censorship is not getting any better. There has been a rise in challenged books over the years. Blume urges teachers and writers who feel passionately about censorship to speak out and share their voice on the subject.
Marriages and family[link]
On August 15, 1959, she married John Blume, whom she had met while a student at New York University; the wedding was held in the summer of her sophomore year of college. He later worked as a lawyer, while she briefly supported her family as a homemaker before pursuing teaching and writing.[22] The Blumes had two children: Randy Lee, an airline pilot (born 1961), and Lawrence Andrew, a filmmaker (born 1963). The couple separated in 1975 and were legally divorced by 1976.[23] Blume would later describe the marriage as "suffocating".[24][25]
Shortly after her separation, she met Thomas A. Kitchens, a physicist. The couple married in 1976, and Kitchens moved them to New Mexico for his work. They divorced in 1978. She later spoke up about their split: "It was a disaster, a total disaster. After a couple years, I got out. I cried every day. Anyone who thinks my life is cupcakes is all wrong."[24]
A mutual friend introduced her to George Cooper, a former law professor, now non-fiction writer. Blume and Cooper were married in 1987.[26] Cooper has an only child from a previous marriage, a daughter named Amanda. They currently reside in Key West.[27]

He has been a columnist for the New York Press since his teens. He has written for The Daily Beast, and season 2 of MTV's Teen Wolf. As of 2012[update], Vizzini writes reviews for The New York Times and L Magazine.
