Jim Chanos: Psychology of short selling; China makes Europe, US debt look like child's play
Jim Chanos is a legendary short seller and Founder of Kynikos Associates, the hedge fund management company he started in 1985. Sitting down with Opalesque.TV, he talks about his background and first great short idea in Baldwin United, which led him to believe he could successfully start Kynikos utilizing a short selling mandate. Chanos gives insights from his 27 years in the business into the asymmetries between the long and short side of investing and talks about the drastic difference in psychology between successful short sellers and long only investors. While the actual skill-set (to analyze companies etc.) is identical, good short sellers must be capable to withstand the "giant positive reinforcement machine" that Wall Street has become. This is something most investors cannot do and why most of them, even hedge fund managers, fail on the short side. In this Opalesque.TV BACKSTAGE video, Chanos also tells the story of how he developed his bearish view on China, beginning with the analysis of Chinese mining stocks in 2009 where his deeper analysis led him to the view that China is in a dire state due to bad credit and credit extension, which "makes Greece and Spain and the US look like child's play". He also shares valuable insights about the issues around Chinese listed companies, and what people should be aware of when investing in Hong Kong's H-share market. In addition, Chanos speaks about why short selling bans are in the end devastating to financial markets ...

Short-selling explained
Following days of volatile activity, European markets rose today after France, Italy, Spain and Belgium imposed a temporary ban on the short-selling of financial shares. Investors who participate in short-selling borrow shares from other investors and sell them at current market prices. When the value of those shares drop, they buy them back at the new, lower price and return the shares to their original owners. Their profit is the difference between the price they sold the shares and the price they bought them back, minus lender fees. In essence, the goal of short-selling is to profit from the falling price of stock. Market analyst Aly-Khan Satchu explains to Al Jazeera's Tony Harris why short-selling can cause market problems.

Phantom Shares - "naked" short selling
The report is on "naked" short selling. It explains the phenomenon and is quite informative. Since my last post called into question the "spine" of many in the hedge fund industry, I figured I mine as well back up those accusations of market manipulation and distortion. $6 Billion in trades fail each day or in other words 1% of all trades each day will fail (seller fails to deliver shares)

Ban All Short Selling? An Investor Calls that Plain Stupid
My Daily Blog is at: investorandtrader.blogspot.com Ok. This came out: "The US Securities and Exchange Commission intends to temporarily ban short-selling, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday night. It's unclear if the commission has approved the move, the Journal reported. SEC Chairman Christopher Cox, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson were briefing congressional leaders Thursday night. The US move would follow a similar action by UK regulators on Thursday" Absolutely. Positively ... insane.NOTE: This is not an investment or trading recommendation. The losses in trading can be very real, and depending on the investment vehicle, can exceed your initial investment. I am not a licensed trading or investment adviser, or financial planner. But I do have 12 years of experience in trading and investing in these markets. The Challenge accounts are run for the education of other traders who should make their own decisions based off their own research and risk tolerance. Included Music is by Paul Young. This system made 50% last week (even with it being a shorter 4 day trading week) shorting promoted pump and dump penny stocks! davianletter.com The DL's Gravity Small/micro cap securities can provide returns like very few other markets can. Tilting the risk reward scale in favor of our clients is exactly what the Gravity product aims to do. The Davian Letter has become known for creating great products that are built on a strong foundation of integrity and ethics to further enhance client value. These core values are especially imperative when participating in this coverage universe, rife with questionable characters and tactics on all sides. Penny stock prices are often time manipulated through "pump and dump" campaigns. This allows insiders to make tremendous amounts of money in short periods of time, but leave outsiders holding the bag when gravity catches up to the stock and it crashes back down to earth. We help our clients identify these pump and dump penny stocks, avoiding a disaster holding long and/or make loads money from short selling these pump and dump penny stocks! davianletter.com

THE LENSES:
The DP owned one 50mm prime, about as stock as they come and I borrowed my friends 28mm prime for a few shots here and there. I did however, rent a 70-200mm canon zoom lens for most of the shoot and that cost me another $200.00. Later I found out that a friend of mine had the same lens sitting on a shelf collecting dust...Bu Hao
THE DOLLY/FOLLOW FOCUS:
we used the microdolly for almost all of the moving shots (we used a tiny skateboard for the dolly along the shoes).
http://www.microdolly.com/micro_2.html
It's a very simple device to use, the kit is insanely cheap ($45.00/day) and comes with a 13 foot track which is like a tent pole design, meaning it's all one piece but you could collapse the end of it to fit into smaller spaces. There is a 45 degree curved track option as well, but we never bothered to rent it.
We probably should have had a little more weight on the tripod itself, given that it was only the 5D because the tripod would slip off the track from time to time. You'll notice we had a shitty tripod so we tapped it to the T-bar rather than it fitting in snugly like it would had we had a real profession tripod, ah well. Oh and those foam pads they provide you with to go under the track? We ditched using those after the first day, they just got in the way.
This may not be the best option in the world for flexibility, it's more of an indoor dolly for sure but I'd totally use it again if I was on a tight budget. It's a great way to add production value, considering the price.
We did use a redrock adapter but for some reason we couldn't figure out how to get the focus ring onto the left side of the camera, so the DOP could pan/tilt with his right hand. Not only that but his lens package weren't very high end so the clamp kept slipping off the focus adjustment on the lens (we ended up using double sided tape to make it bite properly). Focus was such a tricky and often elusive thing, there were several double digit takes done to achieve proper focus through out the whole length of the shots.
THE LIGHTING:
1x 1K Arri tungsten
1x 650W Arri tungsten
1x 300W Arri tungsten
-for Saffron's day scenes we used a medium flexfill
-and for her night exterior footage I used a tiny led (daylight balanced) camera light, the kind that slides into the accessory shoe of consumer cameras. Really cheap, it cost me $69 I think. The light sensitivity of the 5D really is insane. Since it was just a crew of two, the DP and I, it usually fell on to me to provide a little backlight on those night scenes and it was a little bizzare to be 15 feet back and it still be too bright.
THE SOUND:
I used my old Canon XL1s with a Lav attachment to re-record all of the spoken lines in the film. Basically after the cut was finalized I cued the scene up on my laptop, had the actors watch the takes a few times and then had them say the lines until I thought they matched up well enough. I bought the lav about 6 years ago, it cost about $250.00 or so and it wasn't top of the line or anything.
The reason were weren't plugging the lav into the 5D is because you still couldn't control the levels with the camera, so if something peaked, I'd have no real idea until afterwards anyways. You really do need an external device for good audio with this camera, sticking a boom mic or shotgun attachment won't really get you much better in the way of quality especially with that horrid auto gain feature.
THE WORKFLOW:
Converted the footage in FCP to Apple ProRes (HQ) files.
Edited accordingly with shitty guide track from the 5D, then had the actors re-record their lines with my lav attached to my old XL1s running in 30P "FRAME MODE". Cleaned up the timeline then sent it to Color for grading.
BUDGET:
Other than the one lens and the Microdolly and Redrock adapter, I just spent money the regular stuff like gas and meals. The locations were free, the actors brought their own wardrobe, except for the doctor (the DP has been a doctor for halloween for the past ten years and already had the lab coat and stethoscope!), there was no hair or make up dept. All of Saffron's scenes were shot over one day/night and by luck she had some hair extensions of her own that she was able to put in over lunch to help sell the idea that a lot more time had passed over course the of their relationship - you'll notice she never has short hair during any of her night scenes.
Total cost of this film $800.00 (approx.)

[ Homeland ] - with my DIY motion-dolly
This is my little dream to make a timelapse short clip which is about my city -- Hong Kong .
The whole project lasted around half a year .
At the first step , I found that motion-dolly sells online are quite expensive .
So I started to do researches / build up parts for the 2-axials motion dolly /
assemble them onto the slider / adjust a better accuracy .
It's some kinda troublesome jobs .
But no wonder , the longest part of the project must be taking out those gears ,
sight seeing , setting up the GH2 and waiting for the shots at different spots .
It's a bit hard . But I'd really enjoyed .
Hope you can share me 5mins to share my little dream .
Songs : Radical Face - Welcome Home
Camera : GH2
Lens : Panasonic 14140mm + 25mmF1.4
Pics : Around 30,000 pictures .

Percebeiros (Sea Bites) 1920x1080
http://www.enpiedeguerra.tv/percebeiros/

Beriain is one of the few reporters in the world that has managed to infiltrate the FARC guerrilla camps in Colombia. His work there made him a finalist for the Bayeux-Calvados, the most pres- tigious international award for war correspon- dents. He has interviewed the Taliban command- ers who killed Spanish soldiers, met with the twelve-year-old hitmen that Colombian druglords exploit as child soldiers, and even accompanied the American Army on some of their most danger- ous military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. His latest TV documentary took him to Eastern Congo, where he covered the conflict between the Congolese Army and the rebels who fight, kill and rape in order to gain the control of the Coltan and Cassiterite mines.
During his time at Sea Bites, Beriain was in charge of producing the story and coordinating all the members in the team. He was the one who convinced everyone to get on board and as a true leader, he turned a group of people who did not know each other into a real team.
