Sundance Film Festival 2011 'Close.'
One night after a casual 'visit', Angela is all but ready to leave Derek's apartment. Derek, however, is determined no to let her go without a fight. Programmer's Note: Tahir Jetter makes his first visit to the Sundance Film Festival with his dramatic short film "Close." With its truthful and intimate look at a turning point in a relationship, Jetter describes "Close." as "heavily autobiographical." In fact, at the New York premiere of the short, one particular audience member found the film's narrative more than coincidental, to which Jetter can only comment, "Nothing like making a movie about a person you've been romantically involved with and then having that person go and see it." A graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Jetter is working on expanding "Close." into a feature film.

Sundance Film Festival 2011 "The Hunter And The Swan Discuss Their Meeting"
A Brooklyn couple have dinner with a hunter and his girlfriend, a magical swan woman. It doesn't go well. Programmer's Note: Emily Carmichael is in many ways a Renaissance girl. As a Harvard University undergraduate, she studied painting and literature; wrote and directed two full-length plays; directed a production of "Macbeth: The Puppet Shakespeare" for which she designed and sculpted 22 clay puppets; and created the comic strip "Whiz Kids," which ran in the "Harvard Crimson" for more than two years. In 2006, she entered the MFA film program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she has written and directed several live-action and animated shorts in addition to a couple of short documentaries. Carmichael's films have screened at the Anthology Film Archives, Slamdance, the South by Southwest Film Festival, and the CineVegas International Film Festival. Her newest film—"The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting"—is a modern dating fable set in a magical world where naked swans become human and romantic unions between birds and people are not without their share of problems. It's as funny as it is fantastical and shows Carmichael's ability to bring together two unlikely worlds in one very funny setting. For more info on Carmichael, check out her production company Kid Can Drive at www.kidcandrive.com.

Sundance Film Festival 2011 "Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul"
In a country with innumerable problems, Skateistan represents an oasis where children can be children and build the kinds of cross-cultural relationships that Afghanistan needs for future stability. Programmer's Note: Former professional snowboarder Orlando von Einsiedel found that the Skateistan project combined two worlds he felt very passionate about: extreme sports and social work. The Skateistan project—started by two Australian aid workers who began giving skating as well as educational lessons to more than 350 kids in Kabul, Afghanistan—equips young men and women with the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development and piqued von Einsiedel's interest enough to make him want to capture it with a camera. Flying directly from Frankfurt to Kabul, von Einsiedel and crew sought to create a more optimistic image of Afghanistan. What resulted is a beautifully composed film that turns a spotlight on neither the battles nor the victims in this war-torn country, but rather on the hopeful spirit and culture of change that the youth of Kabul are yearning to put into action. We're thrilled to welcome von Einsiedel's film to this year's Festival and urge you to check out skateistan.org on your next Internet stop.

Sundance Film Festival 2011 "8 Bits"
A fight between an 8-bit superhero and a high-def boss, in a retro-gaming world. Programmer's Note: Assaulting the senses with dazzling visual imagery and gloriously over-the-top action, this high-octane animated adventure plays with classic video-game archetypes while simultaneously concocting its own fully rendered environment. Collectively directed by Valere Amirault, Sarah Laufer, Jean Delaunay, and Benjamin Mattern, the film displays the considerable talents of all four artists in developing an atmospheric anomaly of stylistic bravado that fashions a fight between an 8-bit superhero and a high-def boss in a retrogaming world. Much appreciated for the painstaking hard work involved as well as the fast-paced clarity of the result, "8BITS" is a welcome shot in the arm for any program. Sundance Film Festival Classics "Countertransference"
A lonely woman with assertiveness issues finds her problems multiplied in therapy. Programmer's Note: 'Countertransference,' Madeleine Olnek's ( www.madeleineolnek.com ) second Sundance Film Festival entry (she debuted in Park City with the short film 'Hold Up' in 2006) shows how her background as a playwright has enabled her to harness stellar performances (most notably Deb Margolin as the lead) and deliver a script textured with both hilarity and depth. Overcoming some challenges on set - like an equipment truck hitting a parked car and causing $1400 worth of damage - the fearless director put together what was one of this year's most hysterical productions. Olnek returns to the Festival this year with her feature 'Codependent Lesbian Alien Seeks Same' which shows her universal appeal for laughs and language, and proves that you don't need a ton of dough to make a proper science-fiction fantasy. http
