Grigori Kozintsev - Don Quixote (1957) - Clip 1
Available on DVD from Mr Bongo www.mrbongo.com After years spent reading books of chivalry, a middle-aged Spanish gentleman (Nikolai Cherkassov) is convinced that he is the real-life knight-errant, Don Quixote de la Mancha. To this end, he commissions his battered horse Rocinante to be his steed and appoints fellow Manchegan Sancho Panza (Yuri Tolubeyev) to be his reluctant squire. Both Knight and Squire find themselves living anachronisms in 16th Century Spain, subject to constant humiliation and frequent defeat; safeguarded only by Sancho s good humour and Quixote s mad zeal. Don Quixote, made in 1957, is the first version of the novel in colour and CinemaScope, shot on location in the Crimean region. In adapting Cervantes, Grigori Kozintsev anticipates the style of his renowned Shakespeare adaptations (Hamlet, King Lear); crafting a film of comparable visual richness and poetic wit. The legendary Nikolai Cherkassov (Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible) adds a third to his roster of iconic screen roles with his stirring performance as the Knight of the Rueful Face.

Adventures of Don Quixote (1933) FULL MOVIE
www.zazzle.com Adventures of Don Quixote (1933) is the English title of a film adaptation of the classic Miguel de Cervantes novel, directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst, starring the famous operatic bass Feodor Chaliapin. Although the film stars Chaliapin, it is not an opera; however, he does sing three songs in it. It is the first sound film version of the Spanish classic. The supporting cast in the English version includes George Robey, René Donnio, Miles Mander, Lydia Sherwood, Renée Valliers, and Emily Fitzroy. The film was made in three versions -- French, English, and German -- with Chaliapin starring in all three versions. The producers separately commissioned five composers (Jacques Ibert, Maurice Ravel - who wrote three songs -, Marcel Delannoy, Manuel de Falla and Darius Milhaud) to write the songs for Chaliapin; each composer believed only he had been approached. Ibert's music was chosen for the film, but this caused him some embarrassment as he was a close friend of Ravel's. Ravel considered a lawsuit against the producers. He dropped the action, and the two composers remained close friends. Changes in Plot: The film condenses the novel significantly and scrambles up the order of Quixote's adventures. There are several changes. Quixote is "dubbed" a knight not by an innkeeper, but by a traveling actor who is appearing as a king in a play that Don Quixote mistakenly believes to be real. As in the later 1957 Russian film version of the novel, the attack on the ...

13. Don Quixote, Part II: Front Matter and Chapters I-XI
Cervantes' Don Quixote (SPAN 300) The modern novel that develops from the Quixote is essentially a political novel and an urban genre dealing with cities. In Part II there is a sense of the text being written and performed in the present because it incorporates current events, such as the expulsion of the moriscos, a critic of the arbitristas and a satire of the aristocracy. In part two of the Quixote Part I plays the role that the romances of chivalry played in Part I: the characters have read the first part and so a new larger mirror has been added to the play of mirrors that was already present. Characters evolve within a social context, which is consonant with the political character of the novel and has much to do with the development and evolution of realism in literature in the representation of every day life and of common people. An explanation of the Baroque aspects that appear in the second part of the novel helps to understand the Quixote as a whole and its relation with the first part. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
Sara Montiel Tribute
Here is a great song by legendary singer Sara Montiel. Sara Montiel (also Sarita Montiel or Saritísima) (born in 1928) is a Spanish singer, and actress. She is still a much-loved and internationally known name in the Spanish-speaking movie and music industries. She was born in Campo de Criptana in the region of New Castile in 1928 as María Antonia Alejandra Vicenta Elpidia Isidora Abad Fernández. After her unprecedented international hit in Juan de Orduña's "El Último Cuplé" in 1957, Montiel achieved the status of mega-star in Europe and Latin America. She was the first woman to distill sex openly in Spanish cinema at a time when even a low cut dress was not acceptable. Montiel was the most commercially successful Spanish actress during the mid twentieth century in much of the world. Miss Montiel's film "Varietes" was banned in Beijing in 1973. Her films "El Último Cuple" and "La Violetera" netted the highest gross revenues ever recorded for films made in the Spanish speaking movie industry during the 50's and 60's. She also played the role of Antonia, the niece of Don Quixote, in the 1947 Spanish film version of Cervantes's great novel. In 1974 Montiel announced her retirement from movies but continued performing live, recording and starring on her own variety television shows in Spain. She kept on at that pace well into the 1990's. In 2000 her autobiography "Memories: To Live Is A Pleasure" became a huge best seller, followed by a second part "Sara and Sex", which ...

My Choice 429 - Gigliola Cinquetti: Marcelino Pan y Vino
Gigliola Cinquetti singing Marcelino Pan y Vino from the 1955 Spanish film ''Marcelino pan y vino''. This film was a success, and other countries have produced versions of it. The 1955 film was written by José María Sánchez Silva, who based it on his novel, and directed by Ladislao Vajda. Its stars were Rafael Rivelles, Juan Calvo (who also starred together as Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the 1947 Spanish film version of Cervantes's Don Quixote) and the young child star Pablito Calvo (no relation to Juan) as Marcelino. The background score and the film's theme song are by Pablo Sorozábal. The film became the inspiration of the high-rating drama in the Philippines, May Bukas Pa. The story, revised and modernized in both the book and film, dates back to a medieval legend, one of many gathered together in a volume by Alfonso el Sabio.Video by Alfred with the help of Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech, Mosta, Malta. © jasalf5959 - 2010 Music is copyrighted by its corresponding owners.
