Defense contractor wants taxpayers to foot cancer bill
Since the war on terror began, defense contractors have made off with billions of dollars in profits. Now one of those companies is looking towards taxpayers for payment as they are left with a serious lawsuit. KBR was in charge of rebuilding Iraq's oil infrastructure, and a substance that was used has proved to be deadly for US soldiers who guarded the work site. In November, a jury found the contractor guilty of poisoning soldiers and ordered the company to pay $85 million in damages. KBR, however, thinks taxpayers should pick up the tab. Mike Doyle, attorney for the Doyle Raizner LLP, joins us with more on the case. Military contracting last defense in bad economy
It's career day in Charlottesville, Virginia, and for one industry, business is booming. More than 1.6 million Americans work in defense contracting companies that supply the Department of Defense with everything from bombers to forks. And Americans aren't wrong to think a defense job is a good job—even during economic tough times, more than 50% of taxpayer dollars go to the Pentagon. In a bad economy, are defense contractors the last line of defense for the unemployed?

Defense CEOs battle "horrific" fiscal cliff cuts - Cliffwatch
Top executives from some of the biggest US defense contractors descend on Washington, pressuring Congress and the White House to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff". Failure to strike a deal by the end of the year triggers painful across-the-board cuts in defense spending that contractors warn could force mass layoffs. (December 3, 2012)

Paul Tonko speaks on House floor during defense approps on contractor spending 07 19 12
Taxpayers are footing the bill for defense contractors with no end in sight. Currently, defense contractors can early nearly $800000 per year in taxpayer profits alone, not to mention what they make from their company. Congressman Tonko offered an amendment today to cap this contractor pay and bring the deficit under control. By one account, this amendment would save $6 billion in a single year from the US Army alone. However, House Republicans blocked the amendment from receiving an up or down vote, languishing for another day.

Obama's Defense Contract Workers 'Stoned and Drunk'
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - We all pray for the safety of the brave men and women of the military. They put their lives on the line every day. But wait until you see some of the people that are building parts right here at home for their armored vehicles. There's a plant in Detroit called Tower Defense and Aerospace. The name itself gives you an idea what they do inside, but it's what we caught them doing outside during their lunch break that will shock you. Click on the video player to watch Rob Wolchek's report that includes footage of employees drinking and smoking what appears to be marijuana during their shifts. Tower Defense officials respectfully declined an offer to view footage of the employees before this story aired. They say they are aware of the issue and have an ongoing investigation of their own. Human Resources Director Anthony Ewing tells FOX 2 they take this very seriously. Update: After watching the story, Tower Defense and Aerospace responds to Fox 2 investigation. Tower officials say 17 employees have been "suspended pending discharge". Read the full statement from Tower's Executive Director, Investor & External Relations, Derek Fiebig below. The story reported earlier this week by Fox 2 in Detroit highlighted a very serious issue of unacceptable and reckless employee misconduct that was already under investigation by the company. Working as expeditiously as possible within the bounds of the legal union contract, seventeen employees have been suspended ...

Ethical? Most Ex Generals Work in Private Defense, Report Says
"A report released Monday by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the Brave New Foundation found that 70 percent of retired three-and-four star generals took jobs with defense contractors or consultants, a figure that has actually declined in recent years. The report found that 76 out of 108 top generals took such jobs from 2009 to 2011, and a few continued to advise the Department of Defense while on the payroll of contractors. The report cited Gen. James Cartwright, who was elected to a paid position on Raytheon's board of directors while serving on the Defense Policy Board. Adm. Gary Roughead also served on the board while joining the board of Northrop Grumman, earning $115000 per year. Eighty percent of generals retiring from 2004 to 2008 took such jobs, according to a 2010 Boston Globe investigation."* The majority of former generals become private defense contractors after retirement, and leave their jobs knowing this to be their plan. Is this ethical? Are the right motivations being considered by these generals? Is this act strengthening our military-industrial complex? Ana Kasparian and John Iadarola (Host, TYT University) break it down. *Read more from Luke Johnson/ Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Support The Young Turks by Shopping bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on ...

Defense Industry Wants Higher Taxes To Avoid Cuts
"The very real possibility that defense programs will suffer deep, across the board spending cuts early next year has major defense contractors and their allies making an unusual plea to members of Congress: Put everything on the table to avoid the so-called sequester — including higher taxes. That might not sound like an extraordinary ask. But it's typical for incumbent interests to leave all questions of ways and means to Congress. And given the defense industry's enormous power and historic alignment with the GOP, it could have enough force to finally break the GOP of its anti-tax absolutism...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Brian Buetler at Talking Points Memo: tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: twitter.com Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com
