Chateaux of the Loire
The Loire valley includes historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours. The Loire Valley (French: Vallée de la Loire), spanning 280 kilometres (170 miles), is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France. It comprises an area of approximately 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi). It is referred to as the Cradle of the French Language, and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards, artichoke, asparagus and cherry fields which line the banks of the river. Notable for its historic towns, architecture and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period. In 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire River valley to its list of World Heritage Sites. The architectural heritage in the valley's historic towns is notable, especially its castles, such as the Châteaux d'Amboise, Château de Chambord,château d'Ussé, Château de Villandry and Chenonceau. The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendor of those built half a millennium later. When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers. In addition to its many châteaux, the cultural monuments ...

Chateaux of the Loire Valley - France
The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendor of those built half a millennium later. When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers. Château de Valençay. By the middle of the 16th century, King Francois I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire. The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost their head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military ...

Day 19: Loire Valley Castles - 30 Days In Paris France
Day 19: Took a Cityrama bus tour. www.ParisCityrama.com . It is part of the same operation as Paris Vision who I took the Normandy tour with on day 16. It is a 12 hour tour so it gets an early start at 7:15am. Luckily the Metro was running smoothly at that hour so we made it to the pickup point without delay. We both slept for most of the 2.5 hour bus ride to the Loire Valley region. It was a two story bus and not as comfortable the single level bus from the Normandy tour. We had three tour guides onboard, English, Spanish, and Japanese. So during the ride each time an announcement was made it was repeated three times. We visited three castles during the tour. At each one our English speaking guide gave us headphone radios that were tuned to her microphone. She escorted us through the castles giving detailed descriptions and historical information along the way. After her presentation we were given some time on our own. At the second stop, the Chateau de Chenonceau, we were given time on our own for lunch and on the property we found a wonderful restaurant L'Orangerie, open March -- Mid November. This is a fancy "gastronomic restaurant" but the food was very good and reasonably priced. A full course meal would have made us late for the bus so we only had an entrée and dessert. Because a full meal takes so long the tour guides don't mention it when giving lunch options. At the last stop, Chateau Cheverny, after our guided tour, we ran into some of the property staff who ...

Lost In Francelation - Wine tasting in the Loire valley
How do you say 'Cheers' in French? This is just one of my several questions as I drink my way (!) through the Loire, enjoying some of France's finest vintages... Another urgent question - how to possibly describe the taste of these very special wines?? I'll have to depend on my friends at the chateau, during our little degustation (wine tasting). And of course, my imagination comes in handy too, with these original ways to describe wine: White flowers Pear Force Power 'Long in the mouth' (?) Citrusy Delicious a little Flinty ...and very Refreshing! 'Tchin'! Enjoy and take a look at the complete blog with even better videos at us.franceguide.com Get Lost in Francelation!
