Roots of Blues -- Bukka White „Parchman Farm Blues"
„Parchman Farm Blues" (B. White) Recorded: Chicago, March 7, 1940 Bukka White (vcl) (g), Washboard Sam (w) Bukka White (November 12, 1909 -- February 26, 1977) was a delta blues guitarist and singer. "Bukka" was not a nickname, but a misspelling of White's Christian name by his second (1937) record label, (Vocalion). Born Booker T. Washington White near Houston, Mississippi, he gave his cousin BB King, a Stella guitar, King's first guitar. White himself is remembered as a player of National Steel guitars. He also played, but was less adept at, the piano. White started his career playing the fiddle at square dances. He claims to have met Charlie Patton early on, although some doubt has been cast upon this; regardless, Patton was a large influence on White. White typically played slide guitar, in an open tuning. He was one of the few, along with Skip James, to use a crossnote tuning in E minor, which he may have learned, as James did, from Henry Stuckey. He first recorded for the Victor Records label in 1930. His recordings for Victor, like those of many other bluesmen, fluctuated between country blues and gospel numbers. His gospel songs were done in the style of Blind Willie Johnson, with a female singer accentuating the last phrase of each line. Nine years later, while serving time, he recorded for folklorist John Lomax. The few songs he recorded around this time became his most well-known: "Shake 'Em On Down," and "Po' Boy." Bob Dylan covered his song "Fixin' to Die ...

Bukka White - Fixin To Die Blues
Feeling funny in my mind, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die Feeling funny in my mind, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die Well, I don't mind dying But I hate to leave my children crying Well, I look over yonder to that burying ground Look over yonder to that burying ground Sure seems lonesome, Lord When the sun goes down Feeling funny in my eyes, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die, fixing to die Feeling funny in my eyes, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die Well, I don't mind dying but I hate to leave my children crying Well there's a black smoke rising, Lord It's rising up above my head, up above my head Well there's a black smoke rising, Lord It's rising up above my head And tell Jesus make up my dying bed I'm walking kind of funny, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die, fixing to die Yes I'm walking kind of funny, Lord I believe I'm fixing to die, fixing to die, fixing to die Well, I don't mind dying But I hate to leave my children crying

Bukka White - Miss Leola
Miss Leola Morris was the longtime love and domestic partner to the legendary blues Balladeer and pioneer Booker T. Washington White. Mentor to his young cousin, BB King, Booker followed the model of the great Charlie Patton, but formed his own unique and incomparable style of blues storytelling. Here is the legend on video, singing about his sweetheart. A subject dear to many blues men, and also a source of their blues.

Parchman Farm Blues Bukka White
Parchman Farm Blues or When Can I Change My Clothes Bukka White Parchman Farm is Mississippi's oldest prison and is formally known as the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Parchman Farm was a plantation style farm/prison. Bukka White recorded a few songs before his time spent on the farm. He also recorded two songs while in prison for Alan Lomax and The Library of Congress. After serving his two years he went to record 12 more songs. He was another blues artist that was "rediscovered" in the sixties. This recording from his later work in the sixties.
