700HP in the Baltic Lands: Latvia Part 1 of 2 - LIVE AND LET DRIVE
Since Alex only wants to drive in places American tourists NEVER go, we sent him to Riga, Latvia to meet up with our old friend Oto Godfrey. In Part 1 of our journey to the Baltic Lands, Alex has a look inside and outside the capitol city, where we find houses made of wood, one of the fastest cars in the country, and a KGB Headquarters. Next week on Part 2 of Latvia, we take the car to the track to drift with an F3 driver, visit a DMV from the far future, and fire AK-103 assault rifles at paper assailants.

Riga In Your Pocket - Independence Day Latvia
www.inyourpocket.com Riga In Your Pocket visits Latvia's Independence Day. On November 18, 1918, a group of Latvian intelligentsia declared their nation's independence from the disintegrating Russian Empire. Dominated by foreign powers since the arrival of Teutonic knights at the end of the 12th century, Latvians finally had their own state. Unfortunately, rogue German military units and the new Bolshevik government in Russia didn't take the declaration seriously and fighting continued until, with the help of Polish and Estonian armies, all of Latvia's enemies were expelled from the country in 1920. Independence Day is celebrated with various events and concerts in Riga, a military parade on 11.novembra krastmala, events at the Freedom Monument and a speech by the Latvian president. This year Independence Day takes place on a Friday creating a three-day weekend so you can expect plenty of celebrating in the capital starting as early as Thursday evening. My Latvia. (part 1 of 2)
Several decades ago, Latvian filmmaker Albert Jekste produced a grim, gripping documentary entitled "My Latvia" depicting the Soviet conquest and occupation of the Baltic States. A documentary features of the illegal Soviet military occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. This unusual film, which illuminates communist methods of internal subversion and conquest, includes rare scenes of Stalin and other Soviet leaders attending closed Kremlin meetings, and examines the criminal background of the Latvian nationals who "invited" the Soviets into that country and subsequently assumed high communist government posts. In August 1939, Hitler and Stalin signed a treaty called the "Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact" to make Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union allies and divide Europe between them. In September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the west and Stalin invaded Poland from the east, starting World War II. In late September 1939, Stalin threatening to invade and occupy Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania if they did not permit him to maintain military bases there. He promise to honor their sovereignty. After Poland's fate, the three Baltic countries saw no alternative but to yield. In June 1940, the Soviets broke their promises, took over the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian governments, and killed or deported virtually all political and business leaders. Stalin subsequently declared that the Baltic countries had "volunteered" to become part of the Soviet Union.

Nazi Heroes? Waffen SS hailed in Latvia
Over a thousand people in Latvia have gathered to pay heroes' honours to SS veterans in a controversial annual march. Many condemned the rally as glorifying Nazism, worried about it inspiring nationalistic youths. Despite that, it's got support at the highest political levels, as Jacob Greaves reports. EEDC 2nd stage Latvia, Riga 16.06.2012
Latvians turn out to be the most successful in exciting EEDC Rigas stage On June 16 Riga stage of the most extensive Eastern-Europe region drift championship EEDC already for the third time took place in Bikernieki complex sports-base, where spectators, regardless of extensive crashes and impenetrable puffs of fume, had the opportunity to follow up the winning procession performed by Latvian drivers - only Dimitry Ilyuk, racer from Ukraine, could press in between the winner Janis Eglite and the winner of third place Gvido Elksnis. Before the competition, Polish racer Pavel Trela was considered as the main pretender to the win in Riga, but Bikernieki Pro Drift race track turned out deceitful for him. Trela experienced two crashes, and the second one was so hard that it was not possible to return his sports car back on track. Ivo Cirulis also had a crash in the same place of the track, notwithstanding the fact that this track is well known for him. Those crashes can be interpreted by the fact that the speed in drift races has essentially increased this year, what makes control of sports cars in a track even harder. Due to this reason, many foreign racers could not show appropriate results -- very experienced drift experts slipped out of the track in qualification and tandem battle runs. Thus three Latvian races reached semifinal -- Janis Eglite, Gvido Elksnis and Vents Pecaks, as well as Ukrainian racer Dimitry Ilyuk. Final race was held by Janis Eglite and Dimitry Ilyuk ...

Russian language dispute in Latvia
The citizens of Latvia voted not to recognize the Russian language the second state language of the country. A little less than 80% of the voters said no to the Russian language as a result of the referendum. For the majority of experts, such an outcome of the vote did not come as a surprise. In the meantime, many take the results of the vote in Latvia as an achievement of those struggling for the rights of the Russian language in the country. Alexander Brod, the Director of the Moscow Bureau for Human Rights: "There were serious problems during the preparations to the referendum. The ruling elite have done their best to make the general public form a negative attitude to this referendum. They were baiting the organizers of the vote." The results of the referendum do not reflect people's real attitude to the Russian language. Nearly a third of the Latvian population did not take part in the vote. Those are the people who hold the status of non-citizens. All of them would have voted for the language, but not against it. "I think that this referendum should be a lesson for the Latvian authorities. The standoff between the Latvians and the Russian cannot last forever. To reach compromise, one could grant the Russian language the status of the national minority language. There are quite many areas in the country which are populated by the Russian-speaking people, so the Russian language could successfully have a regional status in Latvia." It is worthy of note that nearly 40 ...

DDB Latvia on the Ventspills Tourism Campaign
Even by Latvian standards, Ventspils is a small town. Almost everyone in Latvia has a positive opinion about the quality of life in Ventspils, but only 16 considered Ventspils to be a tourism destination. To change this, we first defined that Ventspils is really a state within a state. Thus the campaign idea was born to print its own money and open embassies throughout the world. The announcement of Ventspils currency caused a tsunami in the media, whose waves extended as far afield as the neighbouring countries of Estonia, Lithuania and Russia.Even the Head of the Bank Latvia, Prime Minister and President were forced to take part in debates about the legality of Ventspils currency, while the general public shared its versions of the currencys design via social networks. In the Latvian media, the news about vents became the most debated issue of the week.A week after the launch event of Venti, 74 of Latvians were aware of the campaign. As a result, almost 10 million vents ended up in circulation, received by 28 000 people. As a currency to be used to make payments in Ventspils, vents were used by people in 16 countries.During Ventspils Online Embassys the first seven working weeks, it was visited by almost 50000 guests of the state, which is 7000 more than the population of Ventspils. And theyll be back.
