བོད་ - 西藏 - Tibet: This vast high plateau is home to wild and domesticated yaks. They provide a livelihood for farmers and nomadic herders across the 'Tibet Autonomous Region' and the Chinese provinces Qinghai and Sichuan. The Tibetan Plateau, four times the size of France (1000km by 2500km ), is the most extensive plateau in the world. With a mean altitude of around 4500 metres, it is also the highest in the world. The yak is at home on this bleak and windswept plateau and in the Himalayas in the south-west.
We heard about a festival in Mongolia where nomadic cowboys race giant long-horned Yaks across the open countryside so we decided to go check it out.

VICE travels to the vast epic-ness of Khovsgol Province in northern Mongolia to check in on the second annual Yak Festival. Mongolians revere the mighty yak for powering Genghis Khan's bloody rampage through Asia and Europe. And for their pretty hair. The festival showcased nature's fanciest cows in an array of yak-related activities including yak wrangling, yak rodeo, yak cheese-tasting, as well as the main event, a balls to the wall yak race across the steppe. The Kentucky Derby this is not.

Inspired by the advice of his guru Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, a monk leads a herd of Himalayan yaks across a rugged terrain of mountain passes, narrow valleys, freezing rivers and treacherous cliffs to a remote haven in the high grasslands of northeastern Nepal. Every step taken on this brave journey is to save these wonderful animals and grant them liberation.

Der zahme Hausyak, oder Tibetische Grunzochse, ist das wichtigste Nutztier für die Menschen der tibetischen Hochebene. Yaks ermöglichen Landwirtschaft und Viehzucht in Höhenlagen wo man diese eigentlich nicht mehr erwarten würde. Yakmilch, Yakfleisch, Yakleder, Yakhaar, Yakdung - es gibt kaum etwas vom Yak das nicht genutzt wird. Farblich können Yaks ähnlich variabel sein wie die üblichen Hausrinder, wobei Wildyaks meistens schwarz oder dunkelbraun sind. Es gibt mehr als zehn verschiedene Rassen vom Hausyak. Am bekanntesten ist sicherlich der Weiße Tianzhu-Yak, welcher speziell wegen seinem hellen Langhaar gehalten wird, weil dieses sich zum Färben in der Weiterverarbeitung besser eignet als pigmentiertes Haar.
Gefährdet sind die alten Rassen des Hausyaks heute besonders durch die Hybridisierung mit normalen Hausrindern, denn die Kreuzung ergibt sehr robuste und leistungsstarke Hybriden und wird deswegen oft gemacht.

Yak
The yak (Bos grunniens and Bos mutus) is a long-haired bovid found throughout the Himalaya region of southern Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia. Most yaks are domesticated Bos grunniens. There is also a small, vulnerable population of wild yaks, Bos mutus.
Etymology
The English word "yak" derives from the Tibetan gyag (Tibetan: གཡག་, Wylie: g.yag ) – in Tibetan this refers only to the male of the species, the female being called a dri or nak. In English, as in most other languages which have borrowed the word, "yak" is usually used for both sexes.
Taxonomy
Yaks belong to the genus Bos, and are therefore related to cattle (Bos primigenius taurus, Bos primigenius indicus). Mitochondrial DNA analyses to determine the evolutionary history of yaks have been somewhat ambiguous.
The yak may have diverged from cattle at any point between one and five million years ago, and there is some suggestion that it may be more closely related to bison than to the other members of its designated genus. Apparent close fossil relatives of the yak, such as Bos baikalensis, have been found in eastern Russia, suggesting a possible route by which yak-like ancestors of the modern American bison could have entered the Americas.

Juste Debout
Juste Debout ("just standing") is an international and annual dance competition founded in 2001 by Bruce Soné in France which focuses on street dance styles. The four main categories are hip hop new style, house, locking and popping.
History
Juste Debout was initially held in 2002 in Paris, France, and has since then returned each year around February. The 2006 edition was the first to feature a number of linked events (so called pre-selections) in countries outside France with the finals being held in Paris. This allowed Juste Debout to reach a larger and more international audience.
Juste Debout 2007 was held on February 25 in Paris and featured international pre-selections starting as early as January in countries such as Germany, Italy, Japan, Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Jsmooth & Future from the dance crew MGF (Machine Gone Funk) in the USA won the Juste Debout Popping contest 2007. Manu & loïc from France won the Locking. Stéphanie & Dedson from Denmark and France won Hip-hop. Lastly, Hiro & Meech from Japan and France won the House dance contest.

Yaks ermöglichen Landwirtschaft und Viehzucht in Höhenlagen wo man diese eigentlich nicht mehr erwarten würde. Yakmilch, Yakfleisch, Yakleder, Yakhaar, Yakdung - es gibt kaum etwas vom Yak das nicht genutzt wird. Combing Yaks
In Central Mongolia, a cooperative of yak herders take steps to ensure that yaks continue to roam the highlands and help sustain their livelihood and tradition. This is a story of a mission to encourage yak herders to continue herding their animals and find a viable market for their products without having to increase their dependence on goats for cashmere. And this is also about the year's busiest season, spring. And did you know Yak fibre makes for a darn good jumper? Filmed in May 2012. This project was undertaken as a volunteer for non-profit Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders or Agronomes et Veterinaires Sans Frontiers (AVSF).

And this is also about the year's busiest season, spring. And did you know Yak fibre makes for a darn good jumper?
