Milan, Italy and Lake Como
After you've taken in the city's renaissance art treasures, people-watch in Milan's high-fashion shopping zone to see Italy's 21st century prosperity on parade. An hour away by train is Lake Como, Rick's favorite of Italy's northern lakes, with the best mix of accessibility, scenery, offbeat-ness — and a heady whiff of aristocratic romance. Lake Como, Italy: Bellagio and Varenna
Lake Como — lined with palm trees and elegant pastel-colored villas, crowned by snowcapped mountains, and criss-crossed by a fleet of ferries and hydrofoils — is a great place to take a break from the intensity of Italy that one finds further south. Just an hour northeast of bustling Milan, Lake Como's ambiance seems to whisper luna di mele (honeymoon). Half the travelers you'll meet here have tossed their itineraries into the lake and are actually relaxing. Bellagio, the self-proclaimed "Pearl of the Lake" is a classy combination of Old World elegance and new world luxury. Varenna — on the less-developed side of the lake — has a romantic waterside promenade, a tiny harbor, and inviting narrow lanes. For more information on the Rick Steves' Europe TV series — including episode descriptions, scripts, participating stations, travel information on destinations and more — visit www.ricksteves.com.

Lake Como
Lake Como (Lago di Como in Italian, also known as Lario; Lach de Comm in Insubric; Latin: Larius Lacus) is a lake of glacial origin in Lombardy, Italy. It has an area of 146 km², making it the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. At over 400 m (1320 ft) deep it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the bottom of the lake is more than 200 metres (656 ft) below sea-level. Lake Como has always been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people ever since the Roman times, and a very popular tourist attraction, which boasts many artistic and cultural gems. It is famous for its numerous villas and palaces (such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni and Villa Carlotta). Currently, many celebrities have or had homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Matthew Bellamy, Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, and Sylvester Stallone. Lake Como is widely regarded as being one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. ( source Wikipedia )

Lake Como, Italy
This is the beginning of our two week trip all over Italy. For the first few days, we stayed in Bellagio, which is at the tip of a peninsula in the middle of Lake Como, in Northern Italy. We took ferries and spent time in all the surrounding cities as well. This video takes you to all of them: Bellagio, Cadenabbia (with the Villa Carlotta), Menaggio, and Varenna (with the Castello di Vezio and its amazing views of Lake Como and Bellagio). This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, possibly only eclipsed by Capri, Italy (which will be the main part of my next video, so subscribe if you haven't already). Thanks for watching!! Song is a traditional Italian tune called Tarantella.

C. Galos : Le Lac de Côme (Lake Como), 6th Nocturne
The composer of this popular 19th c salon piece is a mystery. I had thought he/she was Italian, but having seen discussions on the subject on a piano forum, I think that the author - often spelt as 'Galas' - was French, and quite possibly female, and had died (or given up writing) by 1924. Galos's pieces are composed of stock salon clichés. However,, they succeed where so much similar music has been forgotten because they lie well on the piano, have pleasant melodies, and, above all, they are well-proportioned and concise.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk

Varenna - Villa Monastero - Lake Como
Villa Monastero is located in Varenna on Lake Como and its name derives from the original function of the building, from the thirteenth century until 1567 was used as a place of retreat for the Cistercensian nuns of St. Maria Maddalena. In 1569 the monastery was bought by the noble Paul Mornico who transformed it into a private residence, from 1609 to 1645 Leila Mornico, Paul's son, restored his father's house until it becomes a sumptuous villa called Lailana. In 1862 the villa passed to Peter Genazzini, in 1876 to Carolina Maumary Massimo D'Azeglio's sister-in-law, in 1897 to German industrialist Erich Walter Jacob Kees, who restored it again embellished and widened until it reached its current appearance. The last owner of the villa was Marco de Marchi in 1836 he enriched it again bringing his own works, and when he died it began a property of the state through his wife who created an Hydrobiology Institute. In 1977 the institute was incorporated into the National Research Council, which still today owns the villa and the park that surrounds it. The interior of villa Monastero consists of boardrooms that preserve the beautiful furniture, artwork and collections of great value and for this Lombardy Region has recognized the villa as a house museum (open to visitors since 2005). You can't miss the beautiful botanical garden that grows between the road and the lake and represents an extraordinary example of artificial system of land and furnishing. In particular, look for ...
