The Fascinating History of the River Sheaf, Sheffield UK
The city of Sheffield gets its name from a small, insignificant river called the Sheaf which also contributed hugely to its history as one of the first cities in the world to become a modern industrial powerhouse. This short video investigates how. Music by 植松伸夫(Calm Waters) and Whiteyes (Sans Elle) Acknowledgements for photos and illustrations

Tesco / Millhouses River sheaf floods Sheffield
This was taken at the 'fallen tree' area at Tesco Millhouses at approx 4:45 on the day of the flood (25/06/07). Its hard to describe what it normally looks like but the trees don't normally grow in water, its usually quiet and fairly still. There were some beautiful Mandarin ducks nesting next to the fallen tree, but sadly theyve not been seen since the floods. There was also a ferel cat round here, but not seen that since either. Im not sure people have realised how devastating the flood has been on local wildlife. Ive only seen 2 ducklings this year and that was on the 15th June (day of the first flood). Dont think we'll see many more this year.

This Is Sheffield
Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and partly Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 534500 and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities that make up England. As such, Sheffield Council commissioned a film to be produced in association with High Storrs School about what the area was like, and how it is seen now. The brief was unique as it required the input from everyone in society, including young people, professional sports persons, world record holders, city planners, artists and people of Sheffield. Principle photography lasted for 7 days, and relied on a small professional crew supplied by Voidcomp, working alongside a line producer from Pro Consultancy and a small team of students from High Storrs School. The brief was to explore the culture of the city from a young persons point of view, and illustrate the changes that Sheffield has undergone. The focus however was to be on the new, positive side of the steel city while giving all groups equal representation. voidcomp.co.uk voidcomp.co.uk/video/portfolio/sheffield

Sheffield
Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 534500. During the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for its steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1893, when it officially became the City of Sheffield. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area. Sheffield has over two million trees, more per person than any other city in Europe; 61% of the city is green space.

Sheaf Square - Sheffield
Sheaf Square, located on the subterranean confluence of the river Sheaf and the Porter Brook, has been redeveloped into a new public space outside Sheffield Railway Station and stands as the new gateway into Sheffield. Forming part of the 'Gold Route', extending from the station into the heart of the city, the redevelopment of Sheffield Station and Sheaf Square has provided Sheffield with a world class entrance into the city. As part of this redevelopment Ocmis, working with Sheffield Regeneration Projects Design Team (RPDT) and Jordan's Engineering, have developed the initial designs into a world class water feature. Essentially comprising of two separate elements the fountains consist of a cascade feature with seven cascading pools of water, adjacent to the 80m long stainless steel water covered 'Cutting Edge' sculpture. Concealed along the foot of the lowest cascade a custom designed and manufactured 'cold mist' system produces clouds of virtual steam at preset intervals during the evening. During the design phase of this project Ocmis constructed various full size mock-ups, developing and approving the concepts as work progressed ensuring the final result exceeded expectations. In a high profile feature such as this a large quantity of plant is required in order to both operate the various systems and maintain the water clarity and safety, concealing all this equipment whilst maintaining accessibility can be problematic. At Sheaf Square the entire fountain mechanics ...
