'Militants on verge of total defeat in Syria'
A political analyst tells Press TV that foreign-backed militants are experiencing worst-ever defeats in certain areas in Syria. The comments came after the Syrian military sources denied reports that foreign-backed militants have taken control of the Damascus international airport. State media say some Arab news channels are trying to raise the spirit of terrorists by spreading false news. Press TV has conducted an interview with Tahsin al-Halabi, political commentator, to further discuss the issue. Tajik to sue British Home Secretary-Comment-12-13-2012
Former Iranian diplomat Nosratollah Tajik, who recently won a UK High Court ruling blocking his extradition to the United States, says he will take legal action against British Home Secretary Theresa May for a six-year foot-dragging on his case, Press TV reports. Tajik, who walked free from a London court on Thursday, said that six years of delay in the extradition process have left negative impacts on his "health and family". He said he could not describe the "tough" conditions he had faced since his arrest in 2006 for allegedly trying to export US-made night-vision goggles to Iran. Tajik, the former Iranian ambassador to Jordan and an honorary fellow of Durham University, argued that the allegations against him were politically motivated and said, "In a sense, I had been taken hostage here for six years." At the time of his arrest, he insisted that he had simply negotiated the purchase of goggles for a student who needed them for research. On November 27, the High Court ruled that the former Iranian diplomat should be discharged and gave 14 days to the US government to appeal the ruling. "In the absence of any justification offered by the requesting state, the US, the court could not find there was reasonable cause for the delay [in the extradition process]. It ordered Mr. Tajik's discharge," ruled Lord Justice Moses of the High Court. Assassination of Press TV correspondent
Insurgents in the Syrian capital Damascus attacked the Press TV staff, killing the Iranian English-language news network's correspondent, Maya Naser, and injuring Press TV and Al-Alam Damascus Bureau Chief Hosein Mortada. Naser was shot and killed by a sniper, while Mortada, a Lebanese national, was shot in the back. The two were covering twin bomb blasts, which targeted the military command building in the Syrian capital and killed at least four Syrian security forces. Iran puts the responsibility for such terror acts on countries who seek to thwart regional and international efforts to solve the crisis in the Arab country through political means without foreign intervention. Born on July 30, 1979, in Syria, Maya Naser had studied political science, was fluent in Arabic and English and had worked in many countries including the US, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Bahrain. Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence. The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals. 'West seeks to prolong conflict in Syria'
A political analyst tells Press TV that Russia's position is one of the most pro-active positions of countries that are working on the Syrian conflict in terms of bringing all sides together and seeking a peaceful end to this conflict. The comments came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed Moscow's strong opposition to repetition of the Libyan scenario in the conflict-stricken Syria, stressing that the Kremlin will not allow such a thing happen again. He went on to note that Russia had not been involved in any talks on Assad's future, dismissing speculation that Moscow was preparing for the Syrian leader's departure. Press TV has conducted an interview with Isa Chaer, member of the Syrian Social Club, to further discuss the issue. US civil rights activists condemn spying on innocent people
A coalition of community activists says the Los Angeles Police Department is trampling civil rights in the name of enforcing the law. Activists say the department's so-called Special Order 1 allows police to engage in racial and religious profiling. Civil rights activists in the US state of California are demanding that authorities stop spying on communities based on race or religion. Activists say the practice is most common in the city of Los Angeles, where police there have a special order that allows them to secretly open files on people who are not committing crimes. 'US military industry wages war on Syria'
An analyst says US foreign policy directly serves Raytheon and other weapons manufacturers to make huge profits in US continuous wars and now for Syria. In the background of this, NATO agreed last week to send Patriot missile systems to the Turkish border with Syria and 400 US troops have been prearranged to land at the border potentially setting up pre-conditions for an illegal invasion of Syria that flies in the face of the United Nation's resolution against Western intervention in that country. The United States has refused all efforts from Russia and other parties to enter into a discussion to enable a political solution to the conflict. Press TV has interviewed Mr. Mark Mason, political commentator, San Francisco about this issue. NATO missile deployment in Turkey will provoke Russia, China: Lawrence Freeman
An analyst says NATO's plan of deploying Patriot missiles along Turkey's border with Syria is an "extremely dangerous and provocative" move which could well lead to a military confrontation with Russia and China. On November 21, Ankara formally asked NATO to deploy the surface-to-air Patriot missiles on its border with Syria. In response, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance would consider the Turkish request "without delay." However, many have slammed NATO' plan, saying it is meant to open the door for military intervention in Syria. Press TV has conducted an interview with Lawrence Freeman, with the Executive Intelligence Review weekly magazine from Baltimore, to further discuss the issue. Morsi needs to initiate genuine dialogue: Abayomi Azikiwe
A political analyst says that President Mohamed Morsi has really backed himself into a corner and he should create a situation where he could have genuine dialogue with the various opposition forces throughout the country. The comments came after angry protesters broke through security barricades near the presidential palace in Cairo to protest against Morsi's refusal to withdraw his late November declaration, which gives him sweeping powers and places his decisions beyond judiciary review. Press TV has conducted an interview with Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of Pan-African News Wire, to further discuss the issue. Media ramps up royal events to divert attention from real issues: Ian Williams
The mainstream media puts a lot of emphasis on the royal family, at times putting less emphasis on major news stories, a prominent editor tells Press TV. This comes as a memorial service had been held at Westminster Cathedral in London for the Indian-born nurse, who was found dead after falling victim to a hoax call about the Duchess of Cambridge. Press TV has conducted an interview with Ian Williams, an editor at the Foreign Policy in Focus, from New York, to further discuss the issue. 'HR groups expose Bahrain massacre'
An analyst says human rights forums are vital to exposing the true face of the Bahraini regime to the outside world as international NGOs and press are not allowed to go inside the kingdom. The comment comes as human rights activist have called for an immediate end to the ongoing heavy-handed crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain. During a meeting in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Thursday, the participants sought to raise awareness about the flagrant human rights violations in the Persian Gulf kingdom, amid the brutal crackdown by the ruling Al Khalifa regime. Press TV has conducted an interview with Bahraini human rights activist, Mohammad al-Tager from Beirut to further discuss the issue. 'Syrians resist colonial powers aggression'
An analyst says western governments trying to undermine the real opposition parties in Syria with their fake one has caused outrage in the country. In the background of this, Germany and the US have both recognized to only deal with one opposition party in Syria, an Obama and Clinton creation called the "National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces" with members that have relations with al-Qaeda. Amid this development, the violence in Syria continues with 8 people mostly women and children killed by a car bomb in the town of Jdaidet Artuz. This follows an early incident also a car bomb that killed 16 people and left dozens injured in a south west district of Damascus. Press TV has interviewed Mr. Eric Draitser, Founder of Stop Imperialism.com, New York about this issue.
