Analyst: Al-Shariah Jihad Militia behind Libya Consulate Attack and US Ambassador's Murder
The murder of four senior American diplomats in Benghazi, including their Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, may have been a pre-planned operation. Independent international analysts believe a Jihad militia may have taken advantage of the chaos outside the US consulate and committed the strike. Emile Hokayem of International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS): "It looks as though as this was a pre-planned attack, that was pretty opportunistic. Ansar al-Shariah, which is a shadowy Jihadi outfit that is very anti-American, anti-Western, just took advantage of a demonstration outside the consulate that was protesting the movie that slandered the prophet Muhammad, to mount its attack. But the firepower deployed, the number of fighters on the ground, the sophistication of the attack, really point to a pre-planned operation." The US attorney general has also now confirmed that the FBI has opened an investigation into the four deaths, raising further questions about the deadly attack outside the US consulate. Emile Hokayem of International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS): "Will it have lasting impact? I mean, looking at previous crises - the burning of the Quran and the impact on Afghanistan and Pakistan and other places, the Danish cartoons before etcetera - I would say that, if well managed, perhaps the worst can be avoided. And I think it will be avoided." An amateur video which depicted the Muslim Prophet Mohammad has led to wild protests and riots throughout the ...

Indian Air Force ( IAF ) - भारतीय वायु सेना
Indian Air Force Video Source : www.indianairforce.nic.in The Indian Air Force (IAF: भारतीय वायु सेना, Bharatiya Vāyu Senā) is the air arm of the Indian armed forces. Its primary responsibility is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a conflict. It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Raj and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War II. After India achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force served the Dominion of India, with the prefix being dropped when India became a republic in 1950. Since independence, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with the People's Republic of China. Other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay -- the invasion of Goa, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai. Apart from conflicts, the IAF has been an active participant in United Nations peacekeeping missions. The President of India Pranab Mukherjee serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the IAF. The Chief of Air Staff, an Air Chief Marshal (ACM), is a four-star commander and commands the Air Force. There is never more than one serving ACM at any given time in the IAF. One officer Arjan Singh, DFC has been conferred the rank of Marshal of the Air Force, a five-star rank and the officer serves as the ceremonial chief. In its publication the Military ...

Is preparing a new war? The largest military exercise in recent years Israeli-AMERICAN
Several US military officers have begun in recent days to land in Israel to coordinate the preparation of upcoming joint military maneuvers, signals the Israeli press. These officers are responsible for supervising the arrival in Israel, until 14 October, more than 1000 American soldiers for complex maneuvers will last three weeks, says Yediot Aharonot, according to which it is most important exercises of this type carried out jointly The US and Israel, send Moldpres. On this occasion, various networks will be tested Israel's air defense and missile missile batteries "Hetz" and interception system "Iron Dome". US magazine Time wrote on September 1 that Washington has significantly reduced maneuvers provided with Israel, perhaps because of disagreements on how to act in front of Iran's nuclear ambitions. Basically, instead of 5000 US troops, the Pentagon will send only 1200-1500 people. But all goes quiet. An Israeli army spokeswoman was contacted by AFP on these major exercises but declined to comment. These maneuvers will take place in the context of Israel, the US and much of Western countries accuse Iran wants to acquire nuclear weapons. Tehran says that he does not want only development with Russia, a civilian nuclear program, to cover the country's energy deficit. On the other hand, Israel would have several hundred nuclear warheads, according to an article published in June by a group of experts from the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London (IISS ...

Should Australia form an alliance with Japan?
The Australian Government is increasingly looking towards Japan as a strategic partner for the Asian Century. Recent moves by both the Australian and Japanese governments suggest a deepening of ties and a mutual desire to build and strengthen the relationship. In this public lecture Professor Hugh White explores the potential benefits and risks of an alliance between Japan and Australia. Japan is one of Australia's most important economic partners, a close ally of the US and might be prepared to sell Australia a highly advanced submarine fleet. Yet, for all the overlap of values, Professor White cautions that there is not necessarily an overlap of interests. In particular the rise of China poses difficult questions for the long term potential for the relationship, and for Australia's desire to avoid having to choose between the US and China. Hugh White is a Professor of Strategic Studies at ANU. He is a regular columnist for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. From 2001 to 2004 Professor White was the first Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI). Before that he had served as an intelligence analyst with the Office of National Assessments, as a journalist with The Sydney Morning Herald, as a senior adviser on the staffs of Defence Minister Kim Beazley and Prime Minister Bob Hawke, and as a senior official in the Department of Defence, where from 1995 to 2000 he was Deputy Secretary for Strategy and Intelligence. He is also a visiting Fellow at the ...

Is al-Qaeda Central Still Relevant?
Since the onset of the Arab uprisings in 2010 and Usama bin Laden's death the following year, a shrill debate has erupted over the relative importance of the original al-Qaeda group, commonly called "al-Qaeda Central." Some pundits say it is effectively dead, while others insist it remains as deadly as ever. To what extent is the al-Qaeda core still a driving force within Salafi-jihadist circles and therefore worthy of being the primary focus of US counterterrorism efforts? Does it continue to hold some measure of command and control over the larger movement and individual affiliates, or has it been overcome by the events of the past two years and surpassed by its regional franchises? To discuss the group's global standing, online presence, financial status, and other issues, The Washington Institute invited Bruce Hoffman, Mary Habeck, Aaron Zelin, and Matthew Levitt to address a Policy Forum luncheon in Washington, DC, on September 4, 2012. Bruce Hoffman is director of the Center for Peace and Security Studies and the Security Studies Program in Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. Previously, he directed RAND's Washington office and was a scholar-in-residence for counterterrorism at the CIA. Mary Habeck is an associate professor of strategic studies in the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. Author of Knowing the Enemy: Jihadist Ideology and the War on Terror (2006), she has also served on the National Security ...
