It is no secret that the northeast is thickly littered with abandoned hotels and resorts. Not too long ago it was tremendously popular to travel to the Catskill mountains or the Poconos with one's family, to briefly escape from the clamor of daily life, if even just for a single weekend. This is the mindset of a past era, as it seems modern day leaves little room for such simple pleasures. We are a society of digital escapism; no longer does one need to load up a car and drive off into the woods to get away from it all. Today, simply switching on of the television or computer can suffice to distance the mind from the hardships of reality. During its prime (in the 1960's and 1970's) Penn Hills was the honeymoon resort of choice in the Poconos, often requiring guests to make reservations months in advance. Always crowded, even during the winter months, Penn Hills was a place renowned for its on-site accommodations. Swimming, skiing, snowmobiling, archery, ice skating, and tennis were the key points of entertainment. In addition there was also an indoor game room, as well as a massive dining hall and night club, to keep guests busy after the sun had set. As time went on, especially after crossing over into the new millennium, Penn Hills began a slow and steady decline. Though it had fallen out of popularity, the resort had always maintained a clean (though out-dated) environment for travelers. Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. Story Line: Sophie, a beautiful drug abusing young actress, flies into Los Angeles from New York, for a job. While staying at the home of some family friends, who just happen to be out of town, Sophie finds her boredom and unhappiness to be the least of her problems.
Director Statement:
Moth started out for me as a way of expressing my love for drama in cinema. Being a huge fan of auteurs like Ingmar Bergman, John Cassavetes, Federico Fellini, and others, I was intrigued by the way they could capture genuine moments on camera. I knew I wanted to write a drama and knew I wanted it to be about a woman left alone to her own devices. It wasn't until a visit to the Lourve, that I found my direction, which came in the form of the painting The Young Martyr by Paul Delaroche.
My first thought was, "Its absolutely breathtaking". But it wasn't the execution of the painting, but the story itself. In this painting laid a young woman torn by heartbreak and in the top left corner, a man, standing at the top of a hill in silhouette. The young woman is tied up and left for dead. Now this "man on the hill" played for me as either the man who placed her in the river or the man that has come to save her. i.e. God or the Devil, good or evil.
So I knew at this moment that I wanted to create a film that told a story in this fashion. So the first thing I did was collect images and ideas and referred to films like, A Woman Under the Influence, Persona, etc, to get my inspiration for a sort of tone. And from that came MOTH (which started as Man On The Hill).
