Health Care Without Harm
Gary Cohen was a travel writer whose life was changed by an assignment to draft a community guidebook about toxic chemicals. After meeting mothers working to protect their families from toxic dumps and other chemical threats, he devoted his life to the field of environmental health. He was first co-director of the National Toxics Campaign and cofounder of the Military Toxics Project, then helped launch a free clinic serving survivors of a chemical disaster in Bhopal, India. When he returned home, he co-founded Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) in 1996. Since then, HCWH has become a worldwide phenomenon, moving markets and changing practices through partnerships with major hospital systems and their institutional buyers.

Health Care Spending Increases but Rate Slows With Economy
While health care spending rose in 2012, it did so only slightly due to the recession and slow overall economic growth. Ray Suarez talks to Health Affairs' Susan Dentzer about the dichotomies of health care spending, including why there has been a slowdown in health care spending when personal out-of-pocket costs have increased.

Health Care CEOs Pinpoint Demographics, Consolidation as Themes for 2013
www.reit.com As the sector remains one of the most active on the acquisitions front, health care REIT CEOs spoke with REIT.com about what they anticipate will be some of the dominant trends in the sector for 2013. Debra Cafaro, chairman and CEO ofVentas Inc. (NYSE VTR), pointed to graying demographics as being one of the primary trends in the health care sector. "It is an inexorable, powerful trend. The over-85s are the fastest growing segment of the United States' population," she said. "That's the cohort that uses skilled nursing and uses our senior housing facilities from coast to coast." Cafaro added that the baby boomer population in the US, currently comprised of about 79 million people, is also an important demographic within the health care sector. She said the first group of baby boomers became Medicare-eligible in 2011. "There we see our medical office building and outpatient setting really serving that population," she said. Jay Flaherty, chairman and CEO of HCP Inc. (NYSE: HCP), noted that partner operators in the health care space will experience a lot of consolidation activity. "As a derivative of that, real estate portfolios will fall out of that activity, which will then present themselves for the health care REITs to take a look at, he said. Wendy Simpson, president and CEO of LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC), said one of the big issues will center on reimbursement levels and the type of facility where patients will be receiving their care—whether assisted ...

Healthcare: Romney Says Uninsured Don't Just Die/ It's Paid For
"Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who has pledged to repeal Obamacare, says that people without health insurance don't have to worry about dying as a result. "We don't have people that become ill, who die in their apartment because they don't have insurance," Romney said in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch's editorial board on Wednesday."* Steve Oh, Jimmy Dore, and RJ Eskow break down Romney's ideas on health insurance and what the media is doing to cover it. *Read more from Bonnie Kavoussi/Huffington Post Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

How the Market Can Cure the Health Care Crisis w/Dr. Keith Smith!
Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised eyebrows yesterday when he said he would "not get rid of all of healthcare reform." Romney's statement made headline news because it differed from his previous rhetoric of "repealing ObamaCare." We would rather hear politicians explain the real reasons for why a trip to the ER for a headache can amount to a bill of $10000. Could it be that healthcare isn't actually that expensive? Over the years healthcare costs in the US have increased from 5% of GDP in the 60s to 17.4% in 2009, according to an OECD report published in 2011. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine calculated systemic waste in the US healthcare system at $765 billion, representing 30% of total expenditures. We ask Doctor Keith Smith, Managing Partner and Medical Director for the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, about the role of insurance companies, wasteful administration costs, and hospital inefficiencies. Keith Smith runs an independent surgical clinic and brings free market competitive prices to surgery. He offers customers lower prices and patients fly in from all over the world, even from countries with universal healthcare systems, to get surgery at his center. And in today's "Loose Change," Lauren and Demetri discuss former Reagan Budget Director, David Stockman, recent appearance on CNBC. Specifically, Stockman's comment that "Ron Paul is the only one who is right about the Fed ...
