Several synonyms exist for epidermoid cysts, including epidermal cyst, epidermal inclusion cyst, infundibular cyst and keratin cyst. "Epidermal inclusion cyst" more specifically refers to implantation of epidermal elements into the dermis. Infundibular cyst refers to the site of origin of the cyst: the infundibular portion of the hair follicle. In fact, the majority of epidermal inclusion cysts originate from the infundibular portion of the hair follicle thus explaining the interchangeable, yet technically incorrect, use of these two terms.
Epidermoid cysts commonly result from implantation of epidermis into the dermis, as in trauma or surgery. They can also be caused by a blocked pore adjacent to a body piercing. They are also seen in Gardner's syndrome on the head and neck. They can be infected by bacteria and form a pimple-like shape.
This patient of mine has a pretty sizable cyst on his upper back. It has never been squeezed, never been inflamed or infected. These are the easiest types of cysts to be removed if they are untouched, since there is no scar tissue present, so the entire cyst is more easily extracted.
Epidermoid cysts are benign growths under the skin, a sac containing keratin (skin cells), that can continue to grow gradually since skin cells continue to "flake off" into the cyst sac.
The only way to prevent recurrence of this type of growth is to excise it and make sure the entire sac wall is removed. Which is what I do in this case.

The following is what ensued: loud voices, a horrible stench, an inexplicable amount of something exiting my body, a wife about to throw up, a phone covered in the substance from three feet away, etc.
It's gross, it's amazing (to me anyway), it's un-sterile (cleaned and disinfected afterward... heading to the doc's Monday) -- and it's AWESOME.

This is an epidermoid cyst, a benign growth that creates a sac under the skin the contains macerated keratin (skin cells). It can grow and shrink, but it likely won't go away until the entire sac is removed either by excision, or if it gets inflamed and infected and the entire cyst sac is destroyed.
Here I use a small punch biopsy to make the initial incision, I squeeze the cyst and remove the entire sac and its contents before I pla

Hello Pimple Poppers!
Here is an example of a re-excision of a cyst that recurred on the neck of one of my patients.
Epidermoid cysts are quite common and can occur in people of all ages. Usually if cysts do not cause any symptoms or pose a health threat no treatment is necessary. However, if you do have a cyst that you are self-conscious about, or certainly if it becomes ruptured or inflamed, I recommend you go see your dermatologist for consultation.
As you can see its a quick, simple procedure that typically has no complications or side effects.

Removal of large epidermoid cyst from floor of the mouth
So after 20 years of having this "lump" on my thigh -- after having several doctors tell me the lump was a calcium deposit or fatty tissue or some such inocuous thing -- I decided to give it a little squeeze.

This is a lovely patient of mine, who recently completed chemotherapy and radiation treatments due to breast cancer.
She noticed this lump on her cheek that has grown quite rapidly in the last year. I don't think this cyst appearance or growth is directly related to her recent breast cancer diagnosis or treatment, but I will send this epidermoid cyst that I remove for pathology diagnosis, just to check the tissue just in case. I doubt that there is any cancer in this area... but it is distressing to her to have a bump on the cheek, so it's understandable to just be on the safe side.
I was pleased that I was able to remove this cyst, creating as small an incision as possible. I had to squeeze most of the cyst contents out of a small opening, to ensure that the incision length would be short.
As many of you know, these epidermoid (also called sebaceous) cysts, are not life threatening, but are mainly concerning because of their appearance, and if there is a history of them getting irritated and/or infected. It's important to remove the entire cyst, especially the sac the holds the cyst, to prevent recurrence. This surgery is done completely under local anesthesia, the patient is never in any pain or discomfort, and she should go back to normal activity pretty much immediately.

Epidermoid cysts (aka sebaceous cysts) are benign painless growths that can occur under the skin. It's not medically necessary to remove these types of cysts, but to may people, they are a source of embarrassment, and many people request removal. It's important to remove the entire cyst, including the wall of the cyst, because if any remnant is left, there is a chance of recurrence.

This is a patient I see on a regular basis for skin exams, and she had this noticeable bump on her right cheek that she says has been there for a while, and every now and then she can squeeze the contents out.
Here I use a small punch biopsy to make the initial incision, I squeeze the cyst and remove the entire sac and its contents before I place a few sutures to close the wound.
Thank you so much for watching!

Hope it's helpful to see the procedure! Don't forget to subscribe!

Epidermoid cyst. In our expert opinión from Mexico
There is a clear compressive cause for a severe and rebellious pharmacologically trigeminal neuralgia due to the presence of a bening tumor called epidermoid cyst.
On our statistics, among five hundred TN patients, up today it represents a little bit more tan 1% of all TN diagnosis.
The clinical diagnosis is simple, a TN case and so. The evidence is based on MRI images showing positive presence for a abnormal fat tissue surrounding the brain stem more often upon the trigeminal cistern.
The definitive treatment consist to a skull base surgery, mini-open of less than 18 mm to reach the cisternal space and step by step to totally remove the soft and pearly aspect tumor, as we show on this video.
We propose several advantages, short time at hospital, minimally invasive brain surgery, no blood transfusion, no secundary effects due to radiation therapy, no time spent in critical care unit, slight and sweet wake-up after anesthesia, selective multidisciplinary human resources and high level of forefront tehcnology.

Removal of a large epidermoid cyst, upper back
Removal of a large epidermoid cyst, upper back
This patient of mine has a pretty sizable cyst on his upper back.
An interesting complication to this case was the fact that he had a tattoo overlying the cyst. I was able to remove the cyst completely without significantly altering his tattoo. This is part of what makes dermatology fun and interesting!

Epidermoid Cyst being "drained" after almost 20 years... projectile! Wow.
So after 20 years of having this "lump" on my thigh -- after having several doctors tell me the lump was a calcium deposit or fatty tissue or some such inocuous thing -- I decided to give it a little squeeze.

Punch of an epidermoid cyst behind the ear
This patient came to see me for Mohs skin cancer surgery to remove a skin cancer next to his eye. He asked If I could remove an epidermoid cyst he had behind his ear when we were finished with his skin cancer surgery. My staff was a little annoyed I think, since we were pretty busy. But, he was a nice guy, so I obliged. :)

Cowboys Fans, Epidermoid Cyst and Late for Lunch!
Hey cyst fans! We have some fresh material for you to enjoy today thanks to our new Dallas Cowboys fan "Jillian"! She brings us an epidermoid cyst that was ignored by her dermatologist. This cyst has sporadically drained on occasion and has an awful odor. Yuck.
So with the help of Coconut and Gonzo we dive head first into this scarred-down, stubborn cyst. Along the way, "Jillian"'s spouse decides to abuse us Texans fans with tales of Cowboys' glory.
I hope you enjoy and thanks for being fans! Get out the popcorn and get ready for a show. At just over 24 minutes long this is an epic cyst removal video!

Epidermoid cyst excision on the cheek
Epidermoid cyst excision on the cheek
